We've spent many hours discussing Halo Infinite - we've enjoyed the multiplayer but the limited campaign teasers have always presented us with more questions than answers. Now, having gone hands-on using Xbox Series consoles, we have some answers - and here's John and Alex to share their thoughts. Does Halo really work as an open world experience?

I'm actually happy to hear that the Open world sections are chopped up. I rather like that design a lot. Like more dense smaller areas instead of one massive area where you get bogged down with fetch quests

Mass Effect 2 was fantastic with and indeed perfected that "more dense smaller areas instead of one massive area" etc...That design makes the world feel so much more lived in and alive.

Reminds me a bit of Dishonored, where the levels were linear, but they were "open-sided" so that you could progress the way you wanted and have side things you could do/find.

Pretty much how Far Cry 6 is however you can exploit ease of mapping traversal with the wingsuit,m but yes it can be very annoying and repetitive.

I gotta say, the constructive criticisms are much appreciated as always, but my biggest takeaway is that the campaign is looking great. Whether it's you guys, Game Informer, IGN - all the coverage of the campaign so far has me breathing a big sigh of relief. I think I'm finally allowing myself to get properly excited for it!

You can really see how they are invested in the technologies. With some luck, 343 can still update some of the issues before release... Let's wait and see!

@@tmg2315 agreed. But Metro Exodus was by far the most polished one, and had the best chance to hit a mainstream audience. Sadly that whole epic store exclusivity killed all goodwill.

Have you not watched any of the videos by any of the known Halo content creators or ign? The game uses open world hubs, like they did in Gears 5. As they add the next campaign expansion in a year or two they will have new hub worlds. So, far everything has been positive and praised by some of.the harshest critiques. No doubt some sony fanboy will say the opposite, but I think we are looking at 87-92 Meta critic score. Multiplayer will be the only thing that nay pull the game.score back but as 343i are eseentially marketing two as seperate entities, we may get two seperste scoring.

Multiplayer is amazing but the campaign is really what I’ve been looking for. This semi “open world” approach seems like what Bungie wanted to do with Halo CE but never trully could due to technical limitations

20:00 spot on. If I’m not mistaken, this happens in multiplayer too. I have my fps count on and out of nowhere it seams like the frame-rate drops to like 30fps but my computer still is doing above 90+fps. Very weird, glad you pointed it out.

Not sure if anyone knows this, but if you log into the game through the Xbox app on PC and turn on the framerate counter, it activates for the console copy as well. Pretty awesome to see a FR counter in the console version as well.

So it sounds like the actual game/game play is looking really good. To me that's the main thing because it can't be "fixed", the constructive criticisms described at the end... all fixable. So all in all then to me, it sounds pretty damn good. Can't wait to play it!

@@jamiewalton666 You can, on PC. It’s not difficult to comprehend the hardware inside of the Series X has limitations. 1080p at 120fps is phenomenal and dynamic 4K at 60fps is amazing.

@@tears2040 in halo multiplayer beta 3080ti can't provide stable 100 fps @1440p on low settings So yes, you can have 120 fps @4k on pc, but not in this game.

No, you don’t - no fall damage. HiddenX scaled many mountains and said that he really REALLY had to try try try to get to a death timer or a wall - and on top of that, he noticed many areas where You wouldn’t think you were supposed to be there, but then when you got there there would be an enemy or some other kind of goodie

@@WigWoo1 So you are talking about in the open world then? Ah - OK there I *did not experience a death fall* - no death timer fall there within the bounds of the gameplay arena. In a campaign mission I did though, but it was not the open world segment.

The key is that there always should feel like there's a strong NARRATIVE DRIVING you through the campaign. I'm in favour of half/semi open world design.

You guys nailed it, I'm glad to hear I'm not losing my mind lol. I'm running this on a 3090 and pretty solid specs, but the game just feels off even though it says I'm clocking 90+ FPS, animation quality on max etc. I really hope they fix this because it is jarring for me. I play Halo for the story first and everything else second, but that IMO is very immersion breaking.

I use a Steelseries arctic 9x headset , buttkicker gamer 2, Curved Samsung 32'' 1440p monitor and series x @ 120fps and it just works out perfectly. Everything runs smooth, clear graphics and every weapon sounds and feels unique and combined with the buttkicker it's just an awesome polished game allready.

