Hand making a sculpted leaf and scroll wedding ring.

In this video I take you through the process of making a sculpted leaf and scroll ring. It's made from recycled gold and hand made from start to finish.
To make this ring I melt some scrap gold and forge it out into a plain band then use a combination of engraving and chasing techniques to sculpt the design.
I'm Andrew Ashcroft, a master goldsmiths and engraver. I specialise in commission made wedding and engagement rings but I love all sorts of metal work and plan to explore more in future videos.

No I hand sculpt them like this every time so each one is different.

Thankyou! Really enjoyed that. Noticed at one point you used a long thin pink attachment with a rounded tip, was this a fine sander? Never seen this before.

Hi, yes its a ceramic abrasive that you can shape as you need it. I cant remember where I got them from A german company at the IJL show last time it was on I think.

Thats nice...can i ask, that mini chaser, can it be made from an old carbide burr, of somehting less brittle like HSS...too..cool torch i have a smiths, but looking at an Orch z..but yours look good...Thx

Hi, yes any old burr will do. I tend to use carbide but it's not essential:)

The only reason I use carbide it that I work in titanium as well which does need it:)

@@ashcroftjewellery Cheers Andrew, im learning, but all my stock is Carbide, i lucked in when in Germany and bought a load which was meant to be 2mm square but was miss ground 1.89 ...made my own templates...cant wait to get started

Great:) make sure you have good ventilation and a face mask when grinding carbide, or anything really, but particularly carbide. It's nasty on the lungs.

Is hot hammering better with gold/silver? Or hot/ heated hammering?

No you work them cold. If it starts to work harden you can anneal it to soften again the continue working.

No problem. It works well on 9ct, and even on 18 if applied to the ring warm.

@@deathruddlesdeathruddles5438 Originally I learned hand push engraving and hammer and chisel changing and raising. The GRS system just makes it less like hard work:)
