Haikyuu: Battle at the Garbage Dump is finally out, and has received fantastic reception... however now there's a BIG problem.
The first few seasons of Haikyuu, containing Karasuno's matches against Aoba Johsai, Shiratorizawa and Inarizaki, went through at a rate of 5-7 minutes per chapter.
The Nekoma vs Karasuno game, was under 3 minutes per chapter. Ouch. The reviews of the film are still fantastic, but there's a major concern here.
If we're not given 3 films to adapt the remainder of Haikyuu, we're likely to see a LOT cut from the film. We definitely won't see Bokuto's match, and a LOT of the Kamomedai game is going to be out too.

A much more casual video than usual, just having a discussion around the final movie and what's left to come. Shoutout to my old laptop I last used at Uni that somehow managed to run premiere pro and survive (did sound like a jet engine at times though lol). THOUGHTS ON THE MOVIE: Just gonna give a short answer cos I'll probably make a video on this: I loved it, absolutely loved it. But yeah, the runtime definitely still needed to be longer.

Even tho I still preferred 100% the anime pace over the movie pace, it is what it is.. Now that the movie making so much profit, I have faith the rest of the manga would be done justice.

The film literally encapsulated the entire match pretty much bar for bar in 80 minutes. The Nekoma match is longer than the Kamomedai and Jackals match, and Brazil isn't even an arc lmao. It's a beach tournament you don't even really see much of, and Hinata inspiring Oikawa, which is the only real meat of the "arc". Kamomedai match consists of two half sets of content and the third set isn't even properly seen. When you look at the structural storytelling of how the film will go, Hinata becoming the ultimate decoy, getting sick and the team losing, Hinata growing his skills in Brazil to ultimately make it in the big leagues.

There is so much technique taught through the manga. So much detail. Haikyuu is the encyclopedia for Volleyball in my opinion. You can learn concepts and techniques quicker (at least you start to understand them) before anyone in real life tells them to you. Honestly, every coach has his own approach to the sport, so most of the time you won't even hear about certain concepts...and you'll miss out. Reading the Haikyuu manga (and watching the anime) just makes you a slightly better Volleyball player compared to if you didn't read/watch it. Haikyuu is just that complete. An encyclopedia.

There's no indication so far that there will be an OVA or a 3rd movie, in fact it was explicitly stated that these two movies would serve as the finale of the series, sure you have the example of Attack on Titans having like 25 final seasons but that's an exception, so there's nothing guaranteeing that there will be more Haikyu!! anime, that's why it's worrying that unless the announcement was a marketing lie, all that there's left is a 1.5 to 2 hour movie to adapt whatever they can fit in there.

I got to the point where I thought the match was going to end in the first hour. In my opinion the kamomedai match should be the next movie along with everyone saying goodbye. Then turn the Brazil and jackal arcs into a series. One final movie to cover the rest is ridiculous to even thing about.

Missing scenes?? There was one core scene that was missing, which was Ukai and Nekomata as kids. And you can barely argue the 1 page flashback of Inuoka was integral. When you look at the structural storytelling of how the film will go, Hinata becoming the ultimate decoy, getting sick and the team losing, Hinata growing his skills in Brazil to ultimately make it in the big leagues. Lets not pretend Jackals match was point for point like the Karasuno Nekoma match was. It was all central around highlights of Hinata and just how much he has grown despite when we had last seen him in his first year. Making a 2 hour film will work out fine, just like how any 2 hour film tells a story....

As someone who read the manga after watching the movie, in my opinion at least I think it covered everything about as well as it could’ve, the emotional moments really stick out as powerful to me and the message of pushing yourself to your natural limits with Kenma is a powerful one. The choice to do the final rally from kenmas pov was a really strong choice and left me tearing up. That being sad, it’s easy to say this movie did feel a little rushed. Missing a bit of the dynamic scenes from previous matches but the animation quality itself is was overall spectacular, especially toward the end. I’d probably give it a 7/8 out of 10

They'll probably make Hinata narrate his Brazil arc and match against Kageyama just like he narrated his second and third year, so just his voice and some frames of him moving to Brazil, playing on the beach, then playing as a professional against Kageyama and then just as in manga showing them some years later playing together, then against each other again and it ends.

Just watched the movie and I *loved* it, but do wish they could have extended it closer to 2 hrs so we could get more scenes, more rallies. Still an amazing adaptation though, highly recommend anyone on the fence to go watch it. As for the remaining parts, I really really hope for 2 movies but like you said I don't think they want the time skip to be on its own. It would honestly just work best being back in an episode format but I highly doubt that, so we can only pray for a longer movie

I just watched the movie yesterday, and I just left the theaters feeling unsatisfied. Compared to previous seasons it felt like we were rushing through any emotional points in the story. One interesting way to see the movie is that it may be a more accurate portrayal of what it's like to actually play volleyball. There's no time for you to stay on what happened previously, you have to adapt now or you lose. But I like this series for the story and I didn't feel we had any time to spend time with the story.

