What HR Managers Learn About You By Looking at Your Clothes

If you want to get your dream job, it’s crucially important to make the best possible first impression on the recruiter, and everything, including your style, means a lot. There are five vital things you should know that hiring professionals use to form their opinions about you and decide if you will fit into the corporate culture and get the job or not.
Sherry Maysonave, head of Empowerment Enterprises, an image consulting firm based in Austin, Texas, says that the first impression happens in less than 30 seconds and it’s based entirely on your attire.
Using the color of your clothes, you can influence other people however you want. Pastel colors in clothes and makeup can help you win other people’s trust. The most important thing is not to overdo it. Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview, unless you’re aiming for a creative job. The color red represents the life force and the inclination to be successful and efficient.
Business suits are not always the best choice for a job interview because the impression you may give the employer is that you are “overqualified.” A tasteful statement dress that doesn’t reveal your neckline and ends around 1 inch above the very top of your knee will do just fine.
Your attire should be as close to the company dress code as possible. People are more eager to accept other people who are like them, so the more you look like the other employees, the easier it is for an HR manager to imagine you working with them.

SUMMARY
-Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview. If you choose clothes with contrasting colors, you could make a powerful and dominant impression. The worst color choice for a job interview, according to studies and opinions of specialists, is orange - it’s often associated with something unprofessional.
-A business quit is the perfect choice if a manager is hiring for a senior-level position, a flower print dress won’t do in this case. But if you are looking for a job teaching children or a creative job, this type of attire is not just appropriate, but also preferable.
-It’s better to impress your prospective employee with your professional achievements and attitude to work than with luxury brand logos.
-Bad manicure, old clothes, and other little flaws, can make a very negative impression. Wear small and elegant pieces of jewelry like small earrings, bracelets, and watches. Your bag should have a clear shape.
-Use social media to find out all about the company dress code and try to look like the other employees at the interview.

Hello Bright Side. I work for Employment and Training in Orange County NY. We are making a PowerPoint presentation for our unemployed and welfare to work clients and we were wondering if we can link your video for reference in our presentation. We are NOT selling this presentation. We only using it in our program to teach them about dress for success and what to wear when preparing for an interview. Your video will get more views and our unemployed and welfare to work clients will benefit from it. Thank you so much it will be greatly appreciated.

People need to keep in mind especially HR managers, if you are looking at someone's resume and they haven't worked in a while I would not expect much like well manicured hands and brand clothes keep in mind these people haven't had a job in a while so money will play a huge factor in their appearance. However a great shower well iron clean fresh clothes shows humbleness for the interview definitely always gets me my perfect employee at all times. People who haven't had a job in a while or always grateful for you providing them a start over in life. Liberation looks so good on your employee I always get these people and they show up on time they do their job they're always doing overtime and they always want to succeed within company, So HR people keep that in mind.

@@anitalaff It seems they were commenting that if it's a creative job, you can get away with bolder or more unique colors and styles. If you're going for a corporate position then a suit is the way to go. A suit would come off as stiff for a designer job and maybe also for a nurse. I think that's where they were going with that comment. Nurses, like shop assistants should exude warmth, empathy and generally come off as a "people person". That's hard to do in a stuffy suit.

This is what really annoys me about HR departments: not only do they interview for jobs that they don't actually understand ( e.g. HR don't understand accounting but they might screen potential accountants). So they will hire someone for a position they don't understand based on whether they like the way they are dressed 😩

Well fitting black pants, spotless white shell and black blazer with black shoes. Simple but nice jewelry, a gold chain, a nice watch and no more than 2 rings, one on each hand. Have a fresh manicure that's a subtle color like a pinkish mauve. If your diamond wedding ring is huge maybe consider just wearing your wedding band, it'll be less distracting and if you're interviewed by a woman she may not like you because you have a nicer ring than she does. Women notice jewelry and judge.

As an experienced former HR Manager who interviewed candidates for many positions at all levels in several different industries.... prepare prepare! The first impression is very important, but not as important as the content of your interviews and your composure. Research the organization and your prospective role in this company. Prepare for questions related to your job history .... your successes as well as those things you have learned along the way that make you flexible and a team worker. As for your outfit.... as the video suggests, dress for the nature of your prospective position ... but with a conservative edge.... appropriate for that business and it's role in your community and markets. Have good references. Don't interrupt the individual who is interviewing you, especially if what you say is contradictory. Listen and pay attention for your own knowledge and have questions that are relevant. All of these aspects, managed by YOU carefully will prepare you as best as possible for the opportunity and will probably result in a second interview and more.

