I decided to try out some new backpacking gear so I went on an overnight hammock backpacking adventure near Jerome Arizona. Little did I know how bad of a mistake it was to be this unprepared!! With a nearby recent bear attack and footsteps in the night right outside of my hammock I couldn't sleep one wink!! I hiked back to my truck at 3am worried about predators like bears and mountain lions!! This was the scariest night of my life solo hammock camping! This trip was a big mistake and I learned a lot of lessons.

You are funny Larry. I love how you can work yourself up. I could see the fear in your eyes when you thought you heard a noise outside of the hammock. I wonder if they discovered anything off about that bear during the autopsy. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the video!

1st get a copy of "The Ultimate Hang " an illustrated guide to hammock camping by Derek Hansen. For starters you need to get a good hammock that you can sleep in on the diagonal. Then make sure it is a double bottom one so the bugs can not bite you threw the bottom of it. Bug netting attached to the top. I've been hammock camping for over 60 years here in Florida and it's the only way to beat the heat for most of the year. I call tents "Sweat Lodges " since all I do in one is sweat. I don't go from later part of May to the 1st of October , there have been exceptions to that. One factor for hammocks ( besides the comfort ) is that critters can go under you and not in with you. I have had everything from Raccoons to Snakes and even one Gator go under my hammock and keep going. Nothing is louder then an Armadillo plowing threw the bushes by you. You would swear it's a T-Rex looking for a meal. Get 2 of them and you are sure it is the National Guards Tank coming at you. Ive actually had them walk into my tent when tent camping on rare occasions. Florida has a large Black Bear population and I have never been troubled by them , since I don't have food or cook in camp.

Welcome back Larry, sure have missed seeing your videos! Yeah, hammocks are good chillin’ out and nap taking, but not very comfy to sleep in. I can never sleep on my back and wouldn’t even attempt what you tried for that reason! Loved how you gingerly sat down in it, as if you weren’t 100% confident it was gonna hold you lol Anyways, happy to see/hear the bear didn’t come after the human in a burrito!!! A friend and I backpacked in the High Sierra (California) for 5 weeks back in 1974. We slept in hammocks the whole trip. Back then the only backpacking hammock was nylon mesh and we rigged up a rain fly for it. Our first few nights we were a little nervous about bears, but after a week we got over that. Only had one bear come into our camp and he was gnawing on my friend’s backpack. He left one piece of hard candy in a pocket. The bear came in about 4:00am. I told my friend if a bear comes in and I’m asleep don’t wake me. Of course he woke me! We started yelling and clapping and he walked away.

😂 great video. Had me in stitches for a good bit of it. Couple of things with a hammock. First, you don’t want your first time to be when you’re miles away from home or trailhead. 😂 Finding the correct lay is a personal one. Therefore practice is good. A diagonal lay in a gathered end hammock is best. A tarp is always a plus. An Underquilt helps add insulation below. Overall, great video. Enjoyed watching.

@@worklessenjoylifemore you’re welcome. I try to do that with any new gear I get so I can work out all the kinks. My biggest problem now is I have to find some way to cut out background noise. As I’ve gotten older high pitch noises wake me up often. Even the sound of dead leaves wake me up as they hit branches and the ground. It’s annoying. I’m thinking of getting ear plugs to see if that will help every single noise from waking me up at night 😂

Hey, sorry your hammock experience fell short. I’m a recent convert to hammocks… as a lifelong camper usually in tents (Boy Scouts), I always looked at them with skepticism but after trying it I find it’s the way to go, in temperate weather and if you’re prepared even in cool temps. As someone who normally sleeps on their stomach (but is trying to stop)- I find lying In the hammock very easy to do and actually it’s easier than sleeping on my back in my bed…maybe that’s because you’re somewhat forced into this position as u can’t really hang on your stomach. This leads me to my next point - the need for an insulating layer as your exposed back while hanging is subject to drafts and the inevitable temperature drop that occurs at night. This can be a sleeping bag, a blanket, something to go between the hammock and “you”. for me - it’s a therma-rest. If u just get in there with nothing thinking you’re good, you’ll likely freeze! Invest in a ‘hammock Fly’. It’s basically a shelter that is staked and tied over your hammock as a shelter. When precipitation is a possibility, u don’t want to gamble. Other than that, give it a shot in some different environments and you might change your mind! My band and I routinely visit areas in western NC and on the coast as well, but the scenic camping opportunities in NC are definitely more plentiful in the western part of the state. Im right in the middle of the state in Raleigh. As an Eagle Scout and then eventually being a Navy vet, I’ve been camping since I was about 11. I’m 43 now. I don’t even own a tent right now. Hammock and hammock fly. That is your shelter on the go! Happy camping !!🏕️

Hey, thanks so much for that! I really would like to be able to sleep in a hammock so I do think I’m going to try it again. But I think what I’m going to do is bring it with me when I have the truck camper just in case if I can’t sleep. I also do have a rain fly, but I just didn’t use it that night because there was pretty much zero chance of rain.

