@@KenshoQuest hey, in the website it says for shinjuku it is 6100yen and for odawara it is 5000yen which says only hakone area, so I am slight confused if it only covers the hakone area transportation and not the round trip to odawara or will it also cover the round trip to odawara? you also just mentioned hakone area and said it doesn't cover round trip from odawara to shinjuku but not about the the round trip from odawara to hakone. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi. With either version of the Hakone Free Pass, it covers unlimited rides between Odawara Station and Hakone-Yumoto Station on the Hakone Tozan Train. Once you reach Odawara Station, you are within the covered area for unlimited rides. Most people who are coming from Shinjuku Station will ride the train all the way to Hakone-Yumoto Station, rather than getting off at Odawara. @@lilyrawat245

Yay! Glad to have helped. For anyone staying the night in the Gora area, after taking the cable car down the hill to Gora Station, you can head to your accommodation (instead of taking the train back to Hakone-Yumoto Station).

Thanks for the very informative video! Our hotel is in Gora - once we arrive in Hakone Yumoto station, can we do the sightseeing loop counter-clock-wise? Drop off luggage in Gora hotel then go to volcanic area etc.

Yep! Drop off luggage in Gora. Then cable car, ropeway to volcanic valley, sightseeing boat across lake Ashi. Then you could either take a bus to Hakone-Yumoto Station and then train to Gora, OR you could back track and cross the lake again with the sightseeing boat, ride the ropeway again, and take the cable car to Gora. If you get the Hakone Free Pass, it’s unlimited rides. 🌸 Heidi

Thank you for the useful information! Do you have to make separate reservations for any of the rides (the boats, cable car, etc.)? Did your family also visit any of the Onsen theme parks (Hakone Kowakien Yunessun)?

Hi! The only thing we needed to reserve was the Romancecar from/to Shinjuku. For everything else (pirate ship, ropeway, cable car, etc) we just showed our Hakone Free Passes (which sometimes got stamped) and got right on. We didn’t need to exchange for actual tickets or anything like that. I wanted to visit Yunessun Onsen theme park, but we didn’t have a chance on this trip. We stayed in an Airbnb near Iriuda Station (one stop from Hakone-Yumoto). It was a nice 2 bedroom place. But it was located up a steep hill! Our kids loved the Open Air Museum. We spent a whole day there. They also enjoyed glass blowing at Crafthouse in Gora Park. We also visited the Natural History Museum, since we were a short walk away. And of course, the sightseeing loop mentioned in this video. Going to an onsen is one thing we didn’t fit into this trip. And I would have liked visiting more museums. 🌺 Heidi

Awesome and very informational video! I will be using your link to purchase the Hakone Free Pass. I will be staying in Shinjuku and then heading to Hakone afterwards. I already bought a JR Pass. Do you think it's faster/more convenient to take the JR Pass down to Odawara station and then onwards to Hakone? Or would it be better to take the Romance Car from Shinjuku straight to Hakone-Yumoto station?

Hi. Since you have a JR Pass, you can use that to take a Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Odawara Station. Thanks for wanting to use our link, but you don't really need the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku. Once you arrive at Odawara Station, you can purchase a Hakone Free Pass that includes only the Hakone area. From Odawara you can take a train to Hakone-Yumoto, which is already covered by the pass. There isn't much room on the bus for luggage. There is luggage forwarding available at Hakone-Yumoto Station, if you need to ship your bags to your hotel. Or there are luggage lockers for the day.

Great vid! I was wondering do you know what's the baggage allowance for hakone free pass (romancecar and other buses like odakyu)? I have 2 suitcases with me (1 medium size, 1 small) is it going to be a problem going on the train and buses?

