This Aqara E1 Smart Home Zigbee 3.0 radiator thermostat can be installed in literally 30 seconds and is one of the cheapest you can buy, Tado has one of the Best Smart Radiator valves on the market but it's hard to ignore the price difference, question is which is better?
This video is sponsored by Aqara, all opinions are my own
Aqara's Zigbee TRV Smart Thermostatic Radiator Valve system works with Alexa, works with google, works with Apple Home kit, and most importantly works with Home Assistant directly using MQTT and ZHA, but also via the Apple Homekit integration.

Thank you very much for the review! I live in the US and have 8 radiators. I've been wanting something like this for a while now. Several years ago when we purchased this home we swapped the seized valves for new manual valves. Which helped out a lot at the time. With costs constantly increasing I've been thinking about converting them to TRV. Now with this as an option I believe this summer when the boiler is not running I have a new project 😁

Hello radiator person in the US. I’m about to become one, too, so I’m doing my rEsEaRcH. That’s when I happened on your comment. So far, I don’t see indication this came to the US market. Were you able to get your hands on it? If so, what’s your experience? Are they compatible? What’s your experience either with this or whatever other solution you may have gone for? I’ve never had radiators and this move is to a cold climate in a house I expect will have costlier utilities so any wisdom is greatly appreciated.

On a tech note, I haven't seen a radiator since I left the UK 20 years ago, these would have been really cool back in the day, now if only you could review some sort of smart forced air register device for those of us that live in the US, though I guess you'd need a US house to test it in! When moving house I inherited and then expanded a Netatmo Smart Thermostat and Radiator valve set up. Good concept bit in practice breaking all the time and sucking batteries dry (in days in some cases). Turning heating on in Autumn just became a stress. Yesterday, following good feedback from x2 family members, I bought the full Evohome set up - controller and radiator valves. Quite expensive, but I'm hoping high quality and with none of the Ne-shat-mo issues!

Got one of these and on the whole works really well, pairing it with the external temperature sensor does mean temperature control is much more accurate. Only thing that lets it down for me is the smart scheduling which is basic, no option for 5+2 for example and you can only three separate temperature options in the schedule itself

going to look into these because of the external sensors, we have water based under floor heating with an external distribitor, that way i can put sensors in the rooms, and the knobs in the technical room on the distribitor..... A small tip. I have set the Immersion for 30 minutes a day @ 6am (unless the bath automation triggers) and I always fill the kettle with hot water to save energy and speed boiling. I also fill the dishwasher with hot water when I am filling it immediately before a wash, makes a 15/25% difference in power usage per wash, since it has to warm water to 55c and then to 65c. I also use WiFi bulbs as tell-tales for the Immersion and heat, humidity, movement for my Tegu.

I was looking to add smart valves to my heating system to gain individual smart heating on a room-by-room basis. I moved into a house with the Hive smart thermostat but didn’t really want to tie myself further into this architecture by buying Hive valves. I’ve already bought into the Aqara line of products so ideally wanted to go this route. I anticipated that smart valves from third party manufactures wouldn’t talk to the Hive thermostat directly but was hoping that some smart integration through HomeKit would resolve this, sadly not and your video has confirmed the big drawback with these ‘Limiters’ as you have called them. The main problem occurs in this example: A request is made to heat a bedroom to 20˚c by the Aqara Valve. Main thermosta located in the living room is set at 21˚c now if the living room is already at 21˚c then the bedroom will not be able to achieve the desired temperature as the boiler is shut off. One option that has been suggested would be to set the temperature of the main thermostat to a higher value. However, the boiler would now run for the entire period of the schedule as the valve in the living room would have closed having reached it’s set temperature. Any cost savings would now be negated; indeed, it could end up costing more. Needless to say, I will be returning the Aqara Valve Thermostats until a more ‘joined up’ solution can be found. Ideally what is needed is to be able to turn off the Hive's thermostat functionality and simply use it as a switch to turn the boiler on/off triggered by the valves, but I don't think this is going to be on the cards anytime soon.

