You give very good step by step instruction on your videos. And the on-screen stuff is very easy for my old eyes to see well. You have no idea how much I appreciate that. I am not exactly tech savvy... to old to learn new tricks. I am one of the few people on the planet who does not even have a cell phone (there is no cell service where I live). For a ham I know that is quite odd. But when I started in radio (in the 60s) radios were really quite simple. There was no "programming", just a dial. I stay in radio because I live way back in the mountains and should I REALLY need help of some kind I can get out and ask for it. VHF and UHF has never been my thing, but I am giving it a try just for the heck of it. It gives me something to do.

Thank you for this video. I have had the radio in my truck for a couple of years now but never really learned to use it beyond the memory settings I put into it now using the RTS systems cable and software. Recently I was acting as net control for a local network and discovered to my surprise that when I programmed the radio with repeaters in my area here in Alaska that there were several repeaters with the same call sign, but different PL tones. To my horror I didn't know which repeater in my memory bank was the one I was supposed to host the net on, so I had to dig out the manual for figuring out how to manually program the correct repeater in using my ARRL Repeater book for the information. I was able to get that done but then took the radio in and reset all the memory banks and channels using the repeater location as opposed to just the call sign to ID which one I was on. Your videos are terrific for getting to know my radio and I am very happy I found you. Thank you so much for such really helpful information. 73 AD7VV

I have been using this radio as my UHF/VHF base station since early 2020. I have the radio behind the desk, and the faceplate is affixed to my computer monitor riser. It's a great performing radio, and particularly performs better on simplex than any of the budget transceivers I used before. The only complaint I have is the same one I've seen others have: the fan is loud, and kicks in the entire time you are transmitting if you use high power. In a vehicle in the trunk or under the seat, that's no biggie, but as a base station, even packed away behind the desk, it is a bit distracting. But that has yet to make me want to replace it, and I'd still recommend it to friends. Anyway, nice and comprehensive video!

I've noticed the fan is a bit loud and obnoxious. I've been using the radio a bit but it doesn't seem to really get that hot even on high power...I wish the fan speed could be turned down a little.

@@scottsavoie7072 I can confirm that once you buy the cable, it works with Chirp as well as the icom software. The iCom software is more tailored to the radio, but I use Chirp (since I'm already used to it) and it works fine with the radio.

If I understand correctly, I would be able to broadcast from a handheld to channel 1 on this radio and it will relay (send) the message on a different frequency on channel 2. Basically a built in repeater.
@SevenFortyOne

Sort of, yes. This radio has cross band repeat function. You can transmit on uhf from a handheld and this radio will retransmit what it receives on vhf or vice versa

I've gotten that complaint as well. I talk soft sometimes and don't always hold the mic close. When someone complains I speak up and make sure I'm talking directly into the mic and that seems to fix the issue. Having said that, I don't have that problem with other radios...just this one

I have one in my wifes car. I chose this as it had the detachable face that accepts the mic into the face. I took the dash all apart, took all the interior out for access to the factory wire channels to the trunk. It makes for a super clean install. The control box is in the trunk hidden away. I even hid the coax in the trunk lid hinge and that is invisible. I do hate the way the radio programs, and operates. For me I struggle with the way the menu and control operations are set up. My kenwoods are easy to run, this needs a manual to do anything. I keep the manual right in the car. I am sure if I ran it more I would become accustom to the operation. The mic cord insulation broke almost immediately right at the entrance to the mic. The small wires were exposed so I took a drip of super glue to make that spot ridged so it would not flex and break the small wires.
@SevenFortyOne
@SevenFortyOne 2 жыл бұрын
Good tip on the mic wires. We'll see how long this lasts after I install it.

New ham here. About to hook this up as a base radio. Dumb question….Where does the sound come out? The head? Mic? Main radio unit? Or is an external speaker recommended?

I have owned the IC-2730 for over a year and use it as a base station radio. It is excellent. No complaints about the hardware. I have been a HAM for over thirty years and I would say that this radio has the worst written manual Icom has ever put out. It's as though someone who spoke poor Japanese and knew nothing about radios wrote a manual and then let someone for whom English was a second language translate it for them. It's that bad. No, probably worse. Thank God for these KZfaq videos or you would never program this thing.

if you make videos international, then you should give the dimensions in metric as well, not just inches
@SevenFortyOne
@SevenFortyOne Жыл бұрын
I don't make them international intentionally but I suppose they reach other countries by happenstance. Come to think of it I've see videos from other countries that just list out Metric but never really was bothered by that. I think maybe in the future I'll just leave measurements out altogether and direct people to the manual since both units are usually there.