Nadia .S I agree with your comment in its entirety. (Hopefully it will gain more likes and be bumped up to the top.) I have never held a position in HR, but based on my experiences in various jobs/companies, I am able to reflect on what worked (or didn’t) during the interview process. Preparedness is KEY! Your comment is by far the best and most helpful/informative in the entire section! Thank you for sharing with everyone and here’s to the hope that it will serve as inspiration for jobseekers everywhere. •To expand on the advice from the OP: -Dress appropriately for the job you are interviewing for. Your clothes should be neat and fit well, paired with appropriate (and CLEAN) shoes. Good hygiene along with basic hairstyle, minimal jewelry, and natural-looking makeup (if you wear it) rounds out your look. Again, be prepared so you can tailor your interview outfit for the specific job position. Good luck!

Nine months ago I showed for my interview (I'm qualified for the job and got it!) wearing a muted black and white pair of ankle slacks paired with a white button-down with a short, structured, black blazer (I'm female). When the director greeted me, she said, "You look like someone who is here for an interview!" I had yet to introduce myself or ask for her. She saw me and came over to me. Clothing does make a difference wether anyone claims otherwise. It is viewed as respectful because the interviewee took time to look position-professional and the prospective employer gets an idea of how you'll appear toward clients. It's not everything, but looking tidy and professional helps with business.

Also, I want to say "if you are applying for a creative position" the hiring manager is NOT going to look at your clothes, but at the quality of work in your portfolio. These dress rules actually do NOT apply to "creative positions". You would not even get invited for an interview if your portfolio (that get's you that interview in the first place) is bad.

OK now lets get to the part of the vid that they didn't talk about, shall we? They judge by colors alright, the color of your skin also. Female interviewers also can be judgemental if they are interviewing a woman, who they feel is more attractive than them. And regardless of the reason why you haven't worked in a good while, as in years due to health reasons for example, they judge off of that also, and won't hire you. They wouldn't want to be judged easily, so they shouldn't do it to others.

What I found out later is that a lot of companies when hiring go off how one looks as well as qualifications. I was shocked at first but then when I googled online I read multiple posts of older individuals that were having a hard time getting hired and plenty of them had the qualifications. Basically they pass the first round where the application was reviewed but as soon as they went for the face to face they didn’t get hired and it was clearly based off appearance. It’s sad but that is the way it is.

martín bergmann. That depends entirely on the business. Watching how people dress is not necessarily emotional hiring. If the future employee will be in contact with customers for example, he/she MUST dress that way in the interview. I worked in finances for a while, the color red on a friggin tie was considered too progressive by some companies. You sound like you have no clue outside your very limited area.

HR managers are people just like us. Their decisions SHOULD be based on skills, abilities, qualifications and experience but instead, too many times are based on race or how they feel a person will "fit in" to the office. The bottom line is personal preference

Since I worked in a bank, I attend job interviews only in business clothing. And I also heard of something called etiquette. I think that you can not go wrong with that knowledge. Heels - lower ones, with wider heel. ALWAYS wear pantyhose for formal occasions. Skirt - not shorter than 10 centimeters adbove the knees. Or trousers. But formal ones. The top - you can have lower neckline on your top, but your cleavage should not be seen. You should have your shoulders covered. You can never go wrong with a blouse. Pastel/white colours with dark skirt or trousers is just fine. For men, always wear a tie. Black suit is for occasions like funeral, wedding or theatre. For business meeting it's better to wear a gray or blue suit. Your shoes should be the same colour like your belt.

Lol I think I dressed well and was well tidy with a smile on my face. What I lacked was my presence . I was nervous, I spelt coffee before I got to the interview. So be careful of that. If you want a job don't seem nervous, you gotta be confident and calm and talk highly of yourself.

I showed up early for my interview in a suit and tie. The HR woman was 15 minutes late, came in, called my name and never introduced herself. She just said, "Follow me." I thought she may have been a runner and was asked to come out and get me. As we entered an office, she said this is where the interview would take place. As I sat down in the chair she took the other side of the desk. I still had no idea what position she held or what her name was as she started asking questions. I had to ask her what her name and position was halfway through the interview. She was not even dressed professionally, but in jeans and a pullover shirt for being a large corporation. I was dressed well enough that you would have thought I was in a high-ranking position with the company. I immediately knew this is not the kind of place I'd want to work for when HR looks and acts so unprofessional. These are usually the people a job interviewee is the first to meet, they should be making a phenomenal impression for themselves and the company. Yet, she has a job.

I think and firmly believe that it also depends where you or in what states you live, or rather, where the job interview is. Just relocated here to Colorado Springs from Vegas. I am a Victim Advocate, whose always around and talk to other professionals. My job requires me to be present in court hearings and at times represent a part of community meetings as well. Had been going to job interviews here for the same position and each time I noticed they don't dress professionally. Feeling like I am over dress and seeing everyone is looking at me. In fairness, I see that the men in HR are dressed either in suits or shirt and tie.

