Absolutely agreed. Max gave room, Lewis took too much advantage of that room. And since Lewis has lately been frustrated and desperate to get close to Max, he let it go deep into the corner. Toto was suspiciously quick with notifying the stewards. Merc really embodied a spiteful, jealous child this weekend.

Love hearing your POV, you're the first person (to my knowledge) who has actually mentioned the huge understeer, fuel weight, lack of tyre temps and lack of clean air obviously didn't help. Finally an analysis I agree with 100% Also, people saying this is the type of racing we want … to them I’d say I would rather see a full GP of racing than just 1 lap. It also makes for a fairer championship. Hamilton making a mistake is okay, it happens.. he’s human after all, but it’s a mistake that had to be penalized to set precedence. It put Max at great risk.
@Allblue1
@Allblue1 2 жыл бұрын
Yea we want full races but at the this point in the championship max till this point put lewis in a position that kinda says do or die. Lewis was never going to make that corner, and lewis basically said if this is how you want to play this game then yeet ill send you into the wall. at first I thought it was 50/50 and didn't understand why LH was getting so much blame but now I understand thank to this video but from monza it was 50/50 no one expects for max to fly so max and lewis take that risk. But then max did go to far later on in the season purely due stewards who deemed this racing okie. This lead lewis also doing the same in the last race and was let free personally i think they agreed to LH keept the advantage because it was paying him for all the bad calls. But lewis was pushed all the way max was never going to give respect to LH vice versa. As a Lh fan i feel like in order for lewis to win this chip he couln;t be making stupid mistakes like that

@austinjestis7124

Yep think of the luck Hamilton had. Silverstone. Minimum 18pts. Possibly 25pts. Baku- 26pts. Monza-PitCrew waited 12sec because the Light malfunctioned. He shoulda been Miles up the road & no where near Lewis and won or finished 2nd. But FIA docked him 3 points for a 50/50 collision…. Hungary- Bottas plowed everyone but his teammate and Max recovered 2pts but shoulda coulda won that race or even p2. 16-23pts lost. Plus Lewis’s luck. He went wide in Bahrain T4 30 times with no penalty.. gaining 3secs over the race while max went wide 3 times 1 time was AFTER he passed Hamilton but they counted that as a penalty. Because he overtook off track but the overtake was done. Either way tough break and a 13point swing. Lewis lucky in Imola. Should have been 1 lap down getting his car fixed but Russel & Bottas coincidently brought out a red flag and they allowed him to rebuild the damage, fresh tires, & get unlap him self. He finished 2nd when he should have finished 8th. 14pt swing. Max should have won that Championship by idk 50points minimum. 1 lucky break in Abu Dhabi doesn’t equal 20+ races of bad luck with all I mentioned plus the Stewards calls all year were against him. He literally got 1 fortunate call. 10wins to LH-8 10poles to LH-5 652 Laps led to LH-297 18podiums to LH-17 Bad Luck Winner- Max Good Luck winner- Lewis 😂😂😂😂😂 Max is King!

Totally agree with your analysis! Lewis as a 7time World Champion should know that a race is not won in the first lap (although he did win that race thanks to a ridiculous penalty and a car faster by almost 1 second than the rest of the field), he could easily have waited for other, better opportunities. He also had Max as the first serious competitor in years, so he went a little bit into "overheating" mode. What pisses me off is his inability to admit a mistake, maybe that's the result of having dominated the F1 turbo-hybrid era for so long. I am not a Hamilton hater nor a Verstappen fan btw..! Passing inside on a fast corner is super dangerous because a small error risks the driver and ruins the race. There is no recovery for the outside driver. I have heard so much stuff about "touching the apex" or "following the natural racing line" and to be honest I don't really know why. I know that this was the issue pointed out by the stewards, but there is no rule saying that a driver has to touch the apex (as James Alison mentioned). And I don't think Lewis wanted to touch the apex at all, it would have compromised his exit. I would have deemed this a racing incident. There have been several situations that were not different from this one (and, yes, I am considering how alongside Hamilton was) that didn't get even 5 second penalty.

