4.5L owner here 👋🏼 Had my GT4 converted nearly exactly a year ago (including new gear ratios), and it’s everything Matt said in this review and more. It’s a much tauter, more involved car now, with heaps of torque everywhere in the rev range. Absolute rocket ship compared to the stock 3.8L, and Rick is a class act that has been amazing to work with. If you’ve got a GT4 and are considering bolt-on power adders, you’re truly wasting time and money. Instead of spending $18-20k on exhaust, plenum, runners, throttle body, etc., you’re genuinely better off banking a few extra dollars and sending your car to DeMan; you’ll be getting a complete package that has proven performance figures and requires zero guesswork from you.

I recently bought one of these on the secondary market. This one is a 2016 981, DeMan converted in early 2021, with the LimIted Slip Diff and the shorter gears. I am stepping up from a heavily modded 991.1 911S coupe. In comparison, the DeMan GT4 is a pure sports car, with no daily driver aspirations. It’s much less comfortable, it’s loud, and it demands focus, not to mention the manual gearbox. So much more visceral. A real drive. This one dyno’d at 554 hub horsepower. My 911S is about 370 to the wheels; the bigger power supply is definitely noticeable. Looking forward to getting it on track.

I've been waiting for weeks to see this review. I had the pleasure of visiting Rick and Mattie at DeMan some weeks ago. I was taken for a ride in this very car, keep in mind at that time I owned a C6 Z06 (heads/cam/intake/fuel system/flex fuel/exhaust 618whp 9.9@141mph siting on LG Coliovers/Swaybars and R888R) which wasnt and isn't a slow car by any means. Rick took me for a spin on the same road you had closed down no less. I was blown away, it felt like a V8 was in this car. Keep in mind I have a 997 Carrera S with a LS3 swap making 445/435 to the wheels. That GT4 felt like a mini Z06 with attitude and power for days. The gearing just exploits in total perfection... The car you drove was for sale and I was soooooooooo tempted to buy it. Alas I grabbed a uniquely spec'd 991.1 Turbo to play with. But man this car forced me to recalibrate my thinking on whether I needed outright power or the combo this package offered. I may regret it but I am tempted to just have all three cars and be broke LOL. Great review, awesome team at DeMan for sure and the amazing cars they have laying around is crazy. BTW DeMan been doing this for 3+ years, they do amazing work and their development is without a doubt, without shortcuts. But its worth mentioning the base cost of the mod at $28K to $35K depending on end results. Also worth noting the Porsche 718 GT4RS is expected to come out this year. With a 4.5L, PDK and 500hp+. With an estimated average cost of a new 718 GT4 at $99.2K + $28K in mods and loss of factory warranty, and you are about where the RS is expected to sell for. With warranty. A used 981 GT4 like mine can be add for about $85-90K. But worth consider it if I could keep the original engine unmolested and have a drop in a CRATE engine. That would cost about $15K more than BORING out the original block. Or if you blow the engine out of warranty, and if the block is salvageable. This is a great option.
@SP-nw1et3 жыл бұрын
The other thing - would the 4.5L pass emissions in all 50 states? I guess a motorsports shop isn't subject to the same emissions and fuel efficiency restrictions than an OEM like Porsche would be, which lets them have a more aggressive drivetrain. In that sense, the 718 GT4RS would be fully compliant but wouldn't sound anywhere as good as this 4.5L thanks to the OPFs. EDIT: According to Rick DeMan on Rennlist, a few customers out in CA have been able to pass emissions and register the car.

freakin wicked. sharky might have to dip into his bag of tricks. only problem is for anyone who wants a motor like this for a backdate will spend the same amount as buy a gt4 lol... seriously this has to cost 50k in crate engine fashion. i googled porsche engines couple days ago. holy balls! 187k for 918 motor.....still this guy has to be so epic. awesome video as usual matt. cheers

Doing a great job Hagerty! Maybe the best automotive videos on you tube!

Amazing car! I'd say the music was a bit loud at times, and REMEMBER it's a car vid! When you have exhaust noise as sweet as the Cayman you don't need music. The only music we're here to hear is the car.

Really good video but maybe a little bit overedited and overcut, we like Matt - that's why you got him - let us listen to what he has to say.

987 roller for $15,000 plus. $5000 coilovers, GT3 control arms, brake upgrade, and this engine with a reworked gearbox would be one insane Porsche for under 70K.

I definitely can't afford one of these, but I'm pretty sure I can afford to upgrade a 987 to a 3.8. Thanks for confirming that's an excellent idea.

In that form quite possibly the best drivers car that exists today!

The shifting ratios are killing the car as an enjoyable machine. Now this is proper fix!!! Love it.

Always liked the Cayman and it can handle almost anything on the Nurb.

I may travel to the States to get this done to my 2020 once she's out of warranty. Thanks Matt and Mr. DeMan.

Nice! As a 911 owner who loves Boxsters, this is what I hoped for when back seat for kids is no longer a requirement. My last thoughts to someday bother with a used Ferrari are almost crushed entirely
