The Half Life series is like a really good fanfiction. you know the one, that you get really invested in until you realize that it says "unfinished" and hasn't been updated since 2009
@BIadelores
@BIadelores 7 жыл бұрын
And not just the one that hasn't been updated since 2009, the kind where the writer continues to show up freely around and constantly updates his previous or newer stories called "Team Fortress 2", "Counter Strike Global Offensive" and "Dota 2" while every time someone asks him about Half Life they simply say that they have a plan and they'll post the follow up "soon".

I never got what was the hype over Half-Life until I watched a colleague, who generally hates FPS games, play it. Now, I still don't get what the hype is, but I have watched someone start off going 'God, I hate FPS games' and then become an avid fan of HL in the span of about fifteen minutes, so I kind of have to accept that it's either a good game or literally enchanted with dark sorcery.
@juliettami77
@juliettami77 5 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about the first game, it's a supremely well-paced FPS game with simple controls that never change but nonetheless work perfectly well for the three different modes that it goes into (survival horror, tactical action and crazy bouncy rocket-jumping action) along with a deep and engaging storyline that nevertheless doesn't interfere with the action.

richard1701able I will miss him too... That's why I will join him by also being critical of Valve: Valve needs to seriously make up their mind about whether their making Half Life 3 or not. I get that they may not want to work on it considering they're so preoccupied with steam and just want to sell used games from now on. But if thats the case then they should just simple flat out tell fans no Half Life 3 instead of being so mysterious about it. It would be kinder then leaving them in a state of suspense for decades.

Rock Steel I've been in the Program for a long time and I look forward to meeting you. It's pretty safe here, the Fanboys haven't found me yet. I would be very surprised if Valve made HL3, they are too busy making money off other people's hard work with Steam, and DOTA or LOL. Which ever one is theirs. Valve making HL3 is as likely as Square remaking Final Fantasy 7. They haven't ruled it out, but they've made no commitment to making it. I didn't like the HL series because (My my opinion) they didn't know what they wanted to be. HL1 was either a survival horror or a fps. HL2 was either a fps or a 3D puzzle game. At least Portal knew what it was and wasn't jumping genres. Yahtzee addressed this (In part) and that's why I respect him as a critic.

richard1701able To be fair I can think of one good reason as to why Valve would make half life 3. The Steam Machine, look it up Valve is pretty much trying to make and ship their own console and by the looks of it they are taking a big risk. Declaring Half Life 3 a steam machine exclusive would greatly boost sales the same way Halo being an X-Box exclusive boosted its sales. My one question is does Valve even have any game designers left in its employment? I wouldn't think so since its been so long since they actually made a game themselves and have focused on steam for so long that their game designers would laid off and replaced with web software people.

Theory; HL3 has been made and is just sitting on a HD somewhere. Steam keeps it locked up till the day their stocks drop and the outlook of the company is becoming grim then BAM. HL3 is brought out, updated to whatever is the current engine, hd textures and whatnot and is put on steam for 59.99 plus DLCs for 20$ each. To which least half the Steam community instantly buys regardless of reviews just to finish the fucking story.

There's a reason they won't make another HL game, it's because over the years the hype has grown to the point where people only expect the best game in the history of forever, Valve knows the next Half life won't live up to the hype.

@@filthyshoggoth have you played Alyx? the whole game is basically a retcon of a story in order to advertise for a half life 3
@filthyshoggoth
@filthyshoggoth 3 жыл бұрын
@@seberrino8506 No, I won't buy a VR setup until it's justified. One faux AAA game isn't selling me on VR when 80% of VR games aren't even actual games but demos and minigames. (Alyx is the only game I feel comfortable criticizing on watching a playthrough instead of playing it, again, price of entry is way too high for me, as I said, I'm criticizing the game as a HL game, and the retcon didn't leave me feeling anything but meh.) Don't get me wrong, I was super hyped for HL3 after I completed the Orange Box. Eli Vance has a better chance of being alive than Valve does of making a good game in HL3. To be fully honest, Valve has always kind of been a bullshit developer after HL 1 came out; most of their latter games only exist because they bought out mod/addons makers. Sure, the optics are that they buy and help smaller devs, but the reality is that every Valve game since 2005 besides the episodes and Alyx/Artefact are derived from Half Life mods. The idea that Valve innovates is hilarious, they're the Apple of gaming. Then there's the math involved: Valve has a clear vested interest in selling VR units, and almost none in a massive cost risk required for HL3. It's been nearly 17 years...would you gamble 50 million or so dollars to bet that gaming's biggest hype train won't derail? If you have to retcon a story that doesn't actually have all that much story to begin with, then you better do it better, and Alyx did not. It definitely gave me the opposite impression it gave you. It only made me hope they finally let it die.

