the name of the poem is "To A Haggis", meaning that it's addressed to a specific one. They recite the poem when they bring out; I witnessed this on Burns Day it New Zealand, which has a strong Scottish heritage especially in the south, where the.weather is foul and they like it that way.

True haggis is similar in texture, but not as salty. You can eat it on its own, and can easily pair with *everything* from potato mash to chips to mushy peas to cripss. I hope you're able to make a trip!

We went to Scotland last year and had such an incredible time in a beautiful country with some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. And yes, I LOVE Haggis!

The traditional recipe macaroon bar is made by mixing mashed tatties and icing sugar or as you would say powder or confectioners sugar, then the mix is molded in to bar shapes which then get dipped in cooking chocolate and rolled in toasted coconut.

I'm Scottish, haggis is great! Best way to eat is is from the 'chip shop' as a haggis supper. Haggis rolled into a large sausage shape. dipped in batter and deep fried. Served with a portion of chips, or fries as you would know them. Sprinkle both with salt & vinegar, mmmm... Also macaroon bars were traditionally made way back when, and my mother in law showed me, filling made from mashed potato and icing sugar! And Fry's chocolate cream is my all time favourite! Glad to enjoyed a taste of Scotland.

I was in Edinburgh for this past Hogmanay. After a very chilly day shopping and sight seeing on the Royal Mile, there was nothing better than a warm pub, cold beer, and my first warm, filling plate of haggis with neeps and tatties! It tasted like our Thanksgiving stuffing to me, and reminded me a lot of meatloaf. It was so comforting. And yes, mine had a side of whisky sauce. I can’t wait to go backtrack Scotland-during the summer this time. 😊

Technically if its not for resale and not nor coming in on an airplane its a gift/personal mail and might get pass the random opening check 99 out of 100 timea My guess is the haggis looked like another canned good and the kinder egg was destroyed in shipment before package got xrayed so it wasn't caughf

Homemade haggis cooked directly in a pot: I use heart and liver, with salt pork, black pepper, and steel-cut oats. More or less like the real thing; purists would perhaps say less. Not bad, and I sometimes eat it with a little soy sauce...

I visited Scotland in October 2019. I ate haggis twice. The first time was in Edinburgh at a place called Cafe Presko on Gorgie Road. Their version was sliced, pan fried and very peppery. What really caught me off guard was that, while the outside was a bit crispy from the frying process, the inside was so creamy. It was truly a delight. The second time I had it was in Stonehaven. We stopped at The Caron, the birthplace of the deep fried mars bar. Their haggis was in a log form, battered and deep fried. I haven't had it in the traditional "served with neeps and tatties" manner, but the two ways I did try it, I thoroughly enjoyed, and would most certainly have it again!

Good tip: canned Haggis makes great stuffing! We have a dish called Balmoral Chicken which is chicken breast stuffed with Haggis and covered in bacon or Parma ham and baked. Serve with whisky cream sauce and mash. I've also stuffed just a regular chicken with it. The high fat content just works, and it's a good way to introduce it to squeamish people. Having said that, anyone who has tried it with me thought it was delicious. It makes me happy!!!

I tried Haggis when I went to Scotland 2 years ago. The restaurant where I ate the Haggis brought it out on a tray still in the stomach. It was tasty and they served it with the Neeps and Tatties. We ate the lablet too. I bought some English butter fudge at Trader Joe's and it is similar in taste to the Tablet

Yay - you tried haggis - glad you liked it - from your description it sounds like the canned variety is a bit less textured and mushy than 'fresh' haggis is - the oats in it give it a very grainy texture, like stuffing, and usually has a ton of white pepper in it giving it a real spicy peppery kick. It's lovely stuff.

MsCherade9 I have three in-laws who are part Scottish. One of my brother in laws told me he did try haggis once. He had to special order it. I don't know if haggis is available in Canada, nor do I know where my brother in law ordered the haggis from. I've never seen it in Canada.

Emmy, Could you make Hog Maw? It is a PA dish of loose sausage, potatoes, carrots and things cooked and packed into a pig's stomach and cooked a lot like the haggis. I get the stomachs from local butchers, even in south western PA.

I've tasted haggis a few times and loved it each time...if you ever visit Scotland you'll also have to try the individual mutton pies - cold water pastry encasing spicy minced mutton (and a little gravy if I remember rightly)...delish

Your videos are just absolutely radiant with happiness and curiosity. I love it. I'm British but from England, however, I absolutely love haggis and definitely recommend that you try it in Scotland. It's a lot more oatier-looking that the one you have, maybe a bit dryer too. The spices get me every time, it's so much more flavorful than it looks. You can have it for breakfast as well. One of my favourite restaurants in London serves a breakfast dish that consists of a haggis patty soaked in a thick whiskey sauce with a fried duck egg on top, it's incredible. I also recommend trying kippers.

I’m amazed that package got through US customs! I’m pretty sure that both haggis and kinder eggs were illegal to import into the States.

The European style kinder eggs are illegal in the US. There are different types of eggs in the US.

Maybe the restriction only applies if they are imported for resale. There are items that can be brought into the US as long as they either for personal use or sent as gifts, but it is illegal to import them for resale.