Hi. I think that would be fine to take on the train. However, the buses were sometimes standing-room-only for us. That wouldn’t be fun with luggage. Are you planning a day trip to Hakone? If so, you could leave luggage at Shinjuku station. Are you planning to spend a couple nights in Hakone? If so, you could bring your suitcases on the train to Hakone-Yumoto. Then either: store them at the train station until you check into your accommodation, or use the luggage delivery service to ship them to your accommodation. Hope that helps. 🌺 Heidi

Hi. There are two different versions of the Hakone Free Pass. The one we link to includes round trip between Shinjuku and Hakone. Affiliate link: geni.us/hakonefreepass So you can use it both ways, or just one way. If you have that version you could use it just Hakone to Shinjuku. However, this type of pass needs to be picked up at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. The other version does not include transportation to and from Tokyo. It only includes transportation within the Hakone area, starting from Odawara Station. If you plan to buy the Hakone Free Pass in person at Hakone-Yumoto Station, this is likely the version you will get. It's easy to also purchase a Romancecar ticket from Hakone to Shinjuku while at Hakone Yumoto Station. Hope that helps. 🌺 Heidi

Hi. Car seats would only be necessary if riding in private cars. We only use car seats if one of our friends gives us a ride in their car. They are not required for buses, trains, or any of the other transportation included in the Hakone Free Pass. Have fun! 🌺 Heidi

We wanted to buy it the day before but the lady helping us convinced us to wait, since we weren’t sure what time train we wanted to book. It’s possible it could get fully booked, but probably only during a really busy time of year.

Thank you for your very informative videos. We are planning a trip to Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakone the first week of July ‘24. Could you tell me if it is easier to travel by Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hakone and then on to Kyoto, or would it be more efficient to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto and then to Hakone. Whichever itinerary we choose we will need to end up back in Tokyo where we are flying out of Haneda airport. Thank you and truly your videos have been a lifesaver as we are planning this trip.

Hi. If you'd like to take a Shinkansen from Tokyo Station heading towards Hakone, you can ride the Shinkansen to Odawara Station. From Odawara Station you can switch to a local train to get the rest of the way to Hakone-Yumoto Station. This will be faster, but also more expensive, than riding the Romancecar Limited Express train from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. After you are done visiting Hakone, you can back track to Odawara Station. From Odawara Station you can board a Shinkansen to Kyoto. Will you be using a JR Pass or purchasing individual tickets?

Aloha, LOVE your videos! We start our vacation in Hakone. Our flight arrives 5:10 pm and we’ll be there for 5 days total. The first “day” will be spent getting to our studio across from Lake Ashi, day 2 we’ll explore the Lake Ashi area and for the final 3 days we’ll use the 3-day FreePass to follow your loop. A couple questions; Do the buses run into the evening? I want to skip Shinjuku station and find a bus that goes straight from HND to Hakone but the only ones I can find online are at 5:30 and 7:45pm. I think 5:30 is cutting it too close, so the 7:45 should find us in Hakone around 10pm? We’ll need to transfer from wherever the bus drops us. I’m nervous about winging it but will be ok if there are buses we can hop on that late (This also falls on a Saturday). Also, if we purchase the FreePass on Klook but are skipping Shinjuku station, where do we redeem the passes? Any info helps, Mahalo

Aloha! It does take around 2 hours to get from Haneda to Hakone-Yumoto Station. Once at Hakone-Yumoto Station you could catch a taxi. I wouldn't expect there to be buses running at 10pm in Hakone. Things close early there. If you want the Hakone Free Pass that doesn't include round trip from Shinjuku Station, I don't recommend purchasing on Klook. Instead, you can purchase the version of the pass that only includes the Hakone area. You can buy it at either Gora Station or Hakone-Yumoto Station. For a day trip, leaving Shinjuku around 9am would be good. Unless you have a digital Hakone Free Pass, I recommend picking up your pass at least a day ahead, so you can get an early start. 🌺 Heidi

I’m confused if we should take the Hakone free pass or do the bus tour to Kawaguchiko. We intend to make it a day trip just to get to see Mt.Fuji and get some pictures. Gosh so confused. Hi. Kawaguchiko is closer to Mt. Fuji and you have a better chance of getting an unobstructed view of Mt. Fuji. From Hakone you can sometimes see Mt. Fuji in the distance, but only if the sky is clear enough. So a day trip to Kawaguchiko would probably be the better option.

Fantastic video and you deserve your commissions from the links that I will remember to use. Just one question regarding upgrading to the Romance Car Express from Shinjuku. I plan to go on a 3 day, 2 night trip to Hakone. If I upgrade, will I get 2 tickets--one ticket for the regular trip price plus a second ticket for the Romance Car Express? How do I insert 2 tickets into the entry machine at the Shinjuku station, if they come separately? My second question is whether the upgrade is good for one way or round trip? Because after Hakone, I'm actually going to Machida to attend a relative's wedding before returning to Shinjuku 2 days later.