It's not perfect, but the thing I love about half-life 2 is just how god damn fun it is. Firing razor blades with the gravity gun, rocketing down giant insect aliens, forging an army of antlions... Half-Life 1 is definitely superior (by quite large margin), but Half-Life 2 has still aged better than any other 2004 shooter.

@@jamesoleary2476 i've never heard anyone say something so stupid in my entire life. First of, graphics aren't important (at least not for me. Art style however, is something I find much more important). Secondly, the characters are bland. They have boring dialogue and but more importantly, they don't feel like real people. Like, why are they so god damn cheerful while they are literally living under a 1984 style dictator ship, they can't breed so the human race will go extinct and they aware of the fact that they are last humans toever trade earth. The earth is also completely fucked, most of its water has been drained, you and do walk on the bottom of the ocean. Third of all, they combine doesn't seem like scary threat despite all of the before mentioned atrocious act that have succeeded in doing. If they are so strong and truly have everything under tight surveillance, than how come still walk around and painting god damn lamda symbols everywhere? Also like he said in the video, people shouldn't know about Freeman's acts. And while intro to the combine is kinda alright, you still don't experience enough of it for them as real dictator ship, in 1984 it's only at the end the mc even meets the rebellion, Ingsoc made difficult to ensemble, or rather, they made it near impossible. And my forth and final point, god damn the gameplay sucks. The combat is boring because the enemies have terrible ai and the shooting feels unresponsive, you alao don't get enough unique and interesting weaponry. Most of the physics puzzles sucks and the wholengame seems like one big tech demo.

The ladders aren't even just bad mechanically. They're also almost always the same color as the wall not matter what color the wall is & usually in a corner. It's like the goal was to make the ladders hard to find. I rarely had that problem because the level design usually lead me to them but everyone else I watched play it spent a lot of time trying to figure out where the ladders were.

Half-Life 2 feels huge. Other games are bigger in content and maps, but this one really feels like an odyssey. It doesn't feel like you're in command of a big fish in a small pond like all of those FPS that USsies teens enjoy so much, but rather a small fish heading through the ocean, like any other regular person in a pre-smartphone era would feel in Gordon Freeman's shoes. That's why players feel so invested (in fact that's one of the things you love Dark Souls for). And since proportions are colossal, the feeling is legit (much more at least than any other FPS a.k.a. average-teenager-power-fantasy). It's not a bad thing to make the setting as proportional as the adventure (that being one of the things that defines an epic), instead of a series of streamlined corridors with varying degrees of textures (the exception being Rapture and a few more, of course), like the industry has been doing massively since they can't understand why Half-Life 2 still works, it seems. Or probably because they revere it so much they don't have the guts to try to best it, which could be understandable if game prices were half as what they usually ask for.

Everyone says "you should have played HL2 when it first came out" when people say it's overrated but to be honest I played HL2 about a year ago and it is my favorite FPS still. I just love how the world is so interactive and thus alive. A feeling that you don't really get these days. The world looks pretty yes, but that's it. All I can do is watching the world. The only game I remember that had this much interactivity was the first Crysis and Warhead. You could grab and throw things. Objects and dead bodies would move when you touched or walked over them instead of being intangible ragdolls.

Frankly I don't think they'll ever release Half life 3. No point, I guess. Steam is making them more money than HL3 ever could. My theory is that they almost finished it many years ago, but by this point rivals already released several FPSs who were at least as good as what they had in mind. Who would be their target audience? I bet half the people who played the original Half life games don't even play video games any more. Releasing it would only guarantee that it'll fail. Might as well reboot the franchise and reset the count.

The Solmanian I`m 18 years old, startet playing Half-Life 1 a couple of months ago and it`s by far one of the best FPS games I have ever played. Jonas Kristiansen It was one of the best FPSs of it's time, I'm not arguing it. But today, it's a lot more competitive. It's nice to see some of the younger generation interested in oldies; but let's face it: people have an aversion to sequels. Today developers want every game in a series to be a stand alone entry point. Playing more than a decade old games, shouldn't be an entry requisite. Even when developers do make sequels, they remove the numerical. Bioware refuses to call "Dragon age: Inquisition" DA3, and rage when anyone refers to the next Mass effect game as "Mass effect 4", despite the previous games being called ME, ME2 and ME3, and not providing any alternate name... It's ironic that Bioware is also the company that made the best solution to this problem by "giving away" the previous games for anyone who buys the sequels.

likeajon And? With the nature of steam, IF HL3 would be released, than sales to the kind of what you mentioned would likely occur. The question is, why would they release HL3, when their are much more lucrative avenues to pursue. Mainly, establishing a trucking company to move all the ridiculous money that Steam is making for them. They could develop a game, and publish it, and it might even be successful. But it's much better to let multiple developers make games, and take their cut when they release it through Steam.