@MAAHAQQ Yes you're right he doesn't have to by rule, it's only what every F1 driver tries to do, and regarding the qually lap you're wrong. He does hit the paint at the apex. Watch the video you linked. He also approached the copse from the outside line on his qually lap, which is the typical and best racing line. Notice how Verstappen went wide there during the race, so he could get the best cut in to the apex as he could especially with Hamilton on the inside. He turned in but left more than a car's width inside. Hamilton went in with way too much speed on that inside line and could not turn in to the apex. Essentially he drove straight into the side of Verstappen. 100% Hamilton's fault. Since FIA is handing joke penalties I guess it's open season now.

I fully agree with your analysis of the accident, and it probably aligns pretty well with how the race stewards looked at it. However, I think the stewards were soft on Lewis: The level of risk/personal jeopardy is extreme in high speed corners like Copse. This accident could have killed someone and obviously it trashed the RedBull. (Over $1M in damage) A 10 second stop/go in the pits with no ability for Mercedes to service Hamilton's car would have been more appropriate given the level of jeopardy and the fact that Lewis came in so hot he had absolutely no hope of hitting the apex.

Plus a 10 second time penalty is already a gigantic penalty, a drive through and stop and go is way too much. Plus if max went on the outside he would carry more speed through cops allowing him to stay ahead, and he should of known that hamilton would understeer due to dirty part of the track he was going, all of these could of prevented the crash, plus either one of them couldve of shield but neother did, that cause the accident. This as far as racing is a racing incident, however there probably other factors that the FIA brought in that made lewis get the penalty. Sorry but this Comment is a tad bit bias towards verstappen, but understandable since that was a 25 point lost and was pretty big and alot of people are still talking about it.

@@cesardepena7498 you can't just conclude that modern cars are strong enough to make sure that a driver wont be injured or worse. A driver could still have injuries or even die. Adding to that 10 seconds was in this scenario not huge at all, as both drivers were in a league of their own, and the gap to the other drivers usually was bigger than ten seconds. Great methodical and knowledgeable assessment. I thought the same on the day after the replays, especially the copter shot. So agree. I think the challenge with the penalty comes down to one key attribute that isn't considered appropriately in F1. That is 'Impact'. The Impact of an incident should multiply the penalty, as is the case in most other sports. The same mistake or 'at fault' incident on a slower corner isn't as grave as it is on one of the fastest corners in F1. A 10 second penalty would be fine if it was multiplied by impact. It's not about the letter of the law, its about the outcome. FE: A forced off the track, vs a hit the barrier, vs a smashed into the barrier. They could use the G-force meter of the crashing car to determine impact.

The car on the inside line of a corner entry has the tactical advantage of the spot for corner entry and to hold the inside line. Blaming the car that holds the inside line into a corner, without reckless movement, for causing the car on the outside line to increase steering wheel input and collide into the inside car, is not how auto-racing basics works. It took a measured movement of the outside-line car to make contact with the inside-line car going through the corner. This is an incident that Max and his spotters created by not holding his line. Lewis did nothing improper nor did he cause the collision. Max failed to hold the space between cars and caused his own crash by failing to hold his own line knowing Lewis is still inside of Max's car. Max's spotters should've been informing him "Inside!" and his right-side mirrors are full of Lewis. It's Racing 101! The inside car has the line through the corner. The outside car has to yield to the inside car's line. Regardless of "who has the lead", when two cars enter a corner and they are within space of, next to each other, the cars are required to hold their respective line without colliding. The furtive movement was caused by the outside car. The outside car lost the battle of the corner.

