Build Article: craftedworkshop.com/building-... In this woodworking project, I'm building a hand tool tote using hand cut dovetails. This project was built so that I could bring a few hand tools with me to my week-long course at the John C. Campbell Folk School ( bit.ly/folkschool ). Enjoy!

Every time I watch a new Crafted Workshop video, I see at least one thing that makes me say "I want that!". Today, it's the jointer. I would love to have a good jointer as it's much more difficult to get true cuts without one. I did some dovetail joints this weekend (so this video was perfect timing) and there's no doubt it's a lot of work but it's so good looking (and strong) when complete. Also, happy to see you talked about the grain direction. I've learned about that the hard way.

So glad you addressed the grain direction. I was looking at it pretty funny, but then stopped to think about it going the other way and realized that would make the dovetails week. Now I have to go back to my Fine Woodworking mags to find the Tool Tote they built and see which way the grain direction is running.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 7 жыл бұрын
Yea, it was a bit of a conundrum. The way to handle it would be to make a curved handle so the sides are more narrow. But I didn't feel like doing that!
@PowderhornWild
@PowderhornWild 7 жыл бұрын
yep, if you went the other way, you'd have to dovetail it to the bottom and attach the sides in a different way. I think these little conundrums caused by wood grain orientation are one of the things that make woodworking so interesting.

Well, I can sure as hell use some hand tool experience, none of my uploaded projects did work out the first time! And I also need a tool box, for the moment I keep my tools in a shoe box... I do like that the chisels have there own place to go, on a kitchen knife style of way. I hope you understand what I mean, i am bad at explaining... Maybe I should copy your design... just kidding, I would modify it to my needs! But you gave some good inspiration!

You didn't mention an adjustable square or the dovetail guide when you outlined the tools that went into the tote. Obviously, you needed something to set the angle. I agree with the revision in wood choice. The problem (at the outset) is that dovetails go in end grain. If the side is "tall", then the board has to be wide. This is a poor choice in a project like this. Your proposed revision was a good one. I would use 12mm Baltic birch plywood. It dovetails well and is super pretty and super strong. Thanks for the build...
@craftedworkshop

Had KZfaq on random play and you came up. Nice build, attractive 'carry-all' as they were called at my trade school. You may eant to consider orientating your grain around 90° for the ends. Likely not an issue in your shop but if I were to take that on site etc a knock to the end could snap the skinny section leading to the handle. You didnt mention in the video (or I missed it) is that why there appears to be three ply glued to the inside under the handle holes? Obviously start typing before the 8:53 mark lol. All good.

great tool tote sir, awesome design, just subed. how do you like those narex chisels? I'm in the market for some new chisels and am looking at stanley sweethearts, woodcraft store brand, i believe woodriver and narex the imperical sized
@craftedworkshop

Thanks man! I'm digging the chisels, but I don't really have any experience with other chisels. I did have the pleasure of using a Lie-Nielsen corner chisel during the class last week, and it was just a totally different experience. That said, that one chisel cost as much as my set of 7 Narex Bevel-Edge chisels.

@jaimeclifton9078
@jaimeclifton9078 7 жыл бұрын
Crafted Workshop - Once upon a time I used to ride a bike with stabilisers but I didn't count myself as being able to "ride" a bike until those stabilisers came off. There comes a point in woodworking when it's less about craft & skill and more so about the operation of tooling....
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 7 жыл бұрын
+Jaime Clifton a plane is a jig for a chisel essentially, do you consider that cheating?
@jaimeclifton9078
@jaimeclifton9078 7 жыл бұрын
Crafted Workshop - I didn't say you were cheating. My remark is one of standpoint but jigs can be had for nearly every aspect of woodworking. At what point do you stop woodworking and simply processing wood through machines? Anyone can read a set of instructions..... A plane takes a considerable amount of skill to sharpen, set up and use well - you'd struggle to do the job it facilitates without one.....

What world do you live in where you think making a comment like this is OK? I just don't get people like you.

I suppose he's expressing his opinion, i.e. he doesn't like the appearance of your ear-rings, whereas, clearly, you do. In today's world, I think we can sometimes be too inclined to think that others should not express an opinion which we do not like. I am thin, and old ... and if someone pointed this out, I would agree with them. On the other hand, if, as some people do, someone objected to my wearing socks with sandals, I write them off as 'mistaken,' (i.e. 'stuff you!) Thanks for the upload. Nicely done.

They are not earrings, they're earring plugs or just plugs. You don't take them off, you take them out. You really should not what you are hating on.
