As a now old white ( as people who are darker than me like to assume I am) my best friend in kindergarten through 2nd grade was very dark complected. Her mother was from Ethiopia and her father was from Paris. She had these beautiful twists with different colored cute little hair clips. I had 2 basic braids on either side of my head to keep this stick straight hair from becoming what my Mom called a rats nest and taking hours to comb out. Mom would put silky ribbons on the ends of my plats to match my clothes. On Bridget’s last day at our school she gave me a pink poodle hair clip on one of my plats and I tied my ribbon on her beautiful twist. Here it is 50 years later and I still get teary eyed wondering what life did my friend have.. I always pictured her a beautiful model.. I still have that pink poodle hair clip in my jewelry box and throughout the years wore it.. even now.. and smile.

My hair is extremely coarse, and straightened hair is easy to comb and maintain every day. The texture of African American women's hair is the only type that can be styled in any way. Hairstyles are forms of expression. Let people do whatever they want without giving them heat and judgment. Just my expert opinion!

My daughter was excluded from the "straight hair club" in kindergarten. She was the only black girl the others were indian, asian and white. I offered to straighten it but she sternly said ' No momma, I like my hair!" The club❤ only lasted 2 days. Her "real" friends reported it to the teacher and the girl (5 yrs old) who started it said it was because the teachers and staff "always told my daughter her hairstyles were so pretty and it made this other girl mad.😢They have to be taught that they are beautiful and don't need to look like everyone else. I was so proud my daughter was happy with herself and the way she looked. To each her own. Glad your daughter was happy with her hair. Learning just how versatile we can be with our hair also builds confidence and understanding of self. Good job mamma for being attentive to her concerns😊❤

Dina I just LOVE this. You’ve started your baby girl out with bomb confidence in who she is!! I’m astounded at just how versatile your hair is and I am loving that women are moving back to their natural hair. I grew up in the 70’s & as a child I was a mascot for my aunt’ college basketball. I was in awe of the girls’ big hair as a kid. Tell your baby girl we all like her pretty hair too:)💞🦋

I am mixed with 3B/3C hair and I always wanted straight hair as a child partially bc my white mom got stressed when doing my hair. She almost gave me a relaxer until a mixed woman at the beauty store told her not to do it 😭 I've learned to love my curls too. I'll take natural over straightened any day. I hope all curlie girlies know that their hair is beautiful as is and to only change it if its fun.

She looks so beautiful and I know that she is beautiful no matter how she wears her hair! I find it so sad that she had been wanting to get her straightened since moving to that neighborhood. I know that many in our community are well aware of how that can go. May this beautiful daughter know the power and the beauty that dwells within and may it be so unshakable that nothing without can interrupt what she knows. @@shawnjackson6242 I'm white too, and I genuinely wish that more high profile Black women would wear natural styles. One is for little girls like this sweetheart, but also because a lot of whites are so accustomed to seeing straight hair on Black women that natural styles look "weird" to them. I get that's you're damned if you do, damned if you don't, which is absolutely unfair, but so long as Black women continue to embrace straight hair, whites will continue to see that as normal. I make an extra effort to tell Black girls with natural styles how pretty their hair is. I want them to love who they are.

I can relate. I never disliked my hair until I moved to a white neighborhood and the kids would make fun of my hair. My mom would do two big puffs and they would tease me and call me Micky mouse. I hated my hair and hated myself for not looking like my new friends. It took me years to accept myself and love my hair.
