Master chief in the books is on reach, it’s never touched on in Halo Reach the game but basically while Noble Team is doing their mission, Master Chief is on a mission with two other spartans(that die) to destroy data from a space station before being put to cryo sleep on the pillar of autumn.

They also said chief will face off 15 elites with energy swords in his mission without taking off the helmet
