I'm really glad that this series exists because you really delve into the history of hairstyles. In a lot of videos you see people being so focused on staying modern and hip that they insist it's just "inspired" by a certain century, rather than going all in like you do here. It's very creative of you to do this.

When I was in Greece I saw a ton of people with absolutely gorgeous natural curls. So I don't think all Greeks back then had to curl their hair) Great video though!

They did actually curl their hair, either by pinning or by using specific braiding techniques. It wasn't really about having natural curls, but having perfect curls - which natural hair doesn't usually provide.

People back then didn't really curl their hair so often, I am sure there must have been multiple techniques to do so but most Greeks had natural curly hair and the effect of curly hair could be done by braiding

I really, really like your history tutorials; especially the hair history. I'm a bit more into hair than makeup, but your makeup tutorials are awesome too. It's so refreshing to see someone investigate the history behind a look/looks, instead of just demonstrating. It's very important to understand where things come from, so that you know their meaning, and then the subject becomes more valuable to you. Some of these historical styles are modified and worn today, and now people will know where these styles originated from. There are not very many historical resources for hair and makeup like there are for fashions. I love history and especially the history of "looks". So naturally I was very excited to stumble upon your channel. You do a good, thorough, job on your historical facts, and ending the videos with a hair tutorial on the period is so genius. Your an intelligent woman, and we need more of that. Thank you for all your hard work; and I've now been able to add a few new (lady like) hair styles to my repertoire. (One more thing. It's hard to be a lady like woman among a sea of unladylike influence. I am very lady like, and constantly looking for styles that reflect my self respect and modesty. You have helped me to add a couple of new modest, but feminine looks to my repertoire. These historical styles were worn by self respecting modest women, thus they reflect modesty and beauty. Thank your for taking the time to show the styles meanings and how to do them.)

A lot of Greek women had very long, thick and wavy hair as attested to by the art of the period. Think of our current day actress Melina Kanakaredes as a prime example.
@medeaworbs6970
@medeaworbs6970 4 жыл бұрын
they also used hairpieces thought to make their hair longer and thicker. Art is always about perfection so obviously those are not a 100% accurate depiction. Also you should specify which period you mean when talking about that. What we now know as "Ancient Greece" went through many different periods - Bronze Age is considered the first period by Archeologists - then Minoan, later dorian and ionian, and even later hellenistic...

Love this hairstyle! I wonder how you're doing these intricate hairstyles by yourself without being able to see the back of your head! You definitely have a talent when it comes to hair. The makeup could really stand to improve though... if you really don't wear blush or crazy eyeshadow colors, you should just get one of those all in one palettes so you can have an array of blush, eyeshadow, and lip colors.

Very interesting series! Could you explain how people washed their hair, and how often, through the ages? I’m wondering if they bound their hair up at times because it was greasy or to control lice.
@medeaworbs6970
@medeaworbs6970 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, depending on what time period we are looking at, lice and grease wasn't as much of an issue as we think. We modern folks tend to associate "washing oneself only rarely" with uncleanliness when really, they did have a toilet routine. It just doesn't apply to modern ideas. But they didn't really have lice in, say, Greece, they would use hairpaste and regular combing to prevent the hair from getting greasy and catching bugs or lice.

Women didn't often let their hair down. The hair was mostly fastened with headbands and ribbons so that it doesn't touch the back of your neck. It also had sometimes a kind of cone shape and some loose pieces coming out, but people wouldn't often let it down like that

If you were NOT using heat on your hair, what kind of curlers would you use? My impulse is to do long, tidily wrapped rag curlers like they used in the early Victorian period for sausage curls, but I don’t know if that would be too structured.

@lyndapaige7159
@lyndapaige7159 8 жыл бұрын
+Angel Jordan (信仰) It's VERY possible that they simply tied their curls with cloth strips--that's been done for centuries and it's much safer. Sleeping in tied on cloth strips for curls--especially to get those tiny tendrils/curls around the face which can be seen on the statues, would be simpler and then they'd just hold them in place with pomade or whatever they used at the time. Of course if they had naturally curly or wavy hair then they'd just need the pomade. Men also had curls that framed the face. For longer hair they may have simply slept in braids--that's what I do! No fuss at all. And it's possible they did so even for the face framing tendrils, though from the statues I'd say the cloth strips were more likely. They may have even set them in what we call "pin curls" the night before, though I'm not sure how well hair pins (as opposed to "bobby pins" which they did NOT have) would work for setting those short tendrils--fabric ties would probably work better. I don't know that they had the fire heated curling irons at that time, that may have been a much later invention. The first I could confirm was in the 1800s. It is very easy to burn the hair even with a modern curling iron, the risk would have been much greater when heating it in a fire. From what I read the hot tongs or irons were first used on wigs not on attached hair--which makes sense from a safety stand point.

+ebisawkward they used copper rods, which they heated up and wrapped the hair around it, like an ancient curling wand : )
@coralaisly
@coralaisly 7 жыл бұрын
There are tons of ways to curl your hair. There were the rods like the other poster mentioned and there was also wet setting curls. When the hair is wet, you use a mixture of gels made from ground seeds like flax and water, and you wrap the hair around rags, then tie it and let it dry. If you watched Little House on the Prairie as a kid and saw the women and girls with their hair tied in little pieces of cloth and tied, that was for curling. If you use a setting agent like a gel, it will stay more in a curl. If you set it using just water, it'll be more wavy and prone to falling more.

I have a little funny story about hair and ancient Rome XD it's not about hairstyles though, sorry. Apuleius is a Roman author from the second century after Jesus Christ. He wrote a book called "The golden ass". in book 3 of this story, a witch's servant is supposed to take the hair of a young beautiful boy which the witch love, so that the witch can make him fall in love with her. The servant can't, and instead she take hair from wineskins that were juste made. The witch does her magic ritual, not knowing it's not human hair, and the three wineskins become alive. They go and fight with the main character of the story, an aristocrat named Lucius. Lucius is drunk, he doesn't know what's happening and he kills the three wineskins. The morning after, he realises he committed murder, and the city makes a false trial of this false murder, which is absolutely hilarious. After this incident, Lucius hears the truth from the servant and ask to try to do magic too. The servant by mistake maķes him into a donkey, and the remedy (simply roses), will only be available by morning. But then during the night thieves rob the house, take the donkey, then the donkey goes away, then he gets sold to a farmer; so on and so on while our poor Lucius try to find roses. It's hilarious, and bit 18+, go read it XD

Depends on their class, whether or not they had servants, where and when they lived... one methods was tying it into knots, another involved pinning, another braiding around strips of fabric and they did actually sometimes heat up metallic objects to curl the hair with - but that was only wealthy noblefolk who had servants for help
