In this video, I show you a flip-through and a look inside several levels of The Good and the Beautiful handwriting curriculum, alongside several levels of Abeka handwriting curriculum. I also talk about the reasons you may or may not want to use a handwriting curriculum, as well as talking about a hot-button topic: to teach cursive, or not to teach cursive. As a left-hander, I briefly touch on some of the struggles of teaching left-hander to write, but if you would like a video on that topic, let me know, and I can make one!
I don't show you the books (because I haven't been able to acquire them yet), but I talk about Handwriting Without Tears and my intent to use that program with my son because they offer Spanish editions of their handwriting books. I didn't mention it in the video, but part of the early Handwriting Without Tears program is a set of curved and straight wooden boards that are used to build letters with. We own this set, and they have worked very well for my young son in the pre-writing stage, and are another reason that I appreciate their program.

What do you use for handwriting in your homeschool? Comment below! Side note: Sometimes my videos are published out of order from when they were filmed. In this video, I mention that I wanted to get the Spanish version of Handwriting Without Tears for my son, but I hadn't received it yet. If you watched my recent unboxing/haul, you'll know that it has since arrived. Hurray for handwriting any language! :)

Hurrah for left-handed life! haha--there are some challenges but I always find that left-handed people are pretty proud of figuring life out in a right-handed world. :)

I introduce cursive whenever they have an interest in what I call "fancy lettering" ;) Since I've switched our curriculum sooo many times, I actually am still trying to decide exactly what I'll use with my 3rd munchkin who is now in kinder. I used Abeka with my oldest and MFW with my second but we've switched from those-- thanks for sharing these!

haha, it can be tough! I'm leaning toward Handwriting Without Tears for my two little boys, but more because they offer the books in Spanish than because of the way the writing is taught. I have heard that their design is pretty left-handed friendly, so I'll have to see when we get to that point later. I do love cursive, or "fancy lettering." Makes it sound special!

It is so pretty, isn't it? I tend to write in print normally, but if I'm writing a card or a thank you note or anything that I want to look nice, I always use cursive.

This was so helpful. I’ve been wondering when to work with my daughter on maybe writing her name but she’s finally getting the hint of coloring on objects instead of just all over the page lol. She recognizes the difference between numbers & letters at her age which I think is awesome! I will for sure teach my daughter cursive when she is older! My brother is almost 17 & can’t write in cursive & can’t even read it!!!! It’s insane so me lol
@SevenInAll

That is definitely awesome that she can already categorize and tell the difference between numbers and letters! That's a big step! The fact that people who don't learn to write in cursive often can't really read it either is a big motivation for me to continue teaching it--so many old documents were written in cursive, and even to this day, many cards are, I think even if you don't use cursive most of the time (and I don't, I definitely write in print more often than cursive), it's still good to know it at least well enough to read it.

I think this is something I need for my son. He is learning how to form his letters and struggling with a few. They don’t teach cursive here no more. I have decided that I will reach it to my son on my own.

A cursive workbook will definitely help for practice! Writing eventually just becomes a matter of muscle memory, once a child has enough practice. It's all about building that habit. I've been hearing that some schools no longer teach cursive--but I do love it, and I want my kids to learn it.

That's completely true about letting them mark make in the early years to help them have the motor skills to write later on. My four year old is left handed... Only one in our while family.lol x I really don't know when to start with cursive. My oldest is nine but he has some learning issues so I haven't started it with him yet because he finds writing stressful. I don't know whether to start his younger brother first or try it together x

Hey, another left-hander! I wonder if my second son will be left or right handed, haha. It will be harder for me to teach a right handed child how to hold the pencil. etc. I am very clumsy with my right hand. It can be tough to decide when to introduce new skills!

Yes, if you're using the full Abeka program, it is nice that the Abeka handwriting ties right into the phonics sounds they're learning.

Handwriting Without Tears for learning how to print. I show my children how to connect the letters into cursive with no program. For my child who wanted more cursive - Zaner Blosser. I’m still tired of Zaner Blosser from when I went to school, but she likes it, and it works like a charm.

Do you have a video about left-handers? My husband is left-handed and so is my oldest, a girl (5 yrs old). Also thinking our 9 month old is showing lefty tendencies. Middle boy is right handed. I'm really wondering what steps to take in handwriting. Cursive early or later? Slanted or straight? Please give me some tips!
@SevenInAll

I don't have a video or all that much advice other than--don't panic, us lefties tend to be pretty good at adapting things to work for us. Letter formation still needs to be taught, but lefties typically draw horizontal strokes in the opposite direction from right handed people, and angel the paper in the opposite direction when writing in cursive. Using pens and pencils that don't smear easily also helps. AND if you do any self-printing, I have found that I much prefer not using any spiral binding or coil binding for a book my son needs to write in, the coils can really get in the way. With 3 ring binders, I'll just take a page out and put it on the table for any writing work.

my son use to be left handed and the school he use to be in made him write with his right hand, I only found out after it was done, do you think that is ok ? He can’t write with his left hand anymore. This is very interesting, you taught us load in this video. at what age do you think children should start practising to write? Thanks for sharing
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes kids do naturally change their hand preference as they grow older, but it's very sad when schools force them to use a different hand. It usually works out okay in the end, naturally left-handed people who were made to learn to write right-handed often end up writing right-handed but still doing other things like eating or catching and throwing balls with their left-hand. I think the beginning of practicing to write just happens with holding a crayon/pencil/marker and scribbling or coloring--that builds up a lot of the muscle strength! So those pre-writing skills happen around age 2. By age 2-3, some kids are ready to begin tracing shapes on the lines...and it will really depend on the kid for writing actual letters, but often by 5 they are learning to write letters, and by 6-7 can write them well.

I find that I don't actually write often in cursive myself--mostly for if I'm writing a birthday card or thank you note, something that I want to look nice and pretty. If it's just a grocery list or writing to myself, I print. But I love the skill of it and definitely want our kids to learn it!

I am a right teaching a lefty preschooler to write. We started with Abeka manuscript this year but he is not loving it. Tried painting letters, different tracing sheets, and sidewalk chalk...no go. Today He begged me to let him play on the draw screen on my tablet. I gave him his crayon shaped stylus, wrote some letters on the screen and low and behold...tracing letters without a fight 🤯😂

Yay!! That's a big win right there! It's not easy teaching a kid with the opposite hand than the one you write with! I got lucky that my son is left-handed too, now I'm wondering what hand my second son will use...I doubt that the odds are in our favor for another lefty, haha!
