Hand Engraving Quick Tip #4 - Wax Transfers

In this Quick Tip Episode we'll learn how to use the old school transfer wax technique to move an image from one engraved master plate to another practice plate. The castings used in this video to demonstrate the technique can be used by the beginner and intermediate engraver to transfer a set of clean backbones or scroll outline to another plate for practicing cutting both backbones and shading. Hand engraving starts with knowing how to draw clean scrolls. This set will give the beginner a feel for what a clean scroll backbone looks like. Along with an example of simple, well balanced scroll design.

Steeve Martial castings are one of the handiest engraving reference tools a beginner can have. I have a large collection in my own shop.

Hey Lane, which method is best method to transfer an image onto chrome? A primary cover for example? Any suggestions?

Random question about something I've noticed: when you were engraving the gun, it wasn't centered in your vise, but the point of rotation always seemed to be dead center to the scope. How do you do that? I have a hell of a time keeping things I'm engraving in my field of view. I love your videos, and can't wait to see more!!

The vise itself isn’t turning. It sits on a turn table do I can slide the vise anywhere I need to center it and the turntable spins with the scope centered over it.

A quicker way is to just use a smoke print. Have you given that a try at all?

Never used smoke prints as a transfer method but I've made plenty of them. It's one of the dozens of methods I know of.

How do I transfer an image on one side of the knife to the other side using wax transfer?

Adam Pierce to do this is hit and miss with wax. You need to lift the image with tape, apply another piece of tape to the first one to lift some of the wax off that piece. It will then be a mirror image. I rarely do this because it’s difficult to get much of an image to show up. Much better to use computer software to mirror your artwork and use printer transfer technique. That being said I hand draw 99% of what I do. Being able to draw it by hand is an essential skill.

@@MasterEngraverTV Thank you for the response. I tried several methods after I posted the question and actually successfully did exactly what you suggested. It worked but required two people as the tape is difficult to pull apart without damaging the image created by the wax. The photograph and laser printout was my final choice but I didn't need to do it. Using hand drawn, as you well know, is difficult to reproduce an exact copy of an image that has been free handed on one side of an object.

I am a hobby engraver, I have been using a head set. I am soon to be 79 years old. I have soll some of my work. I won't to move up to a microscope. I do fire arms and money clips. Can recommend a microscope?
