I went to the Half Century of Progress near Rantoul, Illinois and had a great time. Here's some footage of the tillage demonstrations that went on during the show, even some non-Oliver stuff.

The info on the side said that the 2 tractors were bought at the same time and made into this tandem unit by the farmer that ordered them. It was used for years, eventually parked, and the son recently got it going again. A very impressive job on the tandem hitch. A single hydraulic cylinder worked the clutch and the front tractor.

Of all the progress shows I’ve watch in last few years it was nice to see a Versatile in a vid. It’s usually the JDs & IH gang with a sprinkling of Olivers, Case, AC & maybe a MM once in a while. Some really nice and unique tractors in this vid. There’s no doubt when a DD is running. Lol Take care & stay safe. Cheers

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 2 жыл бұрын
My friends that went with me agree 100% and are already trying to figure out how to get him there in 2023. They say the flex back plow needs to go too, but even reduced to 8 bottoms, that is some tough ground. I think Herman might do a lot of tire tillage trying to do that one.

@@nellsonstout7001 the problem there is a 4 or a 5 needs to be in furrow for the line of draft to be set right. I've got a 6 bottom pull type that is on land. Maybe if I kept it a little shallow....

Those tandems are pretty awesome! A fair amount of good horsepower-plow matches and some with one bottom too many by the wheel slip…
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 2 жыл бұрын
It is some tough pulling ground, plus they had disced it a couple times before plowing, so the top couple inches were loose.

The ground there must be extra heavy, because some were having a hard time on a small plow.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely tough ground. It's probably even worse because of how much it gets worked during this show. After plowing they'll disc it a couple times, and go over it with a packer to firm it up so thry can plow it again the next day. It's definitely a show worth going to.

Great vidoes Chris, 2 questions, those double tractors are they for when a lot of HP is needed but dont have the big iron? Also I dont see much plowing being done due to no till, what would be a example of a crop needing plowing & no till wouldnt work?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 2 жыл бұрын
When the 880 was new, the only larger tractor Oliver offered was the 990. The race for horsepower was on by guys wanting to farm more acres without the extra labor, and 2 880s is more horsepower than 1 990, plus the double setup would have more traction. As to the tillage question, there are produce crops that just don't work well without plowing of some kind. Potatoes come to mind, possibly carrots.
