I like how they start off with the visual inspiration for black mesa. If you watched the previous no clip documentary, you will know why this hits different.

Also, love how they brought back the dude from noclip. that's awesome when you think about the fact that noclip's doc started with "valve didn't even bother getting back to us"

I thought it was going to have any hint whatsoever, however small, of a future project. The closest was gabe saying he doesn't look back.
@Nacil_548 ай бұрын
Yes, Gabe saying he doesn't look back could be a hint, as they still did an anniversary update on their oldest game, but there's also "Late is just for a little while, suck is forever" which can technically be considered Valve's motto.

It’s insane that Romero might have been the reason Half Life happened

Why is that "insane"?

My favourite part of Valve lore in this was the company in-joke behind the microwave gag being the genesis of Valve's soup menu today.

Just finished watching. It's funny re-watching it with Tyler and realizing that we paused at many of the same points to geek out! I'm grateful for this documentary, because it showed that as amazing as the game itself was, the people behind it are the giants whose backs the industry stands upon today.

Those early discs need to be submitted to the Internet Archive.

1:13:30 - Funny to hear it from him. Around 10-15 years ago I remember being attacked on some forums for daring to suggest that Valve had no idea who G-man really was, didn't know his origin story and origin details about alien civilizations etc. They thought I was ridiculous implying Valve would be coming up with answers on the go and it's not all sitting fully explained in their drawers, waiting for future games to be told. Even Tolkien had no idea the ring would be a huge deal when he was writing the Hobbit and he is often used as an example of the masterful world building with everything planned ahead. To be honest I don't like this common method for mystery writing that you don't need solid answers, just keep asking questions. This is why the LOST tv show broke down, despite creating amazing mystery at the beginning. Or why AoT was such an amazing success of storytelling, because it was so well planned from the beginning. Half-Life is great and the trick clearly worked here, but I have huge respect for writers who don't take this easy route of "secrets being better than answers" and put a ton of effort to have most of big answers actually written down.

I'm reading some stuff that I've known for years of my time playing HL, and some of these fixes I find it funny how they even thought to look in it, like: Improved satchel charge controls: primary fire now always throws a new satchel, and secondary fire always detonates Fixed some cases where the player could get stuck in place on level transitions. Fixed some cases where characters would interrupt important dialogue with their "greetings" dialogue. Fixed the flashlight HUD showing empty after loading a savegame. Fixed singleplayer weapons not auto-switching away when exhausted (grenades / snarks / satchels / etc) Like seriously, 25 years later and we got fixed like these? I mean they probably didn't had to yet they did. I'm happy to see this day come. .... Many did not live to see this, even as we speak lives are being taken away because of others who think they are in state of power. I don't want to get more into this. The HL news are good but the sadness in our hearts is bigger.

How did Valve could just continue the development when they left sierrra? Wouldnt Sierra want their money back?
@term-8276 ай бұрын
Well, firstly Sierra was not GT Interactive in terms of scummy publisher nonsense (Read: Blood 2) because Ken Williams was still at the company before they sold to CUC International. (Sierra is under the Activision umbrella nowadays) Ken was willing to give leeway to allow Valve to finish the game despite pulling funding, because the founders were ex Microsoft millionaires. But with Half-Life 2, Steam was already a thing which caused a rift with them and Valve and they split ways just as Steam took off which allowed valve to not only self publish but to be a publisher in themselves for the newly created digital distribution market, which would mark the beginning of Sierra's three year demise ending with Vivendi and Activision merging into Activision Blizzard.
