It was as close to extortion as a company could do. Take the woman to a secluded, closed room and threaten her that what she has is worthless unless she gives it to them? Since the gifts she got (bat, ball an cap) cannot be authenticated by having Ohtani sign them in front of her, they should be considered forgeries.

As a life long Dodger fan Im so disappointed in the Dodgers organization. They robbed this poor girl , and look terrible in doing so. I only hope they make this right as a lifetime Dodger fan herself.

They did make it right. The gave her a bat, ball and glove that the equipment manager signed himself. Noticed, none of the gifts had to be "authenticated."

It's the easiest thing in the world to authenticate any HR ball. Just quickly take photos of the ball and all distinguishing marks/scuffs along with pics of your ticket stub and selfies in the section where the TV broadcast will show you on record, then upload the photos to all your social media accounts so it's time stamped. That's more of an authentication than some silver sticker the MLB wants to put on it ...

I'm Japanese. If you look at what Ohtani actually said in Japanese, it's clear he didn't lie at all for this matter. Some people still seem to believe Ohtani lied, but it was absolutely just a translation mistake.

It is very clear Shohei never said he met the lady. Ask any Japanese person who watched the post interview, they will verify it 100%. I suppose there’s no single American who knows a Japanese person in the entire country. I assume that the interpreter doesn’t understand the subtlety of the Japanese language. No offence to the interpreter but Dodgers need to find someone who understands Japanese better as this is playing havoc with Shohei’s reputation. Furthermore, I was concerned the way the same interpreter translated Shohei’s press conference statement about the gambling scandal. There are at least several occasions I shook my head thinking; no no no, he’s not conveying Shohei’s words clearly enough to avoid misunderstanding. It was upsetting for me to see it wasn’t handled better.

Ohtani didn't say "I" met with the fan. There was no subject in the sentence. Translator probably made the wrong assumption. I'm native Japanese and Japanese could be pretty ambiguous sometimes.

Shohei is the nicest guy but surrounded by thieves and hounds that make him look bad. I am sure he would have loved the woman to have the ball and if he did want it he would have contacted her and given her a fair price for it. Heck, he bailed out his thief translator and gave him 4.5 million....Bad people always latch onto or try to take advantage to nice successful people.....Very Sad. I’m skeptical of the guards. The offer was two hats and increased to two hats AND a ball and bat? So these guards were instructed to low ball her on the gear? If she accepted the two hats they were just going to bring the gear back? This is weird. Hopefully the Dodgers investigate

Consider Ohtani's and Ippei's track record. Consider what extend of Ohtani's life was under Ippei's control due to the language barrier. What is the more likely scenario? Ohtani was intentionally gambling, vs Ippei was stealing.

Security guards told her that if she left with the ball then the ball would be worthless, she'd have to prove she didn't switch the ball. They pressured her to decide and decide now. And of course, no husband by her side to help her. And her signed gifts are not authenticated. You can get those stamped autographs of players in the giftshop. Talk about worthless.

Using an interpreter right now, he is even being misunderstood. Imagine if he misused some words. Learning how to speak the language for a celebrity is hard. As a Dodger fan, I at first thought she ripped herself off initially. Then it came out that the Dodgers pressured her to give up the ball. Disappointed, but not surprised. The Dodgers have to screw up, and then get humilated, before doing the right thing.