Hi. You can purchase the Romancecar upgrade (technically called "Limited Express Surcharge") for one direction Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto for 1,200 Yen. If the Hakone Free Pass you receive is the size and shape of a train ticket, you can insert it into the automatic ticket gate as your Base Fare. That may be all you need to insert, and just hold onto the Limited Express Surcharge ticket. If you do need to insert them both, you can stack them together and insert into the automatic ticket gate. Hello! I'll be heading from Odawara to Gora followed by rope way to Togendai. Am I allowed to carry one bagpack and a hand held duffle bag on this route? Hi, We are not sure about luggage restrictions. There could possibly be for the ropeway. We each carried daypack backpacks with us. You might want to ask the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center to double check. The other consideration is that the buses and cable car can be very crowed, standing room only. The route we recommend is Hakone Yumoto Station > Hakone Tozan Bus to Moto Hakone-ko to visit the shrine and torii. Then take the cruise one way to Togendai. Then you will take the ropeway and cable car to Gora. Once in Gora you can take a bus to Gotemba. That's as far towards Mt Fuji as you can get with the Hakone Free Pass. Unless you have other transportation arranged from Lake Ashi? And yes, this is all doable in a day to get you to Mt. Fuji station.

Hi. The train that is included in the Hakone Free Pass that does not cost extra is a regular local train, not a Limited Express train. There are no reserved seats on the regular local train, which takes 120 minutes from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. Hi. You can purchase them the day of your travels, but the line can be very long at the Odakyu Sightseeing Services Center at Shinjuku Station, so you might wait an hour or more in line. If you have time to purchase them at least the day before it will allow you to get an earlier start to head to Hakone.

Hi. You will want a 3-Day Hakone Free Pass, if you plan to use it to get from Shinjuku to Hakone on March 1st and from Hakone to Shinjuku on March 3. Each day counts as a day, no matter what time you start using it. The 3-day pass is only slightly more expensive than the 2-day pass. If you are planning to purchase or pick-up the Hakone Free Pass in person at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shinjuku Station, it's best to do it at least a day in advance. Otherwise your start time will be delayed, as you could be waiting in line for an hour. Yes, it's round trip Shinjuku - Hakone-Yumoto. So as long as your Hakone Free Pass is still valid, the return trip to Shinjuku is included. Romancecar tickets are available for purchase online from Odakyu. However, you only want to pay for the "Limited Express Surcharge" of 1,200 Yen, not the regular base fare of 1,270 Yen (since that is already covered by the Free Pass). Hi. Thanks! You could take a Shinkansen from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station to Odawara. That option is faster (about half an hour), but more expensive at around 3,280 Yen. Personally, if I had an active JR Pass, I would take a Shinkansen to Odawara Station. But otherwise, I would use the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku and upgrade to the Romancecar for Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto (80 minutes). Hi. When we went to Hakone and stayed in an Airbnb we purchased the version of the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku (and also paid to upgrade to the Romancecar). It was fine that we only used Shinjuku to Hakone one-way and not round trip. If you want, you could purchase the version of the pass that only includes Hakone and separately buy tickets from Shinjuku to Hakone, but I'm not sure that would save any money and it might be more hassle. 🌺 Heidi

Hi. To go directly from Hakone-Yumoto to the sightseeing boat, it's either taking the bus or train + bus. If you are referring to public transportation included in the Hakone Free Pass. (If you have your own car you could drive.) You could travel counter clockwise on the loop, but that would involve riding the train, cable car, and ropeway before arriving at Lake Ashi. 🌺 Heidi

Hi. If you don't want to ride the bus, you can take the Hakone Tozan Train from Hakone-Yumoto Station to Gora Station. Then take the cable car. Then the ropeway. Then the sightseeing ship across lake Ashi. Then repeat everything in reverse: sightseeing ship, ropeway, cable car, Hakone Tozan Train (which zig zags back and forth down the hill). Just make sure you note what time things like the ropeway close, so you get back in time. 🌸 Heidi

I would start by comparing accommodations to see whether you’d rather sleep near Mt Fuji or in Hakone. The sightseeing loop in Hakone can be completed in one day. What do you plan to do at Fuji?

