Halibut Fishing The Oregon Coast with Black Dogg Guide Service for a quick limit of Halibut and my first attempt at figuring out how to fillet a halibut. This was my first offshore fishing / deep sea fishing trip to target halibut. We almost didn't make this fishing trip due to a change in the weather last minute, but we did have a small window of time to hopefully make our trip out to the fishing grounds and hopefully each get our halibut on the boat and get back to land before things got too ugly. It was a fairly rough boat ride on the way out and at some point my stomach decided it had had enough... which made for an interesting morning of fishing considering the conditions didn't get any better when we reached the fishing grounds. Despite how i was feeling, i pushed through and ended up having a really fun time. In the end, we got our halibut on board and the day was a success. The may have not been the biggest halibut but i have to say, regardless of size, they always eat good.
I decided that i wanted to fillet my halibut myself since i have never filleted a halibut before. I watched a quick video and figured i had what i needed to not make a complete disaster out of this fillet job. As you can see in the video, one fish produces a lot of meat!
Boat Captain Gordy Webster with Black Dogg Guide Service is a friend of mine and i highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for fishing charters on the oregon coast. Not only does he always manage to find the fish, he is also very friendly and professional, not to mention how comfortable it is to be in a big boat like his. I will leave info below for Black Dogg Guide Service specializing in Salmon, Tuna, Bottomfish, Halibut, Sturgeon, and CRAB!!

Nick great job on filleting that halibut, my Vietnamese friend said he could feed a family of ( 7 ) with the meat that you left on the bone... I'm KIDDING you my friend. I think it was a SUCCESS for your first attempt. Also I'm sure that many people have told you that the smaller ones are the BEST eating. As per usual GREAT video. ;-)

Hey Nick, I personally have found Dramamine to work exceptionally well. Some people prefer to tough it out (f**k that -- feeling sick takes ALL of the fun out of the trip), and others say it makes them a bit drowsy. I'll take a bit drowsy over chunking any day. I think the stuff is awesome! As for smaller halibuts, I think they tend to be the best eating. Plus, they tend to have far fewer worms. Damn they are good! And to your viewers who are unfamiliar with halibut, keep your fingers away from their mouths when removing the hook; those jaws clamp down like a vise!!

Take one Dramamine just before bed the night before and one first thing in the morning with breakfast and you’ll be good as gold.

I learned my lesson recently. I’m can do ok on the water, but I should use Dramamine as a precaution cause jigging and feeling sick sucks. And don’t sleep on the cheek meat!

One tip for not getting sick is stay away from coffee or any caffeine and bring lots of snacks eating is very important

What, no footage of you over the rail chumming with that morning's breakfast? Haha, I've sailed my boat across oceans but I still get queasy when I go crabbing in the rough stuff. Too much time looking into the boat baiting pots. If you just stare at the horizon you'll never get sick but that's difficult when fishing or on dark nights. Thanks again for the great content.

That’s a tough trip, been out of Tillamook many times on a 24’ GlasPly and out of Newport twice with charters. Easier to focus on not throwing up when you get a fish on, but you had some ugly rollers. Good job, fun day 👍😎

We knew it was gonna be rough but I’d be ok with going out in whatever Gordy thinks his boat and himself can handle. Puking is an inconvenience but luckily it didn’t bother me lol the fishing is too fun to let an upset stomach stop you….. puke 🤮 drink water and fish on

The biggest Halibut I ever caught was 51 pounds. Off Anacapa Islands off shore of Ventura California. It took me 35 minutes to reel it in. I had enough steaks for 6 months, even after giving some steaks away. Nick going Nick. Good tasting fish for sure.

Guys, I'm thinking of getting some felt-soled wading boots for jetty fishing. Slipping is way too dangerous. I was looking at Korkers. Any input? Korkers vs Caddis? Plain felt soles vs studded felt soles?

Go to goodwill and stores like that and buy a cheap pair of old wader boots for 10 bucks. No need to buy a nice pair to ruin on the jetty

Hey Nick or anyone reading this and plan to fish the ocean, next time try this. Take one seasick pill the night before you sleep and one in the morning before you go out. I use the chewable pills bought at Walmart.

Actually, the smaller 'buts are better eating. Cut my teeth on the Columbia Bar as a teen, fishing out of Ilwaco, and as an adult, longlined 'buts in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska.
