Dave reviews the Laowa Argus 33mm f0.95 for Fujifilm cameras. This manually focusing lens provides a 0.95 aperture at a more affordable price point than other super fast prime lenses. Watch for Dave's impressions and test samples using a Fujifilm X-T3 mirrorless camera.

I don't own this particular lens, but I have the 7Artisans 35mm f/0.95. I love that there are at least 3 manufacturers putting out lenses of this type; it really makes for a unique look on the Fuji system that's really fun to use. I use my f/0.95 for portrait work and still-life mostly, and it really is an enjoyable shooting experience. Bummed that mine doesn't have aperture clicks either, but I've never turned it too far from 0.95 to ruin any shots 🙂

I think the best thing about shooting Fuji is that you can wear your glasses on the forehead and it's acceptable.

It’s a phenomenal lens and if you are adapt to using manual focus you can get some stellar photos with it!

I've had this lens for a while, but not used it that much. Lately been trying it out and experimenting. I would say i regard it primarily as an Art lens due to the very creative fine tuned control you can do at 0.95 and up to 2.8. It's a great lens to practice your manual focus in nature with trees and flowers etc.

This lens combined with the Velvia fuji film sim and a tad out of focus abstract shots are indeed very pleasing to the eye, artistically speaking.

I have spent most of my 65 plus years in photography shooting with a single 35mm full frame focal length of 50mm and want to get back to that with my Fuji X-T2 and X-Pro2. That means going to 33mm, which is the equivalent of 49.5mm on full-frame 35mm. For AF, there is the Fuji 33mm f1.4, the Tokina ATX-M 33mm f1.4, or the Viltrox 33mm f1.4, but for MF, so far the Laowa Argus 33mm f0.95 is the only choice I've found.

There’s the Mitakon Speedmaster II but it’s got way too much flare and chromatic aberration for me to enjoy the 0.95. I sold it.

Manual focus throw too long? Oh man, how I long for a longer manual focus throw on my Sigma Art lenses ... Informative review! Maybe add a couple of night time shots, astro wide open?

Thanks for the feedback. I like wider lenses when it comes to Astro myself however the next fast lens we review I will do my best to get some samples.

Literally no such thing as too long a manual focus throw. Makes shooting a pleasure. I think he’s confused: every OTHER lens has too short a focus throw!

I have this lens and I think it’s fair to mention that the click less aperture ring is tighter at 0.95, so at least it’s a little harder to bump it out if that one aperture. I don’t think I agree about the long focus throw. The long focus throw is super nice to get precise adjustments. The only times it’s annoying is when I change from photographing something very close to something far away (or the other way around). Other than that, it actually feels essential. Personally I LOVE this lens! It’s a lot of fun to use, it’s sharp, it has low chromatic aberration and it’s not the heaviest lens I own for Fuji, so I don’t mind the weight. What I don’t love about it though is that it does not come with a nor,al good and lens cap in addition to the square ones. Don’t get me wrong, the square hood and lens cap is great, but I use polarizing filters a lot which means I can’t use the square hood and lens cap. This is far from a deal breaker for me though, so I’ll find ways to work around this issue.

Hi and thanks for the comments. With regards to the manual focus throw, like I said in the review I learned to adapt to it, often being proactive while walking towards a subject so I was at least close to the range I needed before I even raised the camera to my eye. We are spoiled with AF these days and using a manual focus lens with this kind of throw takes time to get efficient with it. Like you I really enjoyed this lens.

A lot of people pretty much ignore how thin the dof at f/0.95 is. For me, the long focus throw is great.

F0.95 sounds amazing but getting manual focus on exactly what you intended is tough if there is any kind of movement
@just_eirik
@just_eirik 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, and that is what the long focus throw is supposed to help with. I have this lens and it’s one of the easier lenses to focus manually of the ones I’ve owned over the years. Not necessarily easy, but EASIER, you know :)

Use your hip and feet to get things in focus. That is what mankind used already in the world of negative film a long, long time ago. Manual focus is adding flavours to the moment of creation and Autofocus is for action photo only and not with f/0.95.

To be honest I'm still a little disappointed the Fuji first party f1.0 wasn't 33mm.

I am disappointed that you have not made more, if not most, images at dusk or in the dark. That is surely one of the main applications for ultra bright lenses, this is where they shine: night photography with moving subjects.

Hi Thomas, Sorry for disappointing you with the image selection for this episode. I did use this lens in many low light situations however those images didn't make it into the episode. Next Ultra fast lens review I will make sure to include some. Thanks

As soon as you noted "click-less aperture" I decided NOT to get it. I do have another Laowa on my Fuji X-T4 (the new 10mm) as well as a Voigtlander 35/1.5. As an aside, I wish Fujifilm would release a camera that is strictly for stills photographers; I can't stand all this added 4K 8K and a zillion encoding options.

Thanks for watching. There are lots of options out there and not all designs are what we want. I did find that the X-Pro III is about as close to the strictly photo camera experience as I would want. Have you looked or tried that model out?

big and heavy... hope your not serious. lol. Long focus throw is required with lenses that require close focus and precise focus, so can't complain about that either. A cheaper lens like this needs to be stopped down half or a full stop to get best quality, its almost pointless to shoot wide open. So ld look at it like a f1.2/f1.4 lens and not a f.95 lens.