I don't think I could sleep in a hammock either. I have no problem sleeping in a tent. The first time I backpacked, I fell asleep on a bench. BTW, I went to Williams, and did the Gravity Roller Coaster you posted about and it was AWESOME! Their tubes there are a ton of fun also. Glad to see you posting again, I have missed seeing your videos.

Do you have any backpacking videos? That’s so awesome to hear you went on that roller coaster!! I thought it was a lot of fun too!! I saw those tubes and sorta wanted to go on them but there was only like 3 other customers there that morning, so everything looked closed 🤷 Thanks again for watching and always commenting!! It really does help 🤙

@@worklessenjoylifemore I forgot to mention that I am so glad that you didn't get sprayed by the skunk! Last time I went was about a week before I did my first KZfaq video. When the weather gets cooler, I will likely do a quick trip. I posted a couple of pictures on my community page, hopefully I get feedback. If you are ever back in Williams, make sure to try the tubes. They are so fast and fun! It was really busy when we went. We had to wait over an hour for the coaster, but it was still worth it. I look forward to seeing your next video and what you do next! Have a great week.

I’m with you. I could never sleep in that hammock. I would have high tailed it out of there, with the first noise I heard. There is only 2 things I’m afraid of, bears and bats 🦇. I go hiking a lot and bears are always on my mind. It’s a double edge sword for me. I go into the wilderness for peace and calming, but I’m always on edge with encountering a bear. It happened once and it wasn’t pleasant. ( 2 bears right on the trail in front of me as we turned the corner and me and my son just stood there and prayed that they would leave). They did leave about 10 min later but it was scary. Loved the video and loved that you weren’t afraid to show this side of reality 🤗

Oh wow yeah that would be scary!! I have seen bear while I’m out. It they were always so far away that they never bothered me. I feel the exact same way that I’m out there to relax but I’m constantly worried about bears 😆 I wonder if that sport ever goes away or if I just worry too much haha. Thank you for watching and taking the time to share your story!! 🙏😊

I heard that sleeping in a hammock is difficult. I'm a side sleeper and you were probably worried about getting sprayed by the skunk or attacked by a bear. Glad you and Mason are safe! You don't know until you try so good on you.

Your Hammock was the typical "banana hammock"...try looking more into a quality Hammock that allows you to lay more flat. Warbonnet Blackbird model is a great hammock...you sleep a little crossways, and it has a foot box that allows your body to be positioned more flat. Warbonnet also offers the "RidgeRunner" model which allows you to be completely flat. Otherwise, you may just be adaptable to a tent. Good on you, setting up a cook site 100-ft from your sleep site...that was good bear etiquette.

Great to see a video up from you. You know I've never been brave enough to try getting into a hammock let alone spending a night in one. I've seen KZfaq videos of folks using them. Guess you just have to hold your mouth right- hard to do when you're trying to sleep, lol I still enjoyed the video, Mason is just a champ following you without complaint ❤ They have pouches you can wear that Mason will fit in either front or back- kind of like what women carry babies in. You could hike faster and not worry about something hurting him. Just do some more research dear, you're next trip will be better. Carry bear spray, just having it will ease your mind. Stay cool, stay safe and GOD bless

Hey Alice!! Thanks for hanging around until I finally posted again 😂 I can’t believe the bad luck I had this last month with not being able to finish any videos! I have four videos started but none finished enough to make a full video. I might do a video talking about the stories behind those failed videos and just show the footage I do have. My Mom actually gave me a pink dog carrier like what you’re talking about 😂 I’m gonna have to be really brave to sport that thing in public or on camera 🤣. Thanks for always watching and commenting 😊

Just study on them a bit, maybe you can add to/ use the footage in the future or as you said talk about what/where you wanted them to go. Creativity is fickle, sometimes it ebbs and flows, sometimes you hit a wall with it. You always do such quality work and great drone work as well, it will come together dear. Until then we're happy to wait. Hugs to Mason

The lady on the news flabbergasted me when she said black bears are docile. I live in Northern Ontario Canada and while the black bear mayapppear docile they are VERY unpredictable and can and will attzck without provocation. More likely to attack than grizzlies. What she sai 16:44 d gives people a sense of unrealistic easiness regarding the black bear. Certainly dont panic when confronting a black bear but i would advise this lady to talk to her local Wildlife authorities and they can school her on the proper way and steps to conduct herself should she find herself in an unavoidable confrontation with a black bear. Beleive me they can and have attacked people. They are not docile they are unpredictable. 🇨🇦