Remember the type of industry is the most important. If you are interviewing for a banking job in the Northeast, wear a suit. If you are interviewing at a Tech Company in Silicon Valley, wear whatever you want. At Google one of my best interviewers in five years wore sweatpants and had bed head. We didn't hire the one person that interviewed in a three piece suit. Ask your Recruiter or Hiring Manager what is common for that company and that is the best place to start. Lastly, your grooming is more important than your clothes. I hope this helps!

I think your age and the position in which you're applying, makes a significant difference as to what attire is appropriate. If you're going for a leadership position, the most important image to display is that you have had success, in this case, showing name brand clothes and having the latest phone is a good thing. On the other hand, if you're very young and applying for an entry level position, name brand clothes and the latest phone could demonstrate ones lack of responsibility for priorities. There are other factors that contribute to how appropriate certain attire ends up actually appearing, how you carry yourself, how articulately you speak and most importantly, how well mannered you are. My point, your attire is to one extent justified by the way you walk, sit, speak and demonstrate respect for your potential employers!!!

For females - Muster color full sleeves collared shirt always work for interviews. Note: If the fabric is Georgette wear it tucked out. In cotton or polyester, tuck in with deep navy blue/black trouser. Don't forget to wear a thin belt with 1"width in brown/black color. Carry beige/brown/black monocolor medium size handbag 👜. Accessorise yourself with small Diamond studs or pearl drop/round earrings, wear a watch with metal Dial n Belt. Wear a minimum of 2" heels or wedges in mono color. Use light makeup with Matt lipstick best suited to your complexion. Even red works if you can carry. Apply kajal/maskara which will enhance your eyes and leaves an impression of a confident and suitable employee for a particular job. Note: Avoid red/bold colored nail polish. Pastels/nude or no nail polish are best for interviews (provided you hands are will moisturised and nails are properly filed). Last but not least, Hair. Leave your hair open if you've got a nice haircut 💇(no more funky look though) or just simply put a pony tail (The motive is to look tidy😊 and not messy😟). Now, you're ready for interview. All the best girls.😀👍

Many have good CVs , are really ambitiouscan handle an interview. My own opinion is that personal traits are most important. If soemone is outgoing they will stay outgoig. or creative, analytic, correct etc. The interview situation is not everyday work- the thing is to figure out how someone whoudl be evey day and fit in with existing/other group members. Not always does one understand soemone after 30 miuntes of polite roleplay...

LucyLynette, we don't know one another, but I will attempt to give you some friendly life and work experience. I don't know how old you are, but you will find in life, we *"judge"* one another all the time in all situations. An HR manager's primary job is to judge potential applicants to determine whether they are appropriate for the company they work for. Here we are on KZfaq and in the process of leaving me a comment warning me against *"prejudging others"* YOU prejudged me. I think that was lost on you. Are you that rarely seen Unicorn that NEVER posts a negative or contrary comment in social media when you disagree with someone's perspective? My guess is you HAVE posted negative comments toward others. But....there I go prejudging you. See how that works?

I work for one of the major discount-store chains, and their main requirements are closed-toed shoes, clean clothing without holes, and a collar shirt. I like the leeway with our pants type because I am much more physically and mentally comfortable in skirts. It may seem like an odd choice for stocking merchandise but the shelving is low enough that I rarely need a step stool. Mid-calf skirts (with bike shorts underneath for modesty/chafing) are still short enough to prevent tripping on fabric. Our collared shirt can be any style within reason; I pick polos because they’re durable and easy to match with a fun pair of patterned socks. I like this semi-uniform dress code; we all ‘fit in’ but can express individual tastes with patterns and hair accessories and shoe style (and now with the style response to the mandatory masks).

Best thing I’ve had luck with in interviews is a well tailored, semi-form fitting black or navy blue dress paired with a black or navy blue blazer. I usually keep makeup natural and my hairstyles usually tied to a simple, elegant chignon or bun. Usually the only jewelry I wear is a simple watch and small silver hoops. It’s worked since college and it seems to universally be loved with HR wherever I happen to be interviewing.

Welcome to the real world. It's not just in America that HR tends to judge on appearance either. We all do it almost subconsciously anyways, our bodies are hard wired for it, survival of the fittest, who we find sexually attractive, who we deem as a threat, etc. I still think that some aspects of appearance can be overlooked if the person makes up for it in their intelligence and mannerisms though. Think about geniuses, who are usually eccentric and socially awkward. Obviously they go on to make enough of an impression with their brain power to overcome any physical appearance that was unkempt looking, or unusual senses of style. But, for the most part, regular people must pay attention to their appearance if they wish to make a good impression. Caring about your appearance shows that because you care enough to make a good impression, that you'll likely be a worker who will have the desire to be a valuable asset to the workplace as well.