***** bioshock is, gameplay wise, not as good as hl2 or as a shooter in general. in bioshock 1 the stongest weapon was by far the wrench and infinites gameplay wasnt very good either, all they had was the story (and infinites story falls apart pretty quickly if you investigate the time travel mechanic as its poorly implemented, more focused on making shocking reveals than consistency or logic). Singularity has similiar problems, metro last light has extreme problems in terms of gameflow (play it again and ask yourself how much you are actually playing in the first hour), in half life you could at least jump on tables when you arent interested in the story and just wanted to play. also, its more of a stealth shooter and not enjoyable without ranger mode, at least in my opinion. Dishonored is not really a fps, and has a lot of its own problems. Never played the darkness so im not sure how it fares. i will, however, concede that wolfenstein was better in its core gameplay (if lacking something like the gravity gun), but the execution was not that good, as the akimbo feature was useless due to lacking ammo, some rather extreme cases of artificial stupidity from the ai (at least at release, not sure if they fixed it, not interested to pla it again to check), and the story had ups and downs (ever realized that everyone treats you like the errand boy even though you fight all battles alone, and win them?). and no, i played half life 2 for the first time around the time infinite got released, so no real nostalgia here.

I didn't play half-life 2 when it came out. Actually, I didn't play it until...I think 2013, haha. I will say, I definitely enjoyed the game. I wouldn't call it the best game out there, or the best shooter out there. It did, however, keep my interest throughout the whole thing. I never really liked the gravity gun either. Don't get me wrong, really cool idea and it works really well. I just think it was never as useful as everything else you got (well, maybe its a bit more useful than the crowbar...then again...uh maybe they are about the same in usefulness.) It was just very gimmicky. Story is obviously nothing really to care about, at least for me. For some reason, none of the characters feel like they actually have any character. I don't know why that is for me though, maybe because the player character feels so detached and unrelated to them most of the time. Like, yeah they knew each other from black mesa, but even in the first game none of the characters except G-Man catches your interest. Actually I think that is the same here in HL2 as well for me. I cared more about the G-Man than anyone else in the story. Everyone else might as well not even be there for me. The cutscenes bored me to death for the most apart, again except for when G-Man was involved. Even though all the levels are a bit linear, I always felt like I was going somewhere and that I was in a huge world, even though really it was pretty much a big room, then a corridor leading to another big room, with sometimes a physics puzzle or two to solve. Overall, I think it is a fun game, and obviously very important when looking at how it shaped the gaming industry. Honestly though, I think the only thing that really will hold up is the gameplay, like in Half-Life 1. That is, until some innovation occurs that makes the current methods of controlling games look clumsy and obsolete, like with old shooters on the PC and N64 with their less than ideal (at least by our standards now) controls.

***** So you're using the word 'modern' to describe a period of time that featured shooters that you don't like? I didn't start properly playing FPSs until the early 2000s, but I have played a sizeable amount from before that, afterwards(I doubt You've even heard of Exhumed, which I'm recently playing). I'm aware of what constitutes a good shooter. Half Life 2 doesn't necessarily have great shooting mechanics. What makes it so great, is that it plays out like an adventure game, and not just a shooter. What you do in each level changes frequently. You are not just running and gunning for the duration of the whole game. That's something that distinguished the Half Life series from previous FPSs that existed. That and its subtle storytelling were ground breaking things.

I`m not saying Doom is a bad game but it`s difficult to copy Half-Life because it set the standard. Are you saying that modern FPS games in general are shitty or that there are good ones but Half-Life isn`t one of them? In both cases you`re wrong. Games are more than just point and shoot, they`re an experience..an experience ( atmosphere, story-telling, graphics, voice acting, high definition surround sound, epic scripted events) Doom just can`t deliver. Gameplay yes but everythign else... no. If I want an experience I will remember for years to come I go with games like Half-Life, Bioshock or The Last of Us, not Doom, Shadow Warrior or Duke Nukem 3D

"None of the actually saw him blow up the alien leader." What about the vortigaunts? I always assumed that people deified Freeman because what they heard from them.

Actually, the "2" in half-life 2 is in superscript, so it would be a quarter life, not a whole like (.5X.5=.25)

I guess many people look at the tutorials because if you look at a ladder then hit "e" you attach to it. You detach to close ground from it if you hit "e" again.

It has been 8 years since episode 2 came out and we are still no closer to a release date than we were back then.

I've watched 10 of these and this is the only of the games I've played. This guy's hilarious regardless and on point about Half Life.

i don't know how many times i've played through half-life 2, honestly its one of the rarest gaming experiences you'll get. mods just made me play it even longer, a lot of creative stuff came out thanks to this game, you gotta give it credit for that.