I honestly think the biggest sin was the shortened runtime, but not only just because there was so much cut content/shortened arcs and quotes (when ukai simply said “the hardest path is in fact the easiest” without the context of before), it was the fact that they couldn’t have gone wrong with a too-long movie, the entire overarching story between the two is how exhausting the match is, how long it drags out, the sapping of stamina of both teams to the point where they spend time DURING A RALLY hoping that the ball will just fall so they don’t have to move anymore. Missing out on that entirely was probably my biggest criticism, and the other one was the complete lack of reaction from the gym, sure you had the cheers and the cuts to reactions, but in the manga it is THE match going on, the place is going absolutely nuts to the point where Bokuto is looking over and getting inspired by just how nuts the place is going on these exhausting rallies with incredible spikes and digs, I don’t know, it just felt a little underwhelming for me

To me, the movie was extremes I loved it and I hated it I hated it because the movie was trying to fit 35 (manga episodes?) into an hour and a half. The amazing thing that I loved about Haikyu from season 1-4 is the character arc, the inner monologues, the growth, evolution of the team as individuals and together. This movie hardly made that impact since it's only an hour and a half long. The animation style was very different. The angles of the shots, the synchronised attacks, all those animation styles and choices were completely different and I wasn't the biggest fan. What absolutely slapped about the movie was it was Haikyu. And we love Haikyu.

I've watched the film and it's great! Most of it is in the film BUT 1) you can't stay in the moment for even a second before the next thing happens. And 2) they're able to squeeze as much as they can because they skip points (a la matches before Shiratorizawa), the Nekoma match went through so long because you really were in the match experiencing everything as it happens. This isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, just a difference that I observed. The first point is definitely a big downside of the film. You're not allowed to breathe at all in between moments.

i just watched the movie today and i thought it was honestly really good and defo didnt disappoint even in comparison to the haikyuu manga/prev anime as a whole . however it was noticeable to me, even though im an anime only rn, that they cut out a lot of the rallies and smaller developments leading to some very minor “choppiness” and rushed feeling just as someone who’s rewatched the show countless times and is familiar with the matches, but i can still say confidently that the parts that were animated were done beautifully and definitely left an impact on me. i can definitely see it being even better though- perhaps even a masterpiece if it was allowed to simmer for longer …. overall it’s a brilliant addition to a brilliant series and i rlly hope the haikyuu as an animated series is completed with just as much care and time 😢😢

While Haikyuu up to season 4 was already good, how the manga continues afterwards elevated the series to a 11/10 for me. It's so unbelievably rare that a series somehow gets better with time, but Haikyuu even manages to end with a bitter sweet yet fully satisfying roar. With that said, I've been feeling completely dead inside since watching the movie yesterday, similar to game of thrones' ending. What the hell happened? So many pivotal scenes and breadcrumb stories were skipped, and the touching ones that were in (like Zukki and Yamaguchis serve&block part) were sped through with a few image flashbacks. Hinata's first few boom jumps in the manga still give me shivers, but the one we got in the movie was underwhelming as shit. I don't know how it's possible that Ukai senior's final ghostly handshake elicited next to no reaction from the theater audience. Not once in the years I've waited for this movie did I think it could be bad or even mediocre. The source material is so insanely good and the shows prior season's have been incredible, even during the COVID era. Yuki Hayashi has been consistently bringing scenes to life through his music FOR YEARS, but after the movie, I wasn't able to come up with a single banger. Aside from Kenma's incredible final POV rally, I consider this movie a weak 4/10, which is lower than many of the throwaway OVAs.. I'm genuinely bummed for all the fans who already like the show but who will likely miss out on the manga now that there is a lower-effort medium available. Shit I'm bummed just in general to the point where my morning workout felt like an anemic slog. Maybe I'm the problem and had way too high expectations to think that this wouldn't be yet another half-baked anime movie.

I just came back from the cinema and even though im a die hard haikyuu fan, i got similar feelings. I don't know what were they thinking when they had around 10 episodes worth of content and decided to put it into a 80 minute movie. 10 episodes is roughly 4 hours. I kinda felt like watching a recap episode of the match to be honest. There's a ton of impactful scenes, that need proper build up and so far, haikyuu has done that incredibly well, like i've never seen an anime/manga that can create such good build up to a scene that hits you like a truck (tanaka cross spike or hinata receive for example), but here it just lacks that. Tsukki-yamaguchi moment was over so fast i barely noticed, hinatas big jump moment was probably the only thing that had a decent build up to it, but on the other hand, it had, in my opinon, awful music choice. The track was way to much uplifting and hero-like it just didnt fit and anime soundtracks are basically my favorite part of watching animes so i felt really disappointed with that scene in particular. Overall it wasn't bad, i still enjoyed it and had fun watching, but as someone who's a haikyuu fan for over 12 years and was really impacted by the series throughout, I think i had my expectations way too high.

