Nov. 9, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- Midway through Half Waif's Tiny Desk, singer Nandi Rose Plunkett stops to let us all know that this particular Half Waif show is extra special. "So today we're actually 'Full Waif,' because I am joined by my dear friends," she says. "These are all musicians who have played with the band Half Waif over the past five years, but we've never all played together until now! So thanks for the opportunity to get 'Full Waif' together."
The band, more often a trio, with Nandi singing her songs and playing keyboards, with Zack Levine on drums and Adan Carlo bass synth and guitar, put out their third album Lavender earlier in the year. The three intimate songs performed here, all from that album, are stripped to their essence. So when they closed with "Salt Candy," the line "I wanted to be carried in my mother's arms / I wanted to be buried in my mother's arms," in this setting and with the spare punctuation of electronic drums and textures, sitting alongside Nandi's voice, was particularly chilling.
I've always found a sense of solitude in Half Waif's music and their lead-off performance of "Lavender Burning," with its opening line, "Staring out into the shifting darkness / Tryin' to give a name to the place where my heart is," reinforces my love for their peaceful, almost backwoods calm.
Set List
"Lavender Burning"
"Silt"
"Salt Candy"

Well, i'm not fluent in english, but i'll try to pass the message. Okay: everytime i put half waif to play (like everyday at the morning and night) i feel something new in their songs. I really feel inspired listening to it. it's different, take me to a place within the forest that i love... and the feelings she talks about... i can feel it... even those i didn't pass... well, i feel blessed to know Half Waif, makes me believe that good music can exist in this world's dark moment. Obrigado!

Dear Nandi, I know you read the comments, I know you'll read this too. Thank you very much for your music, and for these songs. You were never held back by previous comments on a similar show about 'nice looks but not adding anything to (...)' and boy you are an inspiration and a beautiful musician and person.

"Just trying to fill this hole that once held my whole being" - wow. That hit me hard, my husband of 15 years and I are struggling to make things work right now and the uncertainty is killing me, he's staying somewhere else for the first time since we've been together all these years to give us some space. We love each other so much, but we want both of us to be happy and we think some space can help us make the changes we need to make for that to be a reality - but when he is not here that is exactly what I do. Try to fill this hole. She spoke for me in that line. Thank you.

Hey I hope all is good and that all will be good. I couldn't scroll past your comment without asking if you have told your husband that when he is gone it's like you are trying to fill a hole that is so significant within yourself. I'm a pretty thick skilled guy and I usually require people to tell me things straight up or to remind me of what I've got. Anyway hope you have a happy future:)

@@blujm5231 This is what I believe most guys to be like, whether they want to be or not. I know that I'm the same way, and it would absolutely floor me if my wife told me she felt that way. I really hope that everything works out for the two of you, Amanda. Love and marriage can be hard work sometimes, but if you're willing to put in the time, I'm confident you guys can conquer this together! Remember that it is the two of you against the problem, not the two of you against each other.

This is utterly incredible to me, and so unmistakably beautiful! It's both ambient and passionate. With moments of light and darkness. This is one of my most absolute favorite performances here! Rarely have I seen such a great mix of instruments, several very "affordable", and thought all the choices were justified and even liberating. To take the instruments and get whatever you give into them, and in turn the music in itself. Gorgeous vocals, love the percussion, and Bass sounds... Wow.
