Well... a computer is not actually needed, you could do it on a tablet or phone, but that's being a bit pedantic! The ZUMSpot is set up via a web interface, so as long as you can get to a web browser of some kind, you can set it up. The video that Katy did here is not really a tutorial but more of a introduction to the product. I recommend this document to help set up the Pi-Star system: amateurradionotes.com/images/1-Playing_with_Pi-Star.pdf

Good Video! The only things I would have added was how you got from the PiStar Digital Voice Dashboard MIABC to the configuration page. And how you went from Wireless set up to General Configuration. As a seasoned hotspot user I know how to get to those places but a nubbie may be left wondering how you did it. Also, in the URL section, if you put Auto instead of manual, it will automatically connect to your QRZ page, that is already there. Aside from that, a very good video. All the best!

Hi. I do not have a Yaesu digital radio, so I may not be the best person to answer that question. However, I found this website which explains what that function does, so maybe it'll help you: ysf.2ip.ee/pi-star-wiresx-passtrough.php It says, "This feature allows you to change Brandmeister DMR Talk Groups thru wires-x interface from your transceiver (FT2DR / FT3DR) in your local YSF2DMR pi-star based config." Whether that's something you need, or not, I don't know. If you put "pi star wires x passthrough" into the Google search you'll get lots of info about it, and some videos on what it does.

Katie: Great video. Question....I have a Yaesu FT3D and an AnyTone DMR HT. Is it possible to have the ZUMspot work in two modes simultaneously?
@HamRadioOutlet
@HamRadioOutlet 3 жыл бұрын
Simultaneously, no. You can set it up for different modes (eg DMR and D-STAR), but it won't be active on both at the same time. When the ZUMspot is inactive, if you key up a D-STAR radio, it'll switch to that mode. Later, if you key up a DMR radio, it'll switch to that mode. You can configure "hangtime" settings to change how long it will remain in each of the modes after it has been idle. You wouldn't be able to key down on a D-STAR radio and a DMR radio simultaneously and have the ZUMspot relay both signals.

after you get it setup do you still need the computer and can you pair it with wifi hot spot like at&t. and take it mobile?
@HamRadioOutlet
@HamRadioOutlet 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, sorry for the long delay in replying. You probably know your answer by now, but this might help someone else. Once it is set up and working, any changes to the configuration are done via the same configuration webpage you saw in the video. To get to that ZUMspot configuration web page, you have to connect to the same wifi that the ZUMspot is connected to. You can use your computer, phone or tablet to connect to it. Once connected, you can change the ZUMspot wifi settings to those used by your phone's personal hotspot. The ZUMspot will then be using your phone's wifi. When you want to change it back to your home wifi you'll connect back to the ZUMspot configuration page, change the wifi settings back to the home wifi and you're back in business. The configuration page cannot store more than one wifi configuration, so every time you want to put it on a different wifi network, you have to make that change.

the frequency you programmed in the zumspot - when you program on the HT - is it plain simplex? no tones, etc? set to FM?
@HamRadioOutlet
@HamRadioOutlet 3 жыл бұрын
The radio must be a digital radio, one that transits data (D-STAR, DMR, Fusion etc). The radio would be set to the DIGITAL mode you configured on the hotspot. The digital radio is programmed to match the settings on the hotspot. If you programed the hotspot to use a tone or a Color Code, then your HT has to use the same tone//Color Code. The hotspot transits and receives on the same frequency, so yes, it's simplex. Most digital radios require you to set both the transmit and receive frequencies separately. In this case, you'd set them to the same frequency.

Katie's not here anymore. The video was really just an introduction to digital modes using the ZUMspot. It didn't cover how to set up the radio. If you were using DMR I'd tell you to make sure that the talk groups you want to hear are included in the currently active Receive Group Call List (or whatever it might be called in your radio). You change talk groups using the radio. On a DMR radio, for example, you might have different Contacts/Talk Groups programmed in a specific zone, so all you do, is turn the dial on the radio to select a different talk group and key the mic.

