In this episode I give a video tour of my latest hand carved slate gravestone, a Roman Style Ledger stone which will lie flat. Drawing inspiration from original stones we saw in Greece and Israel from the 1st century AD, this stone has a classic look.
For a copy of my book on 18th century original gravestones see this link here pumpkintown-108720.square.sit...
I carve slate stone by hand with chisel and mallet, a centuries old technique that is still applicable in today's world. See more of my work on our website here at pumpkintownprimitives.com/

David, I noticed the age of the woman right away which is surprising since I am terrible at math! For some reason, I guess like you said having to do with the carving technique and the light, all those letters look three dimensional as though they were raised instead of carved. Great work!

Beautiful work as usual. By the way, I really enjoyed the book. I was actually going through it again last night comparing the different lettering styles.

Thank you! Original letters to me are so much more interesting than modern letters. Especially the works of Codner and Emmes

I agree completely. It’s nice to see a carver’s individuality on a stone carved eons ago. It brings a little life into something associated with death. Speaking of life, it was especially interesting to me how associations were made between gravestone symbols and scripture in your book. I realize that creating a book like that is a labor of love because you’d definitely not get rich off of it, but if you ever put out another one I’d definitely be a buyer.

Love the bow tie. In a Seersucker suit, no less. Let those others sweat in wool, in the summer. To other readers. Real bow ties should always look slightly askew or is it very slightly untidy, as to be not perfect, nor neat. Like to think of it, like a large flower bloom, pleasing to the eye, because like a real drummer in a southern garage band, vs a drum machine, slight variations in presentation. You need to try a butterfly bow tie, my favorite. But I digress. Are the letters carved with an absolute V, or is one side of the V more vertical to give a shadow surface? Do you have a video craving V lettering on slate? We live in an area with Revolutionary soldier graves and older, even a U boot crew, will have to try the mirror trick to help read some of the older ones. I assume you have been to Thunderbolt, GA, Bonaventure cemetery, absolutely lovely, plus the city has a cemetery accommodation. This is just in case if you're visiting Savannah, Georgia, and die, you can enjoy southern Savannah hospitality while you wait for relatives to retrieve you. Seriously, their claim to fame. Bonaventure is in the book, chapter Sleeping amongst the Tombs, as I recall, might be off on the chapter title, A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf, Book by John Muir, rather cool to visit and try to imagine where he camped out in the cemetery.

Wow this is a great commentary. Thank you. Yes the V Cut is indeed equal on both sides. I have not been to Bonaventure. Each time we are in Savannah it seems we are in a rush, but it is on my list. Bow tie is real and hand tied and is silk, dyed by my wife Renee with Indigo! Shocked it looks as tidy as it does on this video, truly.

Beautiful work, David! I did not see any guide lines inscribed on this particular piece. How did you manage that? Is that piece of slate native to SC? Must have cost a fortune. I am reading your book and I really enjoy it. It has great background info on the stones and the carvers. Makes visiting a grave yard/cemetery much more meaningful.

Jim thank you! There are still scribe lines but very very lightly there. Yes this stone by itself did cost a small fortune! Thanks for encouragement about book also.
