Good video. I was on the Rigid first vacuum to buy because of price, but now I would recommend the lower end Dewalt vacuums. They are quieter, have better wheels and build, and they don't have that funky hose connector: you can use Ridgid hoses and perhaps Festool.

totally agree about the festool end! it's great. I have the older rigid hose and it drives me a bit nuts when I connect to tools... found this video when i was looking for a visual comparison with the newer braided hose! I'm just cleaning up my workshop so I use one 36mm hose for everything (connected to central vac piping) - the only issue with festool is that some tools only take a 27mm hose, and festool doesn't sell a 36mm-27mm adapter. But third parties sell them! i busted out my bosch jigsaw the other day and was cursing myself for not getting a festool jigsaw... the plug-it connection system is worth every penny. i keep a plug-it cord strapped to my vac hose (which is on a boom arm) and it's so great to never have to worry about cords!!

I like the build of Ridgid wet and dry vacuums better than some others. Ridgid's parent company Emerson is a good company to buy from when it comes to relatively heavy duty vacuum cleaners. Their back pack vacuum line seems of decent quality too, from what I have seen. The basic 20 foot hose I bought for my Ridgid has two relatively high-flex ends and works well. I like the idea of having locking tools and wands on them as well as it's less likely to come apart than just friction-style systems. My Ridgid is a curb find that I pulled apart and cleaned and it was pretty easy to do that with it. It moves a lot of air and really can spin a turbine powered carpet brush on the 2.5" hose for a single stage 5" fan motor. I think that's in part due to the large fan volute that discharges the air.

Thanks. It can be maddening to find the right vacuum hoses. I installed a vacuum system with (4") - and trying to mate the system up to my smaller shop tools is hard to figure out at times.

Probably the most helpful information about dust hose connecting with common brands I have seen. Have to say, I use festool equipment, hoses are great. It is great to see that at least Festool are making an effort to connect to other equipment but Dewalt, they have gone way down in my estimations for compatibility. A bit like trying to plug Sony speakers into anything else but Sony. Absolutely not cool, just a pain in the ass and with people health and production standards at stake around the world, they should now be forced to be more compatible in my opinion.

I would love to add a CT36 to my shop, but my budget says Ridgid 4gal from Home Depot , accessorized with a Festool hose and the FastCap remote. Seeing I’m typically outside with any sawing/woodworking projects, HEPA isn’t “needed” but dust collection is nice to have. Thanks for confirming fitment of the Festool hose with the Ridgid vac

I have a ridgid shop vac that came with the smaller orange hose, and had the same problem plugging into my dewalt miter saw. I have a couple Bosch tools that came with a 1 1/4” to 1 1/12” hose adapters and they work great. That adapter works with the orange hose to my dewalt miter saw and makita track saw without that cumbersome connector you had. I don’t know, hope this helps.

Hi Brad, Thanks for a really useful presentation. If possible, would you be able to tell me the outside diameter of the Festool connector that connects to the Festool vacuum. So the connector at the vacuum end of the hose not the tool end of the hose. The connector that is the same size as the Rigid. I have a hose and a connector for a particular tool and I wanted to see if I could connect it to the Festool Vac. Thanks.

Thank you very much for this video. I'm debating a dust extraction purchase, and the hose is the difference in my mind. I'm a DeWalt fan, but the Festool hose is superior. There are compatible connectors that I have found on Amazon that will adapt the Festool to my DeWalt cordless sander, and even one for my Dewalt contractor saw etc... With a similar price point I'm forced to go with the better hose. Plus, the Festool has a Bluetooth button that you can purchase separately that attaches at the end of the hose next to the tool that you're using to turn the extractor on remotely . Just amazing stuff these days to help you out. This from a retired plumber that really enjoys woodworking when I'm not fishing, gardening, or mishandling my lovely wife's bum :-) An earned subscription, young man.

Thanks Gazman! It really is amazing how tool tech has changed so much in the last 20 years. I’ve always struggled with the dust collection issue. So many adapters and tape🤣 but the festool hose has really made it easy to use. I’m also using the Milwaukee backpack vac for a lot of things. But it is limited to what tools to use it on. Another feature of the festool hose is that you can connect two hoses to each other so it is longer or you can connect the ends of the hose so you can move the hose without dust falling out. And the rotating ends are so nice to have, they are really expensive but there are so much worth it.