I'm running Windows 7 and the Zumspot is a Model 7 ver2.2. No luck! Can't talk to the Zumspot with the router powered up. Would flashing an updated OS likely help?
@HamRadioOutlet
@HamRadioOutlet 2 жыл бұрын
The Nextion works with any device that can connect to 2.4GHz wifi, so the fact that you're on Windows 7 makes no difference at all. I've configured mine using an Android cell phone, an iPad and a Windows computer - It just needs wifi and a web browser. The only issue I see, is that your web browser might be too old and not support the most modern web conventions, but that is unlikely. I'll leave the "you really should update to a modern OS that's still supported and more secure"-discussion for another post! I assume that you are trying to get into the device for the first-time setup? You mentioned your router - for the first time setup you have to disconnect from your home wifi and connect to the Zumspot's wifi (a direct connection). In other words, you connect to the Zumspot as if it *was* your router. The Zumspot creates its own wifi network when it hasn't been able to connect to an existing wifi network (like your home wifi) for 3 minutes. So, best steps to take are: Turn off your router. Turn on wifi on your computer. Turn on the Zumspot. Wait at keast 3 minutes. Keep scanning for new networks on your computer's wifi. Look for the Zumspot's wifi network ("pi-star-setup"). Connect your computer's wifi to the Zumspot's wifi network (Username: pi-star Password: raspberry). From there, you can start configuring the Zumspot by pointing a web browser to "pi-star/" (if that doesn't work, try "pi-star.local" or "192.168.50.1"). Once you can see the Zumspot dashboard, you can start configuring it. I recommend this website for help: amateurradionotes.com/pi-star.htm

For a tutorial in how to get the ZUMspot Elite 3.5 up and running, please follow the link in the video description, above. Changing the screen display type does not affect the ZUMspot's ability to transmit/receive, only what is displayed on the screen. @@reynolds26n You are correct.... it needs a callsign to configure it. And there's no such thing as just listening... the ZUMspot transmits it's audio to your radio (and any others in the area), so you need a license for your ZUMspot to legally transmit. @HamRadioOutlet
@HamRadioOutlet 3 жыл бұрын
@@jimadams7638 Actually, the code plug is for the radio, not the "hotspot" (ZUMspot). You configure the hotspot just as Katie did in the video - set the mode(s), the frequency the hotspot will listen/transmit on, your callsign etc. On the radio, you'd set it up however you like, but on the Anytone AT878UV that I use, I have a "Channel" defined for the ZUMspot (438.xxx). I have a list of contacts/talk groups that I check-in on frequently, and they are grouped in a Zone that I called "ZUMspot". Now, I can dial to the "ZUMspot" Zone, spin the dial at the top of the radio to select the talk group I want, and key the mic. The radio has "promiscuous mode" too so I can type in a talk group (eg "91"), key up and the ZUMspot will switch to that talk group.

How do you chose what frequency to input at the setup
@HamRadioOutlet
@HamRadioOutlet 5 ай бұрын
Basically, you look at the 70cm band plan (Google is your friend) and monitor your chosen frequency for a while to see if you're interfering with any local 70cm stations, as stated in the video at 4:10. You should not choose a frequency that's on the satellite sub-band or weak signal sub-band as your transmissions could seriously impact others. Your hotspot's output is very low power, but it is still a repeater, so you could place it in a the repeater sub-band, on an unused frequency... but be aware that the radio you're using with the hotspot is generally using much more power, with a better antenna, and therefore has further reach - which means it could be interfering with a station/repeater much further away. It's possible that a new repeater could be placed on your chosen frequency at a later date! I use 438.160MHz, which is in the ATV sub-band, but that's only because there are a ton of 440 repeaters in my area and not much ATV, and due to my location, my 70cm hotspot signal is attenuated very rapidily. We have a more up to date video which is a step-by-step installation video, unlike this introduction video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5iSqsuW0Lm7mo0.htmlsi=Kx6EHJD47Pni6lra. You should know that the software now provided at the ZUMradio website has changed, and is more efficient than "pi-star", but the steps are the same.

There is a worldwide shortage of Raspberry Pi boards due to the chip shortage. We have many of the ZUMSpots on order from the manufacturer. We'll get them as soon as they are made. I would recommend placing an order so that you get yours as soon as possible. If you wait for it to show up on the website, you could be waiting much longer as we always fulfill back orders before advertising products for sale on the website.