I know you said you don't want to tie into the hive more but I'm sure if you use hive TRVs you can do what you have stated here.
@leexgx

Can also use the aqara relay to command the boiler off and on (or just create a task to tell the nest to turn off and on) Note if your hive/nest is in your warmest location your thermostat is likely in the incorrect location (TRVs are heating limiters not heaters l, well unless you have remote control for boiler to turn on) I just got the whole lot now, m2 hub/relay for boiler control/a load of temperature sensors and 3 trvs (could do with 4 more but need to replace the valves under the trvs because they bounce when nearly shutting off (probably just replace 4 radiators with the fittings but that's probably cost more then the aqara gear I just got) amazon black Friday weekend discounts

I just installed the Tado kit on my combi boiler yesterday. When they say it's an "easy" job they don't take into consideration having to fix some of the existing wiring. Learning from your install I did as much cabling as I could BEFORE attaching the devices to the wall in the cupboard.

There's an elephant in the room here. If you have one 'main' system thermostat (in the living room for example) the whole house temperature is based on that room. So if you use a smart thermostat to turn off a radiator in a room upstairs, it will get cold, but will only heat up again (when scheduled to heat) when the living room cools enough to demand heat. In this scenario the living will heat up quickly, then turn off the call for heat, but the cold room upstairs will not have reached temperature and will have to wait for the next time the living room calls for heat, in the meantime cooling. If you leave a room too cold for too long, it can lead to damp, condensation issues etc. I had Meross thermostats and found this, do not use them now. A good move is to move your main system thermostat to the room you mainly live in, some are in hallways with front doors etc, so temp can fluctuate leading to many heat calls, uneven room temperatures and higher bills. Move your main system thermostat if needed.

Hi Paul, I would really like you to look into some technologies which are smart and suitable for flats or apartments, that are only electric. Such as IR radiators, these are possibly the most efficient, smart heating devices that you can have in an apartment or flat that has only electricity as it’s power source

I think, in case, you want some radiators with traditional valves, set to all open not to force on the boiler pump. I will keep my 2 bathrooms radiator valves full open for instance. I am no plumber, just some common sense :-) happy to have a plumber point of view though!

I love the idea of these TRVs, but with 16 radiators in the house, it all becomes very expensive. Also, with 2 kids, most rooms are occupied at some point. What I have found though is by using Aqara thermostats in each room, I can monitor and better balance the heating throughout the house, making it more comfortable. Unfortunately, one of them keeps going offline and needs bringing closer to the hub to reconnect; so much for a zigbee mesh!
@rosiehawtrey

Buy one of those zigbee usb boosters, should help.
@ingy23
@ingy23 Жыл бұрын
You need a hardwired zigbee device such as a light bulb or power plug and put it halfway between, battery powered devices can only be at the end of a mesh and can't relay other messages. Once you have done this you might also need to forget the thermostat and then rejoin it as some zigbee devices are sticky and won't rediscover the mesh other are fine and will happily move to better mesh nodes.

Fist off, huge fan of the channel! Aren’t these just doing the same job as a standard TRV but in a more aesthetically pleasing way? These won’t save you money on your heating bill if the boiler is still firing to the temperature on your room stat. I’ve got a Tado system (based on your review 😉) and already seeing the benefits of the boiler only firing when heat is needed per room. Whilst the initial cost is more expensive, it’s Tado all the way for me 😊

Morning dude! The boiler heat enough water to heat the radiators, the less radiators there are to heat the less energy is required at the boiler. The difference between these and the old school radiator thermostats is the scheduling via the app and the smart home functionality. My rooms are only heated in line with me and Neeshas daily schedule of where we are in the house throughout the week. Glad your tado system is working well for you man. Its definitely a more complete system! ❤️