Nice video. Very helpful, indeed. Just one question... If the Dewalt vacuum outlet and the Ridgid hose end are the exact same size, then why couldn't you just use a basic Ridgid hose coupler to connect them? It looks like there's enough of a tail piece coming out of the vacuum to hold it. Yes???

Found your video looking for vacuum hose alternatives and adapter suggestions. Nice video. Maybe do a little research about static, sawdust and fire/explosion though. No one-man shop can produce the volume of fine sawdust needed to sustain the correct air/fuel mixture needed to explode. Our shops are not grain elevators or high-volume professional shops. If you find a documented (not your brother's best friend's hairdresser's dentist who knows a guy that heard once that it can happen) then let me know (It's never happened). Home shops burn down because of bad electrical work, heaters & A/C issues and spontaneous combustion from VOC's and rag piles not dust issues.

Hey Brad - great video. You have a new subscriber. I’ve got an old Shop-Vac. 2 stage filter, 109” static pressure, it’s a good machine. It has a 2 1/2” hose. Whenever I adapt it down to fit a tool with a smaller port (say my belt sander or porta plane), the motor on the Shop-Vac goes significantly higher pitch and sounds like it’s racing. Do your vacs do the same? If so, has it damaged the motors on any of your vacs?

I have one rigid vac that i use for hooking up to tools and i have noticed it now has a very high pitch sound to the motor as well, it might be bad for it, I think that's why my Festool has a variable speed motor on it, so you dont suck to hard and over work the motor, just some thoughts, thanks for the sub😊👍

My take on this, for what it's worth. Electrical input power to a vacuum motor actually goes down as you restrict the intake airflow. As such, it's doing less work. The noise is just two things, the vacuum motor rpms rising and the higher air velocity through any restricted orifices due to the greater pressure differential. The important point is, the load on the motor actually goes down the more the intake is restricted, so less heat is generated in that sense. You may lose some cooling from the vacuum air stream (flow through motors, which are the worst of the lot and probably not what you have) but not on other styles with specific air cooling systems (peripheral bypass, tangential etc). Technically the higher motor RPM's may wear the bearings faster, but I doubt it's noticeable in terms of lifespan relative to heap of other factors at play (most notably the wear influence of any grit working it's way into bearings). If you don't believe me, measure the input power yourself with a clamp meter around the hot wire in the input lead. The logic is simple though, the motor doesn't 'do work to generate a vacuum' - The vacuum is just a byproduct of what the motor actually does work on - namely, getting the turbine spinning against the resistance of any gas and particulates that are present inside the vacuum cleaner system. As such, the more air it can pump out without that air being replaced, the lower it's workload actually becomes because the atmosphere is 'thinner' that the turbine is spinning in. Remember, most shop vac motors aren't smart (they don't measure gauge pressure and have a feedback loop to try and chase some specific pressure level or differential), they just aim to spin the motor at some amount of RPMs (be it induction motors related to line frequency, electronically excited and speed controlled etc). The very newest of fan/turbine motors are starting to get a bit smarter with BLDC / ECM motors that can do variable speed, but even then it's about power saving more than anything else.

Put about a foot of shrink wrap on the end of your Dewalt hose. That will stiffen it up the hose so it doesn't kink or fold up on ya.

I have the cen-tec snap fittings..... Exactly compatable with my FLEX/ Nilfisk vacum.....fittings and hoses compatible. Tool fittings have been available for everything I have....hose adapters are available to fit ridgid type vacs also. Very reasonably priced. Anti-static hose in many lengths available as is regular hose.

Sadly the festool hose is too small for actual general purpose vacuums. I would love to have the pro in a 2 1/2” but I can’t find one anywhere. And yeah it’s a $200 hose but it’s literally the last hose you will ever buy. And same with the rigid hose. It’s great but it’s not any good for the high end vacs. It’s like a 1 1/4” hose. But they don’t sell the good hoses for 2 1/2” it’s pretty lame.

not really. It depends on the brand most of the time, but the festool is the only one that seems to fit in all of my vacuum ports and has the ability to squeeze into most of my tools, the big difference is the end of the hose is rubber not hard plastic like most hoses.

germans consider 35 mm outside and aprox 27 mm inside as a standard. Most German tools (and some non german) will fit

You made conclusion only on your hose collection. But there are Nilfisk, Karcher, Starmix, Bosch. They all have 35 mm business end like festool, and all those vacuums have auto cleaning, that is mandatory for a shop. Ridgid does not has it.