@HamRadioOutlet
@HamRadioOutlet Жыл бұрын
Depending on where you were in the setup, you may have not yet configured the wifi on the ZUMspot. At the beginning of the setup, the ZUMspot creates its own network (several *minutes* after booting) that you have to connect your computer to. If you don't wait long enough, it won't have had time to create the network. Later in the setup, you configure wifi so that the ZUMspot connects to you home wifi. All of that is to say, you may be looking for the wrong network! Regardless, this video is not a tutorial on how to setup the ZUMspot, it's an introduction to the ZUMspot. A full tutorial is available here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5iSqsuW0Lm7mo0.html If all else fails, do what the tutorial says and download a new copy of the ZUMspot software from the HRO website, write it to the SD card and redo the configuration. Step-by-step instructions are in the video.

Wifi is used by the hotspot to connect to your internet. Put the hotspot somewhere where it can talk reliably to your wifi router. However, YOU talk to the ZUMspot via your digital radio, not via wifi. Your 440MHz signals travel MUCH further than wifi. With your digital radio set to its lowest power settings you can walk down the street and still get into the hotspot! You cannot change the power settings of the ZUMspot's transmitter.

It comes with a USB AC/DC converter (2.4A) so as long as you provide it with the right DC voltage and current over a USB cable, it'll work. I believe it requires 5V, but you would have to check to make sure - don't take my word for it! :-)

Except it does go out over radios across the world. It is just like having a personal repeater at your home. Highly suggest doing a little research and seeing exactly how much real radio is involved in using a hotspot. I am old school and prefer HF but DMR has a lot to offer and theres tons of activity compared to local analog repeaters. Now I can access thousands of repeaters from my own personal repeater. Its a lot of fun which is about the only requirement for my hobbies. But indeed is most definitely radio. Radio on my end (even if its 3 feet) and most definitely radio on the other end. The TN State wide system lets me activate 30 repeaters across the state from my HT. That lets me talk to old friends and make new ones even though there is no activity on my local repeater. To each his own but I would never knock another guys modes or the way he chooses to enjoy the hobby. I like HF SSB, CW, PSK, THOR, Olivia, FT8, JS8Call, you name it. There are times when each different mode or band is perfect for whatever I am trying to do. If I only used SSB and never used another mode, it would really limit the amount of fun I have!

@@JimmyLewisDuvall and without the internet it’s not going anywhere. It’s a hybrid at best. Not my cup of tea. To much delay, poor pinched audio. We have fusion and dmr repeaters over hear and they all sound the same except Voice Wide mode on Fusion which is barely an improvement. Glad your enjoying it but routing nodes and endless software updates keep me away. There are groups of guys doing Mesh around hear that tie up the repeaters all day trouble shooting various digital schemes when they have a “mesh phone” and a RF chat window. Why is that? Well it’s bc an analog FM repeater is faster, clearer and a superior form of conversation.

What about hams who cannot put up HF antennas, but want to work the world? What about hams who can't afford an HF rig and everything else that goes along with it? What about hams who want the convenience of an HT that talks on local repeaters, but also works the world? What about hams who want to embrace new technology because it's fun and exciting and opens new doors? What about hams who are stuck at home due to illness or injury and who can't get out to build, tune, change or erect antennas, but who still love the "party line" experience ham radio offers? What about emergency situations where communication outside the state is necessary and linked repeaters can get traffic to and from other states quickly and efficiently? The internet exists. Why shouldn't hams interface with it and remain relevant in this century?
@JimmyLewisDuvall
@JimmyLewisDuvall 2 жыл бұрын
Most hams who leave comments like that are super insecure and afraid they wont be able to set the hotspot and DMR radio up. I was not a fan of DMR until I tried it and it is just like using a repeater. Matter of fact, it allows me to access my local repeater from my hometown. So when I am not busy on CW or PSK31 or someother "real" radio mode, I can use my UHF (notice that is real radio) and my personal repeater to talk on repeaters across the world. Don't be scared to try new things. If you are, then ham radio just might not be for you. There is something for everyone in this wonderful hobby and if you don't like that you should keep your uneducated opinion to yourself. And a huge thanks to HRO for this video, its the one that convinced me to give it a try even though I was intimated by the process of setting up a hotspot and DMR HT. I was on the air the first night and have been every single day since then. I even bought another Zumspot for my middle school classroom and use it during my science lessons on amateur radio.
