Teardown, mini mod and overview of the Halo 4 limited edition wireless controller for Xbox 360. I take a closer look at its special features, disassemble it and replace the stock thumbsticks with an alternative version.
This limited edition controller has some pretty cool features. It has a transparent shell, chrome details, adjustable D-pad and blue guide button LEDs. Overall it's a very nice looking alternative to the regular white or black varieties. I managed to pick this up on offer for the same price as a regular model and so far I'm very happy with it. This only thing I didn't like so much were the thumbsticks, but as you'll see in this vid, that's now been taken care of :)

I did get this controller when i preeordered halo 4 (i could choose between a controller or a headset) and i like it. Its nice to just have it too :D

Man those 360 controllers are a bit more busy inside than the MegaDrive and SNES ones I'm used to :D

I have the 2 controllers that came with my Halo 4 360, different design and the clear shell is blue instead of grey. I'm not too bothered by the analogue sticks in them but I'd definitely be interested in getting a replacement sticks for my spare old white controller. They are pretty worn and you've shown its pretty easy to swap out.

It might just need reseated. But it could also mean the stick mechanism underneath has worn out. It's kinda difficult to say without taking a look. Controllers can be a real pain in the balls sometimes. The slightest bit of wear in any one of the buttons can throw the whole 'feel' of the pad off. Sometimes it's best just to replace the whole thing and save yourself the headache :P

Nice controller, I've got a couple of special edition controllers ( street fighter, call of duty etc.) would be great if you made a vid on how to replace the LED's for blue ones, I trust your guides so I would just follow yours. :-)

I took mine and left the right thumb stick black and the left one gray so it matches each side of the controller and I like the way it looks

Really bad idea IMO. Also, good luck maneuvering that molten plastic biro down the deep and very narrow holes in your expensive LE controller :P. Much easier+safer just to by the correct tool for a £/$. Failing that just use the technique I mentioned using a precision screwdriver. The melted biro method only really works for game carts where the screw is easily accessible. And even then it's likely going to damage your cart. Not to mention the fumes and dangers of handling hot molten plastic!

Yeah the 360's D-pad is it's only weakness IMO. Hope they sort it out for the next gen :)

Do you think you could make a video on modifying the PS3 controller's LEDs to change their color? It's probably fairly easy to do, but I'd like to see you do it. Perhaps even adding an LED to the PS Button so it has like a 'glow' effect to it. Just throwing ideas out. :)

like a boss. i had a mare takin a 360 controller apart.. well the putting it back together bit was where i had trouble cos the shoulder button bit was snapped. i have a thumbstick that coasts to the left after you've let go of it.. is this somethin that could be fixed by just replacing the stick or do you think its a deeper problem with the innards?

dont they make aftermarket clear controller cases? why not just leave that one alone and make the controller of your dreams?

Hey Martin, would you happen to know if the original XBox controllers use the same thumbsticks as the 360? I have an old XBox controller with some really worn sticks, but while I can find plenty of replacements for the 360, I haven't been able to find any specifically for the original XBox.

Also I think they left the battery pack black because it hides the stickers and other junk hiding under it.

I've been building and customizing 360 controllers for a few years now. I've never seen an aftermarket case/kit or controller that even came close to the quality of official Microsoft stuff. The build quality and feel are never quite right. With controllers you're always best sticking to official OEM.

The dpad isnt standard either btw not trying to criticize your video but the default dpads have 2 screws you have to use and look much different than the dpad design with this control where u can simply rotate 90 degrees and pop it out

I bought a new black wired controller a while back as my white wireless pads got years back are fucked .but with the new thumbsticks on the xbox controller now just fell different to me not the same smooth rubber as the old controllers .new controllers just fell more cheaply made to so just watching your vid and trying to switch round the thumbsticks.

Funny, I have millions of those thumb sticks. I ordered a pair on ebay for $2, and ended up with 50 pairs.

any hints on how to fix thumbstick controller drift? my halo 4 controllers left stick is 'walking' to the right, and my halo reach controller is pulling to the front too :(.

Unlike a boss, my 360 controller got rusty because I don't play it much so the batteries leaked! It doesn't work anymore even with other battery boxes. Easy to fix or is it time for me to seek a wired controller?

you know how to take the limited edition halo 4 controller mine fell on the ground and this caused the left bumper to go downward and stick it still is half way popped up and I can press it the only problem is I want it the way it was if I take it apart like you did can I adjust the spring or is the spring going to need to be replaced
