Flare cut engraving is one of the most exciting and beautiful techniques to cut. For this project I chose to engrave a traditional scrollwork motif with some intertwining and overlapping elements. Please leave any comments or questions you have about this beautiful engraving technique.

This was one of very few videos which displayed high quality cutting, great narration with the uninitiated in mind, explanatory reasons how, why etc included. The design is unlike majority of many viewed by me. It carries detailed scroll work with added, well placed flourish which enhanced the design through stepping out of the routine, regimented scroll. The interlocking work added great flavour of originality to this work. Unsure whether this engraving was on soft or hard steel. Anyone know please?

I've just tried several types of 304 stainless steel and what do you think is the hardness code for the stainless steel usually used for carving, for example for necklace pendants or knife handles.

304 is inherently difficult. I have cut it and it cut very well and then the very next project I was constantly resharpening. Stainless like all steel can vary in hardness so it helps to have a supplier who is consistent. When it comes to knife manufacturers, most are not exactly consistent so you just have to hope you get something that cuts.
