In this video I am carving a big reclamied York paving slab to make a house sign for Losehill Farm. I will be going through each stage to show how this sign is made.

Thank you. I have been carving stone for 6/7 years but working with stone now for 14 years, started as a dry stone Waller around the Peak District

Hi, thank you for watching. I definitely can carve stationary stone. There are already a couple of videos on my channel featuring a house name in a gate post in Edale, as well as a couple of very large stones for farms. Both stones weigh at least a tonne each. I hope this information helps!

Hi,is there a reason for the hammer being round ?

I have many hammers, not all are round, but most are. The reason for a round hammer is that it’s more precise, offers me greater control, and prevents my chisels from forming flat spots on the striking head. I hope that answers your question.

What stone types do you find easiest to carve on? How would you asses marble? Thanks!

Hi Pulleczech, The easiest is definitely a Maltese limestone or a Portland limestone. It’s very soft, easy to carve, and you can be very quick. My favorite to work with is Derbyshire sandstone and Welsh slate. I have worked with marble but not for a couple of years now, and I would say the biggest piece of advice I could give you is to have the right tools and keep them sharp.

What sort of paint do you use?

For this sign, the paint is black water-based painted then the whole sign has two coats of weather seal protecting the stone and the paint, I hope that helps

Source of your stencils please?

Hi Beth, we make the stencils ourselves using a program called Cricut. We design them up, going back words and forwards with the customer if needed. Then when we are ready, we set it to cut on card. I do plan on making a video about using the Cricut just haven’t got around to it as yet