Festoon hose do not have enough suction for me. They are too small for larger tools like table saws planners or miter saw.

Dewalt fan here but everything about their vacs is awful. So best suggestion is dont buy the Dewalt period. I also dont like their twist lock connector, its fine for bigger tools like mitersaw but its to big and bulky for smaller tools like sanders. Look into the cen-tec quick click if you use a lot of different tool brands. I buy the PET expandable cover and add it to my cen-tec hoses.

i'll definitely check that out, thanks. i agree, I don't like the bulky dewalt hose either, thats why I really only use it for concrete drilling. not my favorite vac, big, round and bulky. vacs should be square or rectangle so we can fit them in our trucks, vans and trailers better

Business 101: Competing manufacturers aren't usually interested in making it easier for customers to play amongst other brands. Most count on brand loyalists, but here DeWalt clearly wanted to force its customers into a product marriage, which is never a customer-friendly position, IMO. DeWalt made a bad choice by putting their bottom line ahead of customer convenience. Looking at most review videos on KZfaq, one can easily see the mediocre performance of Ridgid vacuums. Ridgid is a very popular brand, for sure, which is amazing considering how poorly it performs when compared to certain competitors. What good is a lifetime warranty if the vacuum's sucking ability is not all that impressive? Many science guys claim a smooth hose is always best for sawdust. Many say a wider hose is better for sawdust travel than a narrower hose, which makes me question Festool. $165 for a workshop vacuum hose? Really? Let's get real here. I'm surprised that for this video, you didn't even bother to clean your tools/accessories. I give a C for sloppy presentation.

Your DeWalt Vacuum / Hose was likely a certified HEPA vacuum system acceptable for lead abatement under OSHA guidelines. To meet the requirement, the components of the vacuum are tested together by a testing laboratory. To keep the certification, the operator must use only the components listed in the manifest or bill of materials. NO SUBSTITUTIONS! Note that buying a HEPA filter and installing the filter in a non-certified vacuum does not make the resulting system a HEPA system as there are likely small leakage paths on the exhaust side of the airflow path. This is one reason why industrial lead and asbestos abatement is expensive: the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) and OSHA have specific requirements and PPE requirements for the operator and ultimate disposal of the recovered material. Most vacuums don't meet these requirements or have certifications.

@@rightcoastsurf My understanding from the local AHJ is that the hose can be different, the issue is the exhaust side of the system. Internals of the system has to keep the particles in the container and filter assembly; the only leakage is through the filter itself. This is the reason a HEPA filter in a non-HEPA system isn't a HEPA system as there is no 'proof' the designed system doesn't leak in the exhaust path.

Looks like everyone but Dewalt "plays nice" to use your words. TAYLOR CRAFT WORKS River tables ( below) suggests that, "they should now be forced to be more compatible in my opinion." Aren't we glad they aren't running things! The way to get them to "play nice" is to quit buying Dewalt stuff. I quit about 10 years ago when their battery drills would stand up until you put a drill bit in the chuck, then they would fall over and break the drill bit. Haven't bought a Dewalt tool since. I'm sure you are glad you don't have a wall full of Dewalt tools. Oh, wait.... I guess for you Dewalt is fine as long as you stay away from the vacuum. I hate it when I get shocked from the hose too, but 4X the price to avoid static? How long is that Festool hose for $160. And inquiring minds what to know, how many houses in the US have burned to the ground because they aren't using Festool hoses? NFPA says the incidence is rare and not likely to happen except around explosive gasses. Then you don't even mention that the orange hose is smooth on the inside and the pressure drop for that hose is 30% of the other hoses. That smooth interior is also why it doesn't bend into the ridiculously tight radius that Festool does. Why is that even needed? I don't know if festool is smooth on the inside because I can't afford anything they sell so they don't exist as far as I'm concerned. If I'm going to pay $160 for a hose it better pick up anything. I do agree with you on one thing. Stick with Ridgid. Use a Cyclone separator, put a HEPA bag and a HEPA filter in it. $800 is too much to spend for a Festool vacuum.

For MOST people sure but pros are watching the vids too and there is a reason that the pros use it. They may not be 3x better but even that 1.5x increase in usability is clearly worth it to the people making 30k tables