This console generation has changed the FPS paradigm! Image quality focussed games (RPGs & more) have now a 60FPS option, while fast-paced action games are 60FPS base, and have a 120 FPS "Performance" option. I think this is really great!

@@griffgames9538 I was talking about performance, not price. Consoles are the best bang for a buck, no arguing about that. Especially with current GPU prices. But if you want 60 fps @ 1440p with best visuals, PC is the clearly the winner. And if you want 60 fps @ 4k, PC is the only choice.

@Digital Foundry, I would like to let you guys know that, in my opinion, having a background in the "multi-webcam" shots like this one here at 4:00, looks much better than just plain black "abyss". And the funny thing (at least for me) is that I was just thinking about how cool it would be if you would've added it, while watching the latest DF Direct (#37 to be exact). So, yea - thanks I guess... 😀 Appreciate your work.

At minimum please play through the first 3 but 4 is also great! Infinite also carries on the story of 5. Well worth all of it

The most important aspect of the game is the gameplay, I'm so relieved that you guys seem to like how it feels and plays, relieved it's not like farcry and seems to be well thought out in terms of its design and variety of what you can do. really looking forward to it especially after feeling underwhelmed with the halo 5 campaign.

Stellar Video as always, I’m glad someone talked about the TAA as honestly at lower resolutions especially 1080p on PC it really turns everything into a bit of a soupy mess. Hope 343 could perhaps give us an option for different types of AA or an Off feature.

Another Great Video/Review from the Foundry.....Nice One !! Did you manage to find the Secret & Cool Alternate way to Clear the Landing Pad for your ship to be able to land in the 3rd level, along with a Hidden Room which contains an Equally Cool Easter Egg !?!? !! Keep Up the Great Work Guys !!

Thanks for pointing out the black levels, thought it was my TV when I started playing the Multiplayer beta and the cinematics came on in the Academy.. Same issue you just described. Really hoping that gets fixed.

Digital Foundry is as good as Santa Barbara of the early 90’s. All actors/ team members are lovable and characteristic, there’s endless digital drama because of messy games being released all the time. 😊😉

Yeah i noticed that too. It happens in other games too, but often not that obvious. I don't get how people don't notice stuff like that unless they are ignoring it on purpose. I will never believe anyone ever again who says that there are no issues or no framedrops etc. in their games. There are always people who don't even notice 20fps drops in BOTW or say that they PS4 Pro was totally silent. And as they said in the video, it's not meant to talk the game down or anything, it's criticism to improve the game. I hate how people are just used to blindly defending every single aspect of a game just because they like it. If you like it you would want it to be even better.

I’m so glad you brought up the mantle being choppy, As well as reloading some weapons. I thought it was my machine. I’m running on a PC and in multiplayer I couldn’t figure out why it would stutter whenever those events would happen. It’s good to know that there is an issue and it’s not my rig.

First halo I've played since halo 1 on the PC. Had a bit of a nostalgia trip! Also the gameplay is tremendously fun imo.

You should go back and play halo 2-4 and reach to understand more of the story. Play halo wars 1-2 or watch the cutscenes if you aren’t into that style of game.

@@Jaykurosakii If the goal is to understand more of the story then it wouldn't do to skip Halo 5. I think it's a good campaign, I had fun with it, I've never given a damn about the Halo story or Cortana, it just played very well.

You should read the books and also halo 5 campaign is regarded as the worse because it doesn’t make much sense lore wise and it’s just badly written which is why they went back to the roots with Halo Infinite instead of continuing on in the Halo 5 direction

@@Jaykurosakii Halo Infinite is not ignoring the events of Halo 5 though. If somebody is playing through the series to get caught up on the story they'll be lost if they just stop at 4. What happens to Cortana in 5, whether or not people like it, still matters to the lore, a person should at least read up on the story of Halo 5 if they're going to go through all of the trouble of playing the other games. And, no, I don't care about Cortana or the Halo story. I've played all of the campaigns and I thought 4 and 5 were the most engaging in gameplay and level design.

me too because iam pc gamer. I was a kid when halo 1 released on pc and later 2. Since 2019 that they started releasing them on pc one by one i played all oft hem and i must say they are some of the best games i have played. @@WillOnCode Have another watch. There's an emphasis on wildlife and varied environments - an overall tone of awe. The full game doesn't have the same variety, but hopefully the campaign story will feel similar.