I loved the visual in the movie and still appreciated the hard work and the quality of the animation and the sound engineering but it lacked that off courts scenes I missed.

What sucks as well is the distribution of the film. I live in a decent size metro area. 4 cities that is about the same size as KC. We have six theaters within 20 minutes of me and none showing Haikyuu movie. I need to go 2 hours away to watch it.

Like most of you, saw the movie earlier. And although i enjoyed it, it did fall short of my lofty expectations. I expected more build-up from certain scenes and more epicness from others. It made me think that having this all in 1 movie and not waiting for a weekly chapter to build up the hype took a lot of those aspects out of it. And without getting into the specifics for spoiler reasons, i also preferred some words used in the manga translation over the subs here since it just gave more impact. Overall, my take was this was more of a tribute movie over an actual animated movie adaptation of the source material. I still enjoyed it but the long wait since the last season to the release of this movie made the anticipation hard to match and unfortunately didnt do it for me

I'm guessing they'll take 90% of the time to do the Kamomedai match and do the post time-skip as if it was something like a "post-credits" scene, possibly ending at the start of the MSBY x Jackals match the same way that the manga ends at the start of the Olympics match. Or maybe they'll just skip that match entirely, who knows?

For the last part. I think maybe it should be a season. But after watching the Nekoma vs Karasuno movie. I believe it was the right decision. Having it episodically, and drawn out to 12 episodes...AGAIN like Shiatorizawa ...having it as 1 CONTINUOUS GAME was much more interesting than 1 episode per week. BUT that's because this is the game we've been anticipating since the beginning, but the Kamomedai is one we can get as a season

I think that alot of the brazil arc can be cut out and moved more into a montage of what hinta did to get to the level he end up at and they could honestly end the series with him scoring the point where he puts his arms and says "im back" or whatever it was that he says. They can pan to Kagyamas devilish smile and maybe the reactions of his former teamates and then fade to black with him having his arms up. IMO that would finish off the series well showing hinta reached the peak and while the outcome of the match is a full circle moment, we dont need to see him win yo finish his story because the story is about him achieving his goals despite his disadvantages and i think that moment encapsulates that idea very well

The movie was really good! But it was missing one of Haikyuu's biggest strengths for me: showcasing everyone's contribution. It was good for my Kenma-loving heart, but even then I was always waiting for Kageyama, Yaku, and Noya's shining moments. I didn't specifically remember what those moments were as it's been a while since my last reread, but I knew they had them bec Furudate had always emphasized the strengths of even his smallest side characters. I felt it was criminal to basically cut all of Kageyama's highlight moments bec those also tie in directly with Hinata's. I will hold out hope for a season 5, and 6, and 7. 😢

I'll watch the Garbage Dump movie soon (probably at monday). I have a lot of high expectations for some scenes, especially... to avoid as much spoilers as possible, I'll only use the words "cage" and "BAM". About what to expect for the next Haikyuu animations, I can't help but have high hopes for the Brazil arc (Furudate visited the country to make them justice and, well... I'm brazilian, so it's quite cool to see the country exposed positively, as a place to hone volleyball skills). HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD, ANYONE WHO WANTS TO AVOID THEM, BE CAREFUL: It's sad to think about not having the Fukurodani match, Bokuto's development there is awesome. Also, I like a lot how Hinata and Oikawa develop a friendship in Brazil, but I guess it will be extremely rushed or not shown at all.

I honestly wouldnt mind if they cut some of the matches short. We've seen plenty of matches in the anime, and I found some scenes in season 4 to get a bit repetitive. Honestly, the most I remember from the manga is the brazil arc, further character development with where everyone ended up in the future, and the msby match. Honestly the characters themselves are what drew me to Haikyuu so much. I just hope they highlight the characters in the final movie. //Also maybe a controversial take: I wouldnt mind if the Kamomedai match ends up being just a flashback and we start off with Shoyou in Brazil

The Last Arc NEEDS to be SLOW. If they don't adapt the Last Arc with a little bit of slow pacing it won't do justice to the manga's ending. Also there are 4 Arcs left after the movie. 1. Fukorodani vs Mujinazaka - Doing this arc in OVA won't make any sense. Its like 90% Bokuto and Akaashi's character development. (i don't want this to be nekoma vs fukorodani where the skipped through most of the things) 2. Kamomedai vs Karasuno - I think they can rush a bit here but I would personally like more of Hinata playing with the blockers left and right. 3. Hinata in Brazil - I need this arc to be slow and just focus on Hinata's development. 4. Schweiden Adlers vs MSBY Black Jackals - They need to go all out on the animation.

