Honest time: I don't miss handshakes at all, but I am dying for free hugs. I am 29, a huge extrovert, and I LIVE for anime conventions and the atmosphere: free hugs, spontaneous crazy cosplay fun, going on photos with everyone, mingling, making friends, dancing, sining, etc. The *second* the government lifts the restrictions - which I guess just happened because OF THOSE NEW CDC RECOMMENDATIONS FUCK YEAAAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - I am going (as soon as I am vaccinated 100%) to the first anime convention held again, free hugging every single weeb who also missed it, and its gonna feel so so so good! I am a huge hug bear, and a huge bubbly happy go lucky high energy extrovert, so I can't freaking wait to put this all behind and get my beloved cons and free hugs back! I can already feel them... I HATE treating everyone as a danger instead of someone fun to get to know, so I was literally screaming from joy for more then 10 minutes seeing the CDC director use the words "old normal" in that press conference yesterday, because as she said, that WAS what I was waiting for. Desperately. Can't wait to free hug a whole con. But the handshake can go, IDC about that XD

In defense of handshakes, there are seldom few places in our lives where we can engage in physical contact with other people. Humans are meant to be physically engaging with one another, and a lack of engagement can lead to depression and a severe sense of loneliness. While a handshake won't cure your depression, it is a step in the right direction to make you feel connected to another person. As for cleanliness, that's as easy to fix as carrying around some hand sanitizer.

I once went in for a handshake and my brethren went in for a fist bump when walking opposite to each other, safe to say the result was tantamount to that of social suicide with it being like some sort of drive-by molestation of his hand. We both looked at each other for the last time as the repercussions from the sheer embarrassment was so gross to ever see one another again.

Fun fact of the day: in fencing matches, it was customary for opponents to shake hands after each match. That was until the 2020 pandemic when the handshake was replaced with a sword tap to prevent the spread of the virus. Since then, even after the virus faded into the background of life, the sword tap replaced the handshake as it was more natural and seems more refined.
@AnonYmous692713 жыл бұрын
What we really need is an alternative to the handshake where we don't have to make any sort of direct contact with each other at all. I propose this instead: First, you stand up straight, then you extend your arm with your palm facing down towards the floor. Then you raise your arm up above your head, pointed forwards at an upwards angle. I feel that this greeting could become really popular in certain circles.

I'm surprised you didn't go into the historical basis of handshakes, the reason it's mostly done with the right (most people's dominant hand) was to show you were unarmed and not a threat. Modern times it's more or less become a mutual show of respect, in our times of isolation where personal space is a huge issue (even before covid) welcoming another person to touch you is a very personal thing.

It will be a blessing if handshakes can become less seen as essential in 'professional' environments. Earlier in the pandemic while in an office I had someone get offended because I wouldn't shake their hand.

Complete sanitation from germs weakens your immune system overall so i dont think touching someones hand will be the end of the world, this seems a bit overdramatic and if your already a person who cant take a hand shake then your probably a person who carries sanitizer on you at all times

My friends dad is the leader of the freemasonry guild in the city I live in. They are just kinda pathetic. Like it’s just a club for boys who want to feel special. It’s also really pretentious.
