In this 1.d4 game, Black comes blazing out of the gates with a popular reply online, 1...c5. Although I like 2.c3 as a practical option (inviting a transposition to an Exchange Slav after 2...cxd4 3.cxd4 d5), here I play the principled space-grabbing move, 2.d5. My opponent continues their blistering pace, and even sacrifices a piece within the first 10 moves! Against such players it's important to take your time (strictly avoid "matching" their pace) and capitalize on the carelessness that will likely creep into their speedy play.

Hey John, in the 1990's I used to be a player and director at the St Paul Castle Chess Club, back when Minnesota was kind of a chess desert, at least at the international level. So when you started playing I followed your progress on the scholastic rating lists and tournaments as one of Minnesota's brightest chess lights. Of course when I found out a few years ago that you had a KZfaq channel I started following that as well. I was gratified to find that outside of being one of Minnesota's strongest players you were also a nice person in general. Congratulations on all your successes and thanks for being a great representative of our home state.

Hearing you say you don't care about views you care about comments. Thank you John. You have given me so much education and enjoyment over the years. Without you I don't think I would have become passionate about chess. I began watching you 5 years or more ago when I first began playing, and I still love all of your content I have watched probably every video. Thank you for your humility and your willingness to share your high level education skills on this platform. There are other good content creators, but I think in term of if you want a teacher, you're the man as you understand what a learner needs in a way which nobody else in the chess community does. You are a legend, thanks so much.

Hey John - just wanted to thank you for the time and effort you put into making these videos. Your clear and thoughtful commentary has helped me think through my own games so much more. So glad to see two Standard games posted close together for the first time in, well, years! I get so much out of them, I have literally been through your entire set of Standard games at least five times!! There are lots of chess channels that are great for entertainment (Rosen, Gotham Chess, Botez, etc.) but for true instructive content, you and Danya are easily the best. Hope that you find the time and the passion to keep Standard Chess going again, but even if not, I will always be thankful for what you have done for the chess community online!!!

Idk if you will see this on an older video, but WOW I can't believe it's taken me this long to start watching the Standard Chess series. I'm a die hard Climbing the Rating Ladder viewer, I honestly think I've watched every single one dating back to your very first videos at this point, I've even gotten to the point of re-watching lol. For some reason I just assumed Standard Chess meant higher level games with less educational content, I have absolutely no idea why. Anyways, long story short I am so happy I've realized that is NOT the case because I focus mainly on longer games such as 15+10 myself and wow. So happy I have hours and hours more content to consume from you. Thank you as always for the great content.

Aw yeah, I can't get enough of these! Seriously your videos in general (and especially the standard games/CTRL) are my absolute favorite YT content. JB THE OG Love the calm response to aggression. It's so easy to feel like you "deserve" to punish your opponent when they play like that. Straight-forward ideas, thorough calculation, and patience usually deals with these kinds of players pretty handily.

Whenever a friend wants to get into chess, I recommend your Chess Fundamentals videos from years and years ago. and you still haven't ceased imparting wisdom. I got so much from Climbing the Ratings Ladder series a few years back. I so appreciated the respect you paid to players so far below your rating. What really struck home was the analysis of your move choices as well as those of your opponent. This, perhaps, more than anything helped me improve my game. It offered a path to improvement through simple checks on one's choices. My chess thinking improved immeasurably! I've learnt much from other KZfaq coaches although none quite match you in terms quality of analysis and ease of comprehension.

Hey John, love your videos. Very instructive as always. Have you ever considered making an opening themed video series? Something like Lichess Plays or your climbing the rating ladder series, where you play lower rated opponents, except here you would play with the same opening plan in every game of a single video, or something along those lines. I think it could be very instructive for people (like me) who are trying to learn a specific opening:)

Hey John, I dont usually comment on videos, but since you mentioned how the comments motivate you more than views/likes I thought I'd let you know that you're one of my favourite chess educators on youtube! Please keep uploading regularly, your videos are always very informative!

Greatly appreciated, John. There are a lot of chess players on YT making educational videos, but I just like your style the best. Are you going to play any OTB tournaments this year? I'm asking for entirely selfish reasons: the videos in which you analyse your own OTB games have always been among my favorites. Sadly, there aren't that many of those. :)

You keep making them, we'll keep watching them! Thank again for the great content 🙂 I learned a lot from this video. I usually do play 2.c3, its simple and it will transpose many times into very familiar positions ...plus its a bit of psychological warfare knowing that the person looking for dynamic and aggressive play after 1...c5 will have to suffer slow positional play after 2.c3.

Hi John, just wanted to say that I've been a longtime fan of your content. Your standard chess videos are incredibly instructive, and my favorite on all of KZfaq. Thank you for all that you do!

Thanks John. Much appreciate you putting more of these videos out there. I love playing guess the move and then seeing your thought process afterwards. Liking and commenting for the algorithm!

Thank you John. I tend to be slow and cautious and these ultra aggressive players often get me flustered. Its hard to tell when they are just bluffing. Good instructive game! ps your standard games (and your old chess fundamentals-would love to see the next instalment) are the best chess resource online, cheers!

Long time viewer. I really appreciate your Standard videos. I learn so much. It is a rare opportunity to see a masters thought process. I also really enjoy your climbing the ratings ladder videos next. It is great to see how you handle lower rated players. Again you have the time to provide comments which are really helpful. Watching you play other masters in Blitz is just for fun as I can't learn as much although it is fun to watch. I own some of your chessable books. Please keep up the great content!

I love this series. I don't have to panic about the clock due to the 15 second increment, and there's more thorough analysis. I look forward to more as your lichess classical rating goes up.