How do I sync the ticket timings? Do I have to select the train timings for when purchasing the hakone pass? I tried navigating to limited express (romance car) and I saw I can choose train time/carriage etc. does purchasing hakone pass also require me to choose the train time from Shinjuku to hakone?

Hi, if you are taking the shinkansen from Nagoya then you can change at Odawara Station and take a local train ( Odakyu line ) to Matsuda. Then take another train from Matsuda to Gotemba Station. From Gotemba take the bus to Kanadoriikoen-mae, which is a short distance to FujiYoshida. Now, to get from FujiYoshida to Hakone, take the same bus back to Gotemba. Then from Gotemba take another bus to Hakone. You can get off at places such as Gora ( where you can take the cable car ) or go all the way to Hakone Yumoto. Just make sure you purchase your Hakone Free Pass in advance if you plan to use the cable car and ropeways. I hope this helps! Just don't leave too late in the day as they might not have buses in the evening time. Good luck! Sounds like a great adventure.

Is it possible to do the Hakone Loop in one day including transportation from Tokyo in the morning and be able to get to the ryokan by about 4 pm for check-in? One of crazy thing about their online ticketing is how taxing to buy multiple tickets for your family group, they were assuming each individual hold a smartphone and capable to purchase hakone freepass with their credit cards, and the only workaround to do so is a person buy the ticket multiple time and transfer it individually to registered smartphone, what a hassle!

Hi. If you buy the Hakone Free Pass with round trip from Shinjuku, you can ride it all the way to Hakone-Yumoto Station. You do not need to get off at Odawara. If you purchase the Hakone Free Pass voucher on Klook, you need to pick up the actual physical pass at the Odakyu Sightseeing Visitors Center at Shinjuku Station. I have one more question that I hope you can help me with🙂 My plan is to go to Odawara station with the Shinkansen, since I never have travelled with that type of train before. Then go to Motohakone, and do the Hakone loop from there. But I struggle a bit to understand if both the direct bus from Odawara to Motohakone, and the alternative route, with train from Odawara station to Hakone Yumoto station, and then bus from there to Motohakone, is include in the Hakone free pass?

Hi. There are two version of the Hakone Free Pass. One version includes round trip Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. However, I think you need to pick up that pass at Shinjuku Station. The other version only includes transportation within the Hakone area. That might be a better option, as you can purchase it a Hakone-Yumoto station when you arrive. You would need to purchase a separate train ticket to return to Shinjuku, which is easy to purchase at Hakone-Yumoto Station. If you have a chance, I highly recommend visiting The Hakone Open Air Museum, located near Gora. Since you are starting from Gora, you could do the sightseeing loop backwards from the way I described in this video. So start by taking the cable car up the hill, then the ropeway to Owakudani and Lake Ashi, then cross Lake Ashi on the Pirate Ship. Then you could take a bus to Hakone-Yumoto Station, where you would catch a train to Shinjuku.

Hi. No, the Romancecar is not included in the JR Pass. It is part of Odakyu Railway, which is not part of the JR Group. To go specifically from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, the best option is the Hakone Free Pass. If you want to get as close as you can to Hakone using the JR Pass, you can take the Tokaido Shinkansen line (from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station) to Odawara Station. That is as close as you can get to Hakone using JR trains. I recommend getting a Hakone Free Pass once at Odawara Station that includes just the Hakone area starting from Odwara Station. It will allow you to sightsee using local transportation such as buses, trains, sightseeing boat, rope way, and cable car. None of these local forms of transportation are JR, so they are not covered by the JR Pass. I hope that helps clarify. Yes, you can complete the Hakone sightseeing loop in one day if you start early in the morning. Train to Hakone-Yumoto, bus to Lake Ashi, sightseeing Pirate ship across the lake, ropeway to Owakudani volcanic valley, cable car down to Gora Station, train back to Hakone-Yumoto and return on evening train to Shinjuku. It would be a full day! 🌺 Heidi

Seat availability depends upon whether it's a busy time of year. We picked up our Hakone Free Pass and upgraded to the Romancecar at the Odakyu Sightseeing Services Center at Shinjuku Station on the day of our trip. We waited in line for at least an hour. I'd advise doing it the day before, if you plan to head to Hakone early in the morning. Yes. And you could probably purchase both on Dec 15 if you know what time you want to depart on Dec 17. The only worry is if the train were to get fully booked. So some people are purchasing the surcharge in advance online.
