Hamilton Street
Written and Produced by Michael Stewart
"Hamilton Street," is a heartfelt tribute to the cherished memories and unforgettable moments of my childhood and youth. The story begins in 1969 when my family moved into number 15 Hamilton Street. This street wasn't just an address; it was a vibrant community, a place where friendships were forged, adventures were had, and life lessons were learned.
One of my dearest friends, Peter-affectionately known as Zed-lived at number 22 Hamilton Street. Our friendship was a cornerstone of my early years, and the bond we shared is beautifully encapsulated in "Hamilton Street." The song captures the essence of our childhood escapades and the deep sense of camaraderie that permeated our lives. to his wonderful mum Mrs Zed thank you for the lunches, smiles and your favourite colour red.
The 1970s were filled with simple joys and formative experiences. I got a job at Twin Parks packing groceries, rode my bike to school, skateboarded, and zipped around on a scooter. The Boundary Road shop was a frequent stop for too many lollies, and I vividly recall the thrill of these small indulgences. A hello here and there always a day with something to do.
One of the most poignant memories from Hamilton Street was the 1974 flood, which brought the water right up to Mrs. Moncrief's backdoor. Mrs. Moncrief was a beacon of kindness in our neighborhood. She welcomed us to our new home with ice cream in 1969 and even recorded me playing "Smoke on the Water" on her tape deck in the seventies. Hearing my mother’s reaction to that recording-"that sounds familiar"-still brings a smile to my face.
The stars of Hamilton Street were many: my siblings Stephen and Loralee, my Mum and Dad, Peter's family, Lynette, and countless friends like Bambi (Leanna), Dianne, Simon, Jannelle, Michelle, Paul, Chris, Jeaneen, Quinny, John and Mrs and Mrs Picking. Our neighbours, the football games in the backyard, and the sense of community we shared made Hamilton Street a magical place to grow up.
However, time marches on, and in 1996, after the passing of my mother, I had to sell our home on Hamilton Street. Parting with the house was a difficult decision, filled with regret and nostalgia. It marked the end of an era but the memories of those golden years remain vivid and cherished.
"Hamilton Street" is more than just a song; it's a tribute to a time and place that shaped who I am. It's a celebration of the good times and the wonderful people who made those years so special. This song is my way of honouring those memories and sharing the warmth and joy of Hamilton Street with the world. Michael
