Thank you so much! I recently got one of these from my 9-5 as a "Thank You" gift for my year of service. I was a bit timid about the quality but when you are just using a bench planer, anything else is a God send. This video has given me the courage to unbox this and I feel this table build will finally be done soon. Great job showing the accessories and how to properly use this. I am glad to be a new subscriber to your channel.

Thank you for the run-through on this tool. I’m a newbie, and I consider it a huge plus when someone does a demo that isn’t perfection necessarily, but shows you what to expect right out of the gate. i've used a lot of electric hand planes over the years and only my bosch has had a fence that i actually trust. that being said, a square block of wood about the length of the planer double stick taped to the heal sole makes a very servicable and quick fence. i've used that method pretty much every time i needed to rebate construction lumber where i'm not sure about what fasteners i might hit. i'd rather trash a $40 wen rather than my $180 bosch.

You're meant to use the thin metal flap, near the back of the fence attachment, as a handle. You use that to push the fence into the wood, stopping you from weeble-wobbling around on the edge of the thin board.

I have a door rubbing the sagging top frame/jamb of a door. Is a planer a good idea or better to sand?
@ProjectsForAllReviews
@ProjectsForAllReviews 8 ай бұрын
Swelling, ill fitting doors it’s the main reason I own one of these. Much easier than sanding if you need to take off a fair amount. I find taking off a very small amount at a time and making many passes gets the best result. Good luck and thanks for watching!

The blades on the first one, and the replacement WEN sent me were not straight. One of the blade set screws stripped and they sent me a free replacement, which was nice of them. But even after adjusting the blades on the replacement to get them as evenly as I could, it still would not cut flat. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I gave up on trying to use it.

Same issue for me…My Dad (who won’t be around much longer) flew out to visit and helped build a large window bench top with me. After he left I only had to plane it, sand it, and stain. I bought used fence board, 4 inches wide. I want to get the grey off of the boards so I can repurpose them as walls inside a van. So far I’ve sanded about 8 of them down with a palm sander, waaay too much work. Would this planer do the job? Would it be pretty even if I had to do a few passes to accommodate the wider fence board?
@ProjectsForAllReviews
@ProjectsForAllReviews Жыл бұрын
Hello! A hand planer will be much more efficient than a palm sander but will still require a little technique and finesse to get the grey off. Planer and palm sander after will probably get good quick results. Check out my first ever vid for before and after cedar fence pickets with a bench planer. Good luck! 03:30 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5hkrbV42NKapGw.html

@@ProjectsForAllReviews so I’m just new to woodworking, can I ask, would a belt sander be better or a planer?
@ProjectsForAllReviews
@ProjectsForAllReviews Жыл бұрын
Both would work. The hand planer IMO would work better with the palm sander to clean up any lines left on the board. The planer only works if you have a loose board with both ends exposed for a start and stop point. The belt sander will remove material anywhere you put it and works better when the boards are attached to something and secure. Belt sander will tend to want to take off in one direction and throw the loose material in the other direction. I used a Makita belt sander to remove multiple layers of paint and varnish from my wood porch. I think it’s best suited for that kind of task. I hope this makes sense. Let me know

David, The hand planer front shoe is v short; it simply follows existing hi/lo spots and replicates them - as you noted. Proper tool is a Jointer with a long table (24"+). Alternate is table saw with long fence (eg, Unisaw), but jointer is best.

I’ve never used an electric planner to try to achieve a straighter or flatter surface. It is however a great way to remove a small amount of material across an edge. Thanks for watching!
@NaturallyMissMeka

So is it just this planer that you shouldn't cut across the grain with?. I just watched another carpenter cut across the grain with a Makita planer, and it worked just fine. Now I am confused because I am hanging a slab door into an existing jam and need to plane off a little off the bottom, which will go across the grain. I don't wanna buy this if I can't use it for that purpose, and I don't wanna buy the expensive Makita one. Someone please let me know.
@ProjectsForAllReviews
@ProjectsForAllReviews Жыл бұрын
People do it but I was taught never to plane across end grain. You also risk damaging the door. Better to use a circ saw to cut off the small amount from the end of the door. Use a track saw or straight edge clamped to get it straight. Safer and probably easier to get a good result. Thanks for watching!

It's a pity the guard isn't as sturdy to give straight rabbits. As you suggested in the review with the skil planer the guard is better engineered. I think you could fix the guard on this one by spot-welding a strip of sheet metal between the pieces of the guard to provide additional support. I was looking at the equivalent Porter Cable planer and that guard has that support..same as the skil one. The only thing the porter planer doesn't include the adjustable rabbit depth stop.

The depth adjuster is crude. After hours of frustration I removed the knob and dropped the front plate. I shimmed the plate to make a fixed depth of somewhere between 1/64 and 1/32. The design, while similar to other lower cost planers is terrible due to a way less than precision fit. I have spent more the the cost difference in minimum wage time trying to get a reliable adjustable depth(cuts ok at fixed depth). This machine is not a quicker way to plane than by hand when pieces are ruined. I am not a satisfied buyer. Perhaps I’ll epoxy a good fitting sleeve to the area of the body that is so flimsy it can’t be expected to support the front shoe and then maybe not. The next will not be a WEN
