As suggested by one of the commenters in our community, this video is the other book-end of Kirsten's earlier Thoreauvian simple living story with Diana and Michael Lorence's unelectrified, timeless tiny home in California.
(Re)Watch it here: • Thoreauvian simple liv...
When Sebastian and Celine Parker bought their San Francisco home, they needed to turn the space above the garage into an apartment to help pay the mortgage. As a designer and woodworker Sebastian spent two years carefully designing each piece of furniture so the 460-foot-space would feel open and light.
Hoping to create physical space that would give rise to an uncluttered mental state, he left a lot of empty space in this tiny flat. Sebastian is very influenced by a Japanese aesthetic: he created shoji screens for the octagonal windows, and he fiercely protects negative space. "It allows for space creatively, so I feel like I can really think clearly if I'm in a space like this".
High ceilings and clerestory windows flood the place with light so that each piece of furniture takes on a life of its own. Sebastian has even named some of the pieces, like the two armoires that he calls Laurel and Hardy, for their radically different shapes.
He built a kitchenette and an all-wood bathroom using lumber from an old hot tub. The build happened after hours spent sitting and observing the space. In this way, the home is never done, and he expects to continue building to suit an evolving environment. For Sebastian, this is an ideal, though unrealistic, setup for everyday life as a father.
"When I was a bachelor, this is how I lived. I just didn't have all the custom furniture, but I've had to learn to function in this world without this because I have two kids with very different ideas of how space should be inhabited." He still escapes here for respite.

Agreed. I loved the Innermost House video, perhaps the first I saw on Kirsten’s channel (I’m a Thoreau fan), and I was struck by a similarity of spirit between both the owners of the homes and the videos themselves. Many thanks, Kirsten.

While this level of minimalism is so beautiful, it takes an incredible amount of discipline to maintain it (perhaps that’s part of the attraction). I find it very inspiring. Thanks for featuring this artist/builder/philosopher! ❤

No, completely doable and the practice simple when it's your default mode. This is similar to my place, with less plants. It's all about mindset. I cant tolerate clutter. Nearly everything in the place is intentional, functional, out of need not want. Therapeutic and stress preventative. It's a unique way of life. Linda's right, the onset when developing your minimalism does require discipline. Once you "get it" and experience how it's so beneficial, not as much discipline needed. You become uninterested in any other way of living.

An absolutely beautifully peaceful retreat. My one criticism is of the tiny stools at the dining table. I hate benches, or any seat that does not hold one and let one lean back and relax. Eating should be a prolonged, relaxed affair, rather than a balancing act. Whilst beautifully crafted, they are made for perching, rather than for settling in. (Not enough work space either for the cook! And THIS coming from someone with a tiny kitchen).

Love the minimalism, I remodeled and decorated 2 suites for a Bed & Bath above a Bistro I created. I put only what you would need in the space like this fellow. (0% of the people that rented it, loved the concept. The other 10% said it felt sparse. I said, I left room for the 'people' to fill the space with themselves! Fabulous craftsman with wood, very creative! The black locust stave designed chair is standard operating procedure in many parts of Africa. You find them everywhere! Many different woods & designs. I have the 2 piece design chair currently in my possession made out of wood and white cotton woven string in a pattern. The 2 pieces are pulled apart and leaned against walls in homes, then when needed they are quickly assembled , usually done in 2 planks. My beautiful wood & woven design I picked up on the Island of Lamu, off the coast of Kenya. Again, just gorgeous furniture! Bravo!

Very interesting, thanks. Does the design/type of chair have a name? I might try and make one for my garden, I like the idea of the two pieces pulling apart for storage.

" Not everything is about convenience, its about creating a space that gives you space. It doesn’t try to tell you how to live. A place where you can be, and be at peace. " This man knows! So very well articulated as to why I have recently had such a difficult time finding a space to rent. I'd gather most people and living situations here in the states do not take these thoughts into consideration - but rather welcome you to your new prison cell. Thank you for sharing this!

I grew up in parts of the east where the Shakers settled, and have loved their work since childhood. My great grandfather and his father ran a water-powered sawmill in Ohio, and many Amish frequented the mill. As a child, I got to feed their horses carrots, and their design aesthetician fed my little growing brain. These spaces calmly and joyfully remind me of that youth.

The esthetic is BEAUTIFUL!!! Love the clerestory windows above that provide views and light the back of the apartment. Love Laurel and Hardy too, LOL! But my two cents? Put stable chairs with backs and even armrests at the dining table. Make them simple and functional like everything else in the place, shaker (or whatever) style chairs for example, but replace those. Art is beautiful, but it's not relaxing (at all) to sit at a table for breakfast and have to be wary of tipping over! You want to lean back against a backrest with a hot cup of tea or coffee and look out that bay window completely relaxed. You want to have a glass of wine over a game of scrabble without worrying about falling over if you get a little tipsy or just tip your head back with a belly laugh! To have those two tippy stools as the only place you can sit down in the entire apartment would be a deal breaker for me. So that's my feedback... Change out those dining table seats with functional ones and leave the stools around the place as art or end tables for the bed or something.

This guy is a genius. Reminds me of yesteryear when people actually have talent and put thought into what they did. That is why I love driving into old cities and neighborhoods, to see the old architecture where people cared. I love his furniture and style. I am so glad I watched it. I am a person who stops what I am watching, many times, to visually pick up what I am seeing. This was wonderful.

The craftsmanship on this place is great and the furniture is art. This is fine for a temporary Airbnb but too small and minimal to store the things needing space to live a full life with hobbies and keepsakes. If it was a long-term place to stay, some of that furniture would need to be changed out for things with drawers, like a nightstand with a drawer, coffee table with storage. Smart ways to store the things that we need to keep that clean minimum feel.

The design is minimalistic - that’s basically it. A good designer can make a bare minimum look chic and practical at the same time. For instance - could have those wooden floors elevated so you can have storage beneath it and have some areas with tatamis. The theme is just a mess, not consistent- a messy mixture of East meets West. Also, having wood in the bathroom isn’t practical at all in the long run (moisture will eventually build up in the wood, creating mold). If you want more space, try using a Murphy bed in the bedroom. This video just falls short compared to the previous videos that Kirsten posted.
