My hometown was where the first Halloweentown was filmed (and some scenes of Twilight as well). They have embraced the nostalgia for the film and every year, they hold a Halloweentown celebration, with lighting the giant pumpkin (it was originally the prop from the movie, but it was replaced with a metal one eventually). They invite the actors for meets and greets, and dress up the town a little. Not to the same level as the actual movie, but maybe someday! They also have Benny's cab too. Its really fun to see the love of this movie still thrive so many years later. It was fun when I moved there as a kid and saw all the locations in one of my favorite D-Coms in the flesh. Saw a bunch of movies in that theater too.

Seeing this movie at my grandmother's house only helped to feed my childhood Halloween obsession. I even wrote a story set in Halloweentown when I was 9 for a school writing project!

While I love Halloweentown, I personally find its sequel, Halloweentown 2, to be the best of the series. I feel like that one decided to kick things up, get a little darker and increase the stakes. The production on it looks really good for a TV movie, like the creature costumes are better than the first (then again it doesn't have as many creatures to show off til act 3, so they could afford to give them the time and money to look good and spooky). Plus, it's the movie that introduced Kimberly J. Brown to her future husband, which is a huge plus

Halloweentown was the definition of "Remember when Disney Channel Original Movies weren't mostly dumb musicals?". Sure, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows back then for DCOMs... but Halloweentown was that one special movie you could put on during Halloween and not cringe through it.

Hades IS the name of the god, but eventually his name did become synonymous with the general Greek underworld. Tartarus is actually similar in that way, being the name of a primordial diety AND the deepest abyss where the Olympian gods put their enemies, like most of the Titans, and people who they wanted to severely punish, like Tantalus and Sisyphus.

Tartarus is only one part of it (the worst part, where the most notorious of sinners would go to receive their punishment, and where the Titans were sent after the Titanomachy). Most humans would be sent to the Asphodel Meadows (unless they were heros or said notorious sinners).

I absolutely loved the Halloween Town movies as a kid! If I saw them on TV around this time of year, I had to drop everything and watch. Oh, and goodness!! Allison, those overalls are SO cute, and they look GREAT on you!

Really like the back to back reviews you guys are putting out on nostalgic horror movies for all ages. Especially this time capsule of old school Disney Channel Original Movies that may or may not have inspired The Owl House.

I like to believe that Halloweentown was where all the monsters went at the end of Nightbreed, when Midean fell. So its family friendly Clive Barker.

I’m so happy you gave this a positive review. Yeah, I mean, sure, some of the costumes and set designs might not be high quality, but it's a Disney Channel movie from the 2000s. It's not gonna have the same production values as say, The Last of Us. I'm really glad you kept that perspective, unlike some other reviewers. Even Phelan, who doesn't see it through the same rose-tinted glasses, admits to enjoying it for what it is. This is why you guys are my favorite reviewers.

I remember when I was a kid I had seen The Nightmare Before Christmas and then watched this and was really confused about why Jack Skellington wasn't in this. From my perspective the production values really took a step down between the two.

I grew up near where they filmed this. They have a big gathering every year to celebrate the movie. I also grew up with it in general and I do have fond memories of it. This is so good. My late daughter and i would watch this and hocus pocus. Everyone loves on hocus pocus but this film is even better for campy fun times imo 😂. Love this. However yes they explained the bus a lot more in the sequels. I love the things you brought up that i didnt even know having watched this probably 10+ times. 😅

I remember, it’s either this movie or a movie with a similar plot that burned a scene in my mind. At one point a character in the real world (at some kind of amusement park) is shown becoming one with their mask and the movie plays it like the person is suffocating. Terrifying to child me.

Whoa! Not some SG1 references all of a sudden! I think I was at an age when this came out I would've thought watching any Disney Channel movie was too weenie. Shame. I probably would've loved it and have found nostalgia for it now like you.

They aren't necessarily ''must rewatch every October'' favorites like Hocus Pocus or The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I do have a lot of nostalgic fondness for the first 2 Halloweentown movies. Probably the only Disney Channel Original movies that I've ever genuinely loved.

I live 5 minutes from where they filmed all the downtown scenes - they decorate it like they did in the movie in October.

To this day, I curse Disney for not giving a “Halloweentown” versus “Hocus Pocus” crossover. Some of us wanted to see Grandma Aggie and Winifred fight for Halloweentown supremacy 🙄 I wish they’d reboot it animation-style so they could show way more Halloweentown and magical effects

I was too old (early 20s) for this movie when it came out and so don’t have the childhood nostalgia attached to it. I can certainly see how, had I been younger at the time, feeling that way about it though.

the separate worlds is explored better in the second film. they barely mention it in the first film. but the portal is only open on halloween. they usually take the bus through but witches can just summon a door portal themselves. eventually the door portals can be summoned anytime which is monsters and witches are going to high school in the third one i think. been awhlie since i've seen the last 2 films.