if the choice is between hitting a car or the apex, you go for the apex. As Lewis was on the inside and on Max's rear, he could either hit the apex or Max. He decided to miss the apex. It's not like you can push someone wide if you are behind. What are your thoughts on the FIA guidance notes for stewards for overtaking Scott @driver61? In Merc's debrief they explained that be "if a car is sufficiently up the inside of another car pre corner (doesn't have to be infront) and can make the corner (doesn't say has to hit the apex) the driver on the inside has the corner. Is that correct or are Mercedes twisting words?
@BenLewisMaverick
@BenLewisMaverick 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, also curious as to your opinion on this? These seem to suggest strongly that the event could be considered a racing incident? I appreciate what you are saying about the driver on the inside basically bearing all of the responsibility for keeping everyone safe, but it seems that these guidelines breakdown various situations in more detail, properly considering the positioning of the cars. Also there seems to be a lot of discussion on the ‘correct‘ racing line and trajectory through/past the apex, with some citing deviation from this as proof of an error.. however the reality is (-especially when wheel-to-wheel racing, lining up for an over take, driving in the wet, trying to get out of hot/dirty air, etc) that taking later or earlier apexes and creative lines through corners is not only acceptable but a required part of circuit racing to gain an advantage over the competition. The reason that I mention it, is that after hearing many view differing analysis, I still believe both cars could have easily made it through the corner (side by side, if necessary) with minimal loss of momentum if they had given each other adequate space. According to FIA guidance (for ‘chase car sufficiently up the inside of the lead’), neither driver had any obligation to yield, so it comes down to driver judgement and observation - Max’s mistake was that he judged Lewis to be in a position that he wasn’t (or perhaps did observe correctly, but was attempting to force Lewis into yielding) and Lewis’ was to push too hard into the corner, leaving himself deeper than typical, especially when you consider the narrow angle he was forced to approach the corner from.

One can argue who’s fault it was or wasn’t, but to be “fair” one can also argue that the prudent move by Max was to keep a little bit more to the left, opening up the corner more, yes, Hamilton may have passed him, but he would still be in the race, gaining more points instead of as of now gettin none, as the saying goes “you don’t win the race in the first corner” or the first lap, nor the second, but giving yourself the opportunity to be there in the end of the race would be 100% better than sitting in the barrier early in the race

This is exactly the same conclusion I came to. But for some reason all the British commentators, from official F1 to Peter Windsor and The Race, all saying Max should somehow ought to give Lewis even more space than he already did; Especially Lawrence Barretto from F1TV saying it was Max's fault was a majorly flawed analysis. Chances are if Max had done that, he would have gotten wide on the exit with that speed and gone off the track and gotten a time penalty like we saw before earlier this season. But frankly even IF Max did gave Lewis more space, Lewis was on such a trajectory and speed he would have collided into Max anyway.
@jamcock8187
@jamcock8187 3 жыл бұрын
It was Max's fault. He turned in on Lewis way too soon trying to force Lewis to back off, which obviously Lewis didn't. I just hope the younger drivers are taking lessons from Lewis how to deal with the bully. Max's driving style will definitely cause more accidents.

In the past for sure it would be racing incident but if we want to penalise someone it's certainly Lewis to blame. The second thing is penalty itself... Max ended up in hospital without any points to his name. Lewis got unscathed and ended with 25 points,... cheering like crazy with his fans (with Max still in hospital). In this circumstances it's simply disgraceful. Shame on you "sir" Lewis and Mercedes.

I have never understood this 10-second penalty in general. Why are you allowed to serve your penalty whenever you want? It doesn't make any sense at all. There used to be a rule that you had to serve a penalty within 3 laps. But this way he had enough time to cover his back.

@@Brian_Tabor actually Max saw Lewis and avoided him. Everyone who watched the race saw, in the post-race analysis in slow-mo, Max turning his head right, seeing Lewis then steering left. I guess he didn't account for the understeer that was happening. The way I see it I don't think it was an understeer that wasn't planned by Lewis. He was desperate. And gave Max the opportunity to make what they call in American sports "a business decision." But I guess Max decided his health wasn't as valuable as Lewis thought. Lewis was at fault for putting Max in that situation. But Max once put in that situation should have "lived to fight another day." Thank god he is fine.