My hope still is that after making money with the movies they will take them to make a series out of it like they did with demon slayer. Because I agree the Haikyuu ending was a piece of art. It was such an important message about maturing and every single chapter was thrilling in the final game as well as holding meaning for the individual characters. Plus it was an astounding love for detail that the series would have ended after 8 years in the year of the Japanese Olympics (covid ruined that one too) , which is the same time span between the beginning and end of the series.

If possible I would really love it if you could cover the character story of Vash from Trigun Stampede Remake By Studio Orange...I just feel like Trigun's remake is the most unappreciated thing in the anime industry...from the animation ( it is THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN PERIOD. ) , to the story ( incredible. ), to the sound tracks and characters... By the end of ep3 , you are completely hooked in...I guess it goes so unappreciated becuz the first two eps are thoroughly used to set up the world. The world of trigun is very complex...full of mysteries n such. And yes, I also hope that the Haikyuu manga gets justice...It was kinda sad to see the legendary battle get such less screen time. It still pains my heart...

They did the same thing for the stage play. Everything after the Nekoma match was crammed into the final play. Haikyuu Stage is already a much more condensed version, but fans were still complaining about it so much. Haikyuu Stage was wildly popular (with fans even flying in internationally), so it was never a matter of lacking interest or funds. So their plans for the second film is not a surprise but still largely frustrating. I want to hope that they change their minds but what's announced has been announced. I feel like given the time frame and the content, the movie was very well thought out and directed. Sure the vibe and pacing differs from their usual style and I honestly think that if they remade the entire movie into a typical anime season w ~13 episodes (like what they did for the demon slayer mugen train) it’ll do the entire series much better. Decided to rewatch Haikyuu after watching the movie and felt that a lot of inter-team interactions, subtle comments and the players’ thought processes (excluding kenma’s) were just not there or not enough. The movie placed a huge spotlight on kenma which is nice but a lot of background was just missing

I agree that they will cut off 95% of the Fukurodani match, showing at least a couple of rallies but I also think they'll release an OVA with the match at some point. That leaves us with roughly ~30 mins of each arc, Kamomedai, Brazil, and Jackals match. Which is quite good if you ask me, prolly Jackals match won't be as long as it's more of a celebratory match and wrapping up of the series. Also, the Kamomedai match doesn't have quite the moments to make it as long as other matches. Gao's rivalry with Hoshiumi can be left mostly undeveloped, and Hirugami's journey probably as well (though I'd really like if they didn't). I have high hopes for this, the movie has been a revival for the series and it's doing reaaaaally good, so they might steer towards a more lenghty movie, or even another movie. Really hope they can deliver the great end this series deserves.

I think they _are_ going to cut the whole Brazil arc. They'll gloss over it training montage-style. Either the Kamomedai or Schweiden Adlers v. MSBY Black Jackals match will be drastically shortened. An argument could be made either way - the whole "who is the next Small Giant" storyline on one hand, and the Hinata v. Kagayama payoff on the other, so I think the Kamomedai match will be shortened if not cut entirely or just kind of glossed over as a leadup to them not getting to the finals of the tournament and going into the training montage, which I think is also a distinct possibility. I would hate that - I love Hoshiumi - but it saves having to introduce a whole new character to a potentially uninitiated audience and would leave more space for the Hinata v. Kageyama match. The (possibly post-credit, as @francophiriamahia1900 suggests) end will be the shot of Hinata and Kageyama's fist bump after the first rally against Argentina with the voiceover copied straight from the manga. I think there is a possibility the only way we're going to see the Kamomedai match animated is in an OVA or mini-series, regardless of the success of this first movie. [edit] And I don't think we'll ever see the Bokuto match animated. Speaking of success: does anyone know how well it is doing? Where I went it was in a small room of a multi-screen cinema, which was optimistically maybe half full. Granted this was the second weekend of it running and in that cinema it was on at least once a day every day. [edit] I loved the movie. I don't think they cut anything that was critical to the story, but they obviously definitely did cut stuff that fans will have missed (me included). By the same token, I felt there were definitely several moments that you had to know at least the anime for to understand what was going on - little "insider jokes", if you will. Like for example, they actually expanded the first meeting of Hinata and Kenma, but never explain what the context for that meeting was. And the emotional moments definitely hit home for me, very well supported by the amazing soundtrack.