Awesome to hear that you guys are enjoying the content of the campaign after some initial concerns. It's reassuring to know that Halo hasn't taken the Far Cry route of doing things. Bit of a shame that there's some weird technical issues present (especially those low framerate animations) but hopefully 343 can get that patched up so the game can look its best! Will be curious to see how the game's look also changes/improves when raytracing is brought in sometime post launch. Can't wait to dive into the campaign on December 8th!

Excellent hands-on impressions video! I'm not into Halo, but like with your other stuff, I enjoy seeing the ways it excels and the ways that it can improve. It's kind of strange, though, because while the game seems to play okay and have a fast frame rate, the animations in the game and even the cinemas don't flow well. Hmm. I'd imagine that the cinemas could be made to flow as well as they'd like. I mean, wasn't that the reason for them in the first place in video games?...to have something that doesn't require real-time rendering?

I play on my razer blade laptop and I’ve noticed the variable rate shading is intense lol it should be noted though that I have it set to 120fps cap/target so I think if I brought that down to 60 I’d probably see it less often, but obviously when you’re sweating it up in multiplayer just having a blast running around shootin fools, you simply will never notice it, so I love that it’s there as a feature. Can’t wait for more games to utilize it

yeah i've noticed that too. it's really obvious during the training mode where the female spartan talks to you, it's incredibly choppy until you're back on the controls even though the transition is seamless. something isn't right with the cutscenes and animations.

It seems like there is mention of the stuttering animations on the Halo Infinite Known Beta Issues. It reads as follows: "Some first-person animations may appear to stutter at 60 FPS or higher". I sincerly hope 343 is aware of this issue + bad cutscene playblack and is working to address those issues.

Wow that grenade throw at 25% speed was crazy! There seems to be literally 3 frames to the animation. I seem to remember some Halo "making of" documentary where they talked about the melee animation feeling best in 3 frames. That way it really feels like you're connecting the punch almost immediately. I wonder if this is some remnant of that which hasn't scaled with all the various framerates they support now

Are you able to do an analysis on the lack of exclusive fullscreen for Halo Infinite and if it really causes input lag? Been seeing it said both ways, that borderless definitely introduces input lag, or that DX12 actually doesn't and it's not an issue. Would love you take on it of it's something you can test!

In my opinion; after playing all the flights and this beta, Ive noticed the Spartan models do a odd shake/vibration when even standing still and sometimes you can see this when you look straight down. idk if maybe its a issue with the model being two halfs {like shown in single halo clips the body can be separated at the waist }. The cutscenes I believe is not prerendered, I think the cutscenes is using models like how bungie did in their old cutscenes. but perhaps the vibration/shake of the models is having a glitch issue and its showing in the cutscene that yall was describing . Also maybe having more than one issue with that like probably syncing issue with a variety of things. To me, Infinite is takes aspects of Halo 3s Physics engine, Halo 5s Mechanics but nerfed , and Halo Reachs aesthetics but more vibrant and good storytelling from the Bungie era. So they have talked about whats the best parts in each Halo and then build upon that. I can see it in a variety of things even though the progression/customization isnt like how it could be. Lots of potential for sure. If they gave out 4 missions, then i hope we will have more than 20 missions because that alot of content to show to the many. Hopefully they have a updated version than what yall played. Perhaps a compression issue of the original upload for those 4 missions had affected it. but then again im not a expert or know anything about this. Just a possible perspective for others to build upon for any help to the matter

Best part of this video was adding the incorrect settings to his overlay so we can understand what was missed by Bungie in the cut scene. As someone that doesn't notice 60pfs 120hz and 4k plus motion blur and black levels and all these other things.... but rather just the game play and assuming no real input lag/rubber banding- it was nice to visualize the issue.

I've obviously only played the multiplayer, but some of the graphical decisions confuse me. The texture resolution, and lod distance for non foliage objects is extremely high, even on low settings. Meanwhile shadow resolution for the 1 or 2 lights that actually cast shadows at all is very low on ultra settings (it barely picks up the huge warthog tyres). The priorities for different graphical options seems off We also need an option to turn off taa, it's great for DRS but it's always quite blurry, even rendering at 6k downsampled to my 1440p monitor

Yea I think that the animations are equally the same as that of the lesser consoles (Xbox one family) that really sets the pc and Xbox series family backwards in terms of animation consistency. There’s even noticeable differences in multiplayer that I’ve seen myself.