Even if it is, customs doesn't have the time and manpower to inspect every last thing that enters the country. How do you think people were able to order Cuban cigars during the embargo? Generally, the only two ways a package gets inspected is if either it's bad luck, or something seems off about the package (like the package and paperwork don't seem to line up).

Treacle is actually just the British term for molasses, Emmy. So yep, we have lots of treacle here, technically! :)

Treacle isnt molasses. Molasses is made from malt,treacle i think is from sugarbeet.

In Australia treacle and golden syrup is the same thing only treacle, is darker and richer because it is less refined, both syrups is a by product of refining sugar cane from Queensland. Molasses is a bit different, it’s a little more bitter and much thicker, but another by product of sugarcane and it’s actually good for you.

Yes! 😍 as a English lass who honeymooned in Edinburgh last year, I am now desperate to move up there! This made so so happy. Highland Coo's are gorgeous aren't they, I've wanted to own one since I was about 3 and my Aunt bought me a toy one (which I still have lol). Peppermint frys remind me of my childhood too, they are delicious.

I'm South African, but my Great Gran was Scottish and she made delicious haggis. I only ever had it a couple of times, but it was an incredible treat with mashed potatoes and sweet, roasted parsnips and peas. It was dense with a rich, peppery, clovey flavour and I used to mix it with my mash so it would last longer. My mom says she actually used to make it with heart, kidneys and ground chuck along with the usual oatmeal and suet.

If the tin is in good condition, it will be fine. The tin version is very nice but you cannot beat the propper version.

The coconut covered bar is called "macaroon" bar, the filling is made with mashed potato and icing sugar, mould into barr shapes of your choice and cover with chocolate when set and then roll in toasted, dessicated coconut. There is an old Scottish song about Coulters candy, it was pronounced "Cooters" candy though. Haggis in a can is right up there with malt whisky and Coca Cola - the product of a twisted and diseased mind!

P.S. Down South we have a pork dish called souse. i don't know if you've ever tried it. It's made from bits and spiced up. I used to watch Grandad kill the hogs and Granny would run much of it through a grinder to make it kind of like hamburger. Then she started adding spices. It can be mild or hot. I've always thought it was the result of American Scots trying to make something that tastes like haggis.

Scotland is my dream place. I love all of the culture, bagpipes and men in kilts lol. I’ve tried haggis.... definitely not for me but I can appreciate the history and culture behind it.

Yes....I was a bit shocked actually, the women who sent her the box must not have known that both Haggis and Kinder Eggs are illegal here in the US. It's important to know in cases like this what you can and cannot send. I would hate to see Emmy get into trouble.

@@lynnlee9310 They sell Kinder JOY eggs here in the US. The package comes apart into halves to separate the edible chocolate from the toy. One half is sealed with the toy, the other contains a chocolate ganache you scoop out with the included paddle.

Tablet is the best, first time trying it was when I was in Scotland visiting my dad and we got homemade tablet after eating at a really nice restaurant in Tayport. I was confused by the name, but it’s amazing. Everytime I go over I bring a bunch back!

The word "turnip" refers to two entirely different vegetables depending on where it's used. Scottish turnips (which I think are actually Swedish turnips, but I'm not positive on that) are nothing like American turnips, they're much closer to American rutabagas. So if you're making neeps and tatties in America, you'll actually be using rutabagas and potatoes, not turnips and potatoes. Parsnips aren't involved at all--but just as an aside, if you boil up a couple of parsnips with your potatoes and mash them together with a bit of butter, the flavor is delicious!

Thank you for clearing that up, kittencuffs! I didn't realize Scottish turnips are different. I have more British than American cookbooks but none of them mentioned this and I would've been using the wrong vegetable and getting the wrong flavour. And now I know an easy parsnip recipe--the ones I have come across have all been much more complicated. Thanks :D

Yes she did. In the early 90's Hollywood even produced a movie about it. They made it a comedy though and whitewashed the characters by casting Mike Myers and Nancy Travis. Still worth a look at though.

Had Haggis for the first time while nursing a hangover in Edinburgh. From a tiny butcher shop near the train station...someone told me that was the best place to get traditional Scottish food because the train employees wanted really good, fresh food. I loved it; it was sort of hangover food in a strange way. Loved black pudding more though. The canned stuff is okay but pretty different. I recently bought Haggis chips here which, amazingly, tasted like haggis.

I traveled To Edinburgh, Scotland for the first time this past May. I was scared to try Haggis but I paired it with something I am very familiar with, a Hamburger. A nice serving of spiced Haggis on top of nice Scottish beef burger after one bite I liked it! Unless your allergic give different culture's food a try.

Went to Scotland last year and I loved it. The country is gorgeous and the people are incredibly friendly. It’s interesting because most other countries I’ve been, the locals there have never been to my home country/town (Vancouver Canada) but many Scottish people I spoke to actually have visited! They said Canada and Scotland are pretty similar...and I’d have to agree. Definitely felt at home there :) Can’t wait to visit again one day.

It's 'cause it's in a can and is cold - once it's cooked it sort of falls apart into a grainy, darker texture - more like stuffing.

I’ve eaten fresh haggis, but not in Scotland. We lived in England for 3.5 years and went down to the pub on Burns night. I was so surprised how much I enjoyed it, very good! I don’t normally like those bits of the animal. Thanks for sharing.
