Not every audience member who speaks out during a comedy show is a heckler. But there's a way to test the waters without upsetting your audience, says comedian Paul F. Tompkins.
By engaging in a civil way with the person who spoke out, you either give them an opportunity to add more fun to the show, or they'll reveal their true colors.
If the person ends up being a heckler after you've attempted including them in the conversation, the audience will be on your side when you shut that person down.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PAUL F. TOMPKINS:
Paul F. Tompkins is a comedian, actor and writer. He is known for his work in television on such programs as Mr. Show with Bob and David, Real Time with Bill Maher and Best Week Ever, and he co-starred in There Will Be Blood, with Daniel Day-Lewis.
He is well known for his numerous appearances on podcasts, including his 100+ appearances on Comedy Bang! Bang! He is also the host of the Fusion Channel talk show No, You Shut Up!, The Dead Authors Podcast, the online Made Man interview series Speakeasy with Paul F. Tompkins, the Earwolf podcast SPONTANEANATION with Paul F. Tompkins, and The Pod F. Tompkast, which was ranked #1 by Rolling Stone on their list of "The 10 Best Comedy Podcasts of the Moment" in 2011.

TRANSCRIPT:
One of the best lessons I ever learned was that someone who speaks up at a show is not necessarily a heckler. When I first started out anyone that said anything I was so rattled by it that I would attack that person and try to shut them down and assert my dominance, you know, over the room. Like I’m in charge, I’m the guy with the microphone. And it took me a while but then I realized oh sometimes people are just - they’re forgetting themselves. They’re agreeing with the thing that you said. They’re trying to add on to an idea that you just put out there. And then I realized anytime anything like that happens this is an opportunity for more fun. So I would always start out - I learned to when I was confronted with someone saying something to ask in a friendly tone, oh what did you say, you know. To let them know I’m not trying to attack this person because you have to let the audience know because it can turn a room very quickly if you’re too aggressive with someone, if you’re too upset by it people can sense this. And it’s unpleasant and it’s uncomfortable for people. And so what I always like to communicate to an audience if someone says something is everything’s okay. I’m going to ask this person what they said and maybe we’ll have a conversation. But it’s all going to be fun the whole time.
It’s also a covert defense mechanism because if I let this person talk and then they reveal themselves to be someone who does want to ruin the show now everybody is on my side because I’ve been nice so far. So it's also - it's win-win because it's either we're going to have a fun conversation with this strange person who started talking or I will give this jerk enough rope to hang himself and then the audience will be on my side when I do have to shut him down. But more often than not, people are just kind of forgetting themselves or they get wrapped up in it and they want to talk to you because you're talking, you know. And I've had some great fun times talking to people from the audience who just accidentally spoke up.

This is just good advice for life in general - hear people out. Maybe he's not asking for money, maybe she's not trying to sell you something, maybe he's not trying to get your number.

I feel honored, back in the late 80's, in one of my few attempts at stand-up I was heckled by Paul F. Tompkins at a club in Philly called Antic City. Looking back, if I would have had this advice, it wouldn't have helped my material but it could have been more fun... LOL

What a great and applicable advice, I also stopped shutting down these hecklers in my family - turns out those children like me and they have interesting questions if I let them speak.

I have many fears, saying something wrong at a Paul F. Tompkins set is in the top ten. I love him..... I fear him. Or more correctly I fear his disapproval.

Intriguing study. Some comedians/influencers have a record to sass the audience randomly or intentionally. Cause and effect offer worlds of inertia when heckling is founded on the counterargument, especially when the host instigate the slanders.

This all seemed obvious to me, but for myself I do this because I just love having a conversation and going back and forth building upon it. After watching this though I have actually seen this happen where people feel they're getting attacked when really myself or others are actually just trying to agree with them or support them.

I think, with practice and a sharp mind, it could be viewed as one step further: I've seen some comedians make an impromptu comedy-duo out of talented audience members. Those audience members may not (probably certainly won't) have an entire set to add in with, nor would 99% of them attempt to do so - but with quick wit some folks have funny quips, addendums, or plays off of the comedian that the comedian can, in turn, use for the benefit of everyone.

It's far meaner to intentionally disturb a performance (in a classical heckling sense), because it shows a lack of respect for the person on stage and fellow audience members.

This is the least funny man I've ever seen in my life! I had to look him up after watching a TERRIBLE episode of Just for Laughs. He literally reminds me more of a crisis actor. I mean dude, if you got a plan b, use it. Cause this shit ain't for you! If anyone can point me to an actual funny bit of his, I'd love to see it! 😂 He is bland and takes years to get to a punchline that wasn't even funny.
