@@Scrapla1 you may be right about that. The final designs usually follow a function over form, Chip's designs are form over function. In real life that could be the difference in between hitting a deer and making it home with the same car, or be stuck in the street. The Delorean was designed by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. He's responsible for some remarkable design examples (mk1 Golf/Scirocco, BMW M1, Lotus Esprit, De Tomaso Mangusta, Maserati Ghibli, etc). He has a very specific design philosophy. I normally stick up for Chip, but this rendition takes away from Giorgetto's design aesthetic. Sometime it's better just to leave the originals alone.

Agree Giugiaro was great he did previously Lotus Esprit, BMW M1, DeTomaso Mangusta, Porsche Tapiro.. all with similar ques in style so maybe he wanted to bring the European success into the US market the main issue was that as Chip mentioned DeLorean upset many GM leading boarder guys, so he left by it's own creating his own brand that is why this car suffered from what we know as cheap build quality by cutting all expensive materials & parts costs which translated and resulted in what DeLorean car it is ..

After having wrenched on at least a few thousand of these back in the day I can honestly say there was much room for improvement from new. By the time the DMC12 left Dunmurray there were 2 pages of mechanical retrofits alone! As for the body, the front/rear fascias never fit correctly as their mounting systems were ill conceived costing John Z a small fortune in man hours to correct. I made a special pry bar in the shape of a P trap to lift the center of the front fascia up by bending the metal panel under it. There were also many a cracked front fender so to that end fabricating a new DMC13 would be better in some alloy with a stainless wrap. If I remember correctly there were horrendous reception problems with the stereos in the DMC12 on account of static caused by bare metal at speed. Also, you Foose Folk need to add a baby bump to that hood so the rear flippin tire can actually be stowed. And don't let any of that Lotus epoxy-coated-buffoonery influence the suspension design for godsakes.

My Navy division officer bought a new DeLorean back in the day. He waited 9 months for delivery, he drove it for a week and it spent the next year in and out of the dealer shop for "required testing, maintenance and upgrades", always scheduled during our at sea periods... of course. He sold it 10 years later for twice what he paid for it... (not considering all the fixes, add-ons, upgrading which all had "Co-Pay's") And when I drove it once, it was a pig... a heavy pig. I had a 65 Mustang with a very tired six and 3 speed, and by that scale it was not a pig. Looked like a pig but drove like an old cat, smooth and slow. The DeLorean felt claustrophobic, like being in a safe... the kind you put all your loot in. My DO's wife refused to ride in it... she said it reminded her of a casket... the kind they bury you in. How about drawing a upsized Cadillac Escalade version of the Chevy HHR style? Now that would be ART, Foose kind of ART. Thanks Chip!

Interesting re-envisioning of the DMC. I totally understand Chips POV in making some of the lines flow better, and I really think that's a big challenge for the DeLorean. As a result I think the front end change looks kind of K-car-ish. The rear looks like a challenger...but I like that better than the front. What the DMC should have had for the front was pop-up headlights to really compliment the wedge design. Though the pop-up headlights would have made the DMC too much more like it's Lotus Esprit cousin than it already was. Thanks Chip! Love your work and inspiration.

My father in law was a product manager for DMC , he was there for the foundations of the factory being laid into the ground until it closed. In its time it was a high tech factory with robot type moving platforms believe it or not ,The biggest mistake was how quickly the car went from designed to manufacture, I think it was 2 years which is crazy , most probably would be around 5 to 10 years 🤔.. the factory was also built in the time of the “troubles”situation in Ireland and it got fire bombed destroying plans and other important information, but amazingly both sides of these factions worked under the same roof without issue..it has a very interesting history, Back to the future film appearance was just part of it.

Design is subjective. I own and love every angle of my 83, that said, I always appreciate the fun and curiosity of reimagining. Very cool! Only thing I'd personally change would be engine, suspension, and modernize the interior slightly. The original exterior design is arguably one of the only things most car folks would agree Delorean got 110% right. Naturally, those who disagee hate everything about the car since "it dernt ger fast." I agree somewhat about the car's fame. If it weren't for BTTF, it wouldn't be a movie star, but it would be every bit as iconic as other flashy 80's symbols of excess like the Testarossa and Countach.

Changing anything on this car BUT the engine is a sin. "Dated when it came out." ?? Yeah, no. Do some research Chip. He left GM at his peak because he wasn't allowed to make the cars GM should've been making. He started his own company to make those cars.

I like the fact that Chip Foose can make just about anything happen in his drawings. I think I would like to see this actually get pulled off in real life and compare the original to the redesign. And you could add more power under the hood or trunk end of he car. They have some nice good small V8's that Cadillac has had as front driver engines and can bet set up for rear drive action I would like to challenge Chip to do this car and make it happen.

Chip your the best! The original car should stay in the past like everyone that thinks it looks great for whatever reason. Maybe they like it because it takes them back to a simpler time, but I think your subtle changes are cool and clean. I’m sure you’d have a big block with tons of power in it.

Is that how they invented the Gen 4 Twisted Sister NASCAR stock cars? Someone drew a picture like this to show the entire livery and someone else went, hey, that's brilliant, let's build this.

Desculpe Chip, mas não há o que melhorar um ícone que continua perfeito. Saudações do Brasil... esperamos sua visita ao Brasil! Sorry Chip, but there is no need to improve an icon that is still perfect. Greetings from Brazil ... we look forward to your visit to Brazil!

What's upsetting is how our government set him up in the drug sting. He was trying to get money to save his company. Our government put a stop to it. He was a smart man. He did a lot for PONTIAC. Great video

The icon of the 80's suddenly looks like a souped up GM/Mopar collaboration from the 70's. Front from Buick Regal, and a rear from Dodge Challenger. Not at all the futuristic UFO it originated. Only thing DMC-12 needs updating is the mechanics, and maybe brighter lights, like a double LED bar at the front and "higher resolution" in the back, meaning smaller cubes, that could act directly with the brake pressure, and travelling indicators. Also the side window opening needs to be bigger. By changing the engine layout to transverse mid + hybrid, instead of longitudal rear, you could move the rear axle back and make it AWD, widen the door and tilt the B-pilar so it would either match to the A-pilar, or disappear completely. Also ditch the Stainless for pure carbon fiber composite. This material change smoothens all the sharp corners, brings everything up to 2020's, while maintainig the original idea to the fullest. That's how you bring the DeLorean back to the future. You dragged it back to the 1968.

I think what is throwing you all off is he made the drawing where you can see the front and back at the same time. If it was two different drawings it would be easier for yall to see what he is doing.

I own a DeLorean DMC-12 and Personally I wouldn't change a single design aspect of the DeLorean DMC-12, exterior or interior. I don't not think it was dated when it came out and it still stands out as a beautiful car today, especially the interior was so clean and simple it was really ahead of it's time. I remember hearing John DeLorean say in an interview, "I wanted the interior to still look good 40 years from now. " And it does. Mechanically and electronically the car is and has always been a nightmare. I bought my car with 6k original mike's on it and the car show show condition. Sadly that's not the case anymore. The car has never run in any real way. It's a giant, expensive paperweight that breaks my heart every day I see it. I've sent the car out to be fix and had it come back more damaged, I spent my saving getting it relates by the DeLorean dealership in Southern California and the car. Dies before I could get it home and so many things were just done wrong got he car and they refuse to take any ownership of responsibility. So basically I gave them my life savings so they could make my car even worse. It's so depressing. I keep promising my nephew I'll pick him up from school in it and I can't. I've missed out on special event because I didn't have my car. It's so depressing. My dream car has been nothing but a nightmare.
