Lake Toya Chinkojima Park
Chinkojima is located about 300 meters into Lake Toya Onsen Town, after National Route 230 in Toyako Town hits Lake Toya at the tunnel exit. It has been developed as Chinkojima Park as part of the Lake Toya Usuzan Geopark. When viewed from the sky, there is a terrain that juts out into Lake Toya, and the bean-shaped Chinkojima is connected to the end of the sandbar.
This small uninhabited island has a circumference of about 200 meters, an area of about 2000 square meters, and a maximum elevation of 84.1 meters. Lake Toya is 84 meters above sea level, so the island is only about 1 meter above the lake surface. In the autumn season, it is possible to cross the sandbar without difficulty and land on the island, but when the water level rises, the sandbar is submerged and the island is isolated. One theory is that the island was named "Chinkojima" (Chinkojima) because it is possible to walk to the island depending on the season.
In the center of the island, there are two monuments engraved with "Namu Zenjo Ryuo," "Amaterasu Omikami," and "Okuninushi no Kami."
1. Namu Zenjo Ryuo: This monument was erected in March 1918.
Namu Zenjo Ryuo is a Buddhist deity who is said to bring happiness and safety.
2. Amaterasu Omikami and Okuninushi no Kami: These monuments represent deities that appear in Japanese mythology.
Amaterasu Omikami is the sun goddess, and Okuninushi is the god who governs the land and fertility.
