I've been self employed for going on 4 years now. In my area Handyman is exactly what you want on your cards, truck etc. The guy that made my signs for my truck put construction instead of handyman and I noticed a drop in my calls. A person should think about what certain words implies. Construction implies equipment, subs, some employees, etc. But most importantly it implies you are expensive. After all it is a construction company so you have to have a lot of overhead is what most people think. Handyman implies you a small business owner without alot of overhead. Less expensive than that construction company anyway. Imo

Steps : 1. Choose your services (choose one niche) 2. Learn the local handyman Laws (varies from state to state) 3. Define your ideal customer ( not everybody is your customer) 4. Set your pricing ( market research, figure out your business expenses) 5. Develop a marketing strategy ( advertising yourself, Online & offline ) THANK ME LATER 😎

The Money Filters Rule# 1 Never, Never call yourself or your business, “Handyman” Your pay just went down 50% after calling yourself a Handyman. Use contractor, home repair specialist, property maintenance professional, anything but Handyman. I used Contractor, no license needed, and sounds much more professional.

As someone who has dabbles in the trade since I was thirteen, I started helping my dad, then a friend of my dads was my first boss, quit school at 17, I'm 34 now, I has a steady job doing industrial electrical, and work weekends doing my side business. Finding a price to charges sometimes is morally oriented decision. For example I'm not going to charge an old woman just to change her light bulbs, I'm just going to help them out. I made a lot of friends just helping people out which also got me more jobs.

Thank you! I work at a glass company and make good money, but due to COVID and my wife losing her income it’s been rough. I just did a drywall ceiling repair for $2000 and couldn’t believe they paid me that, but looking back it was worth every penny for the struggle that it turned out to be. Being “the nice guy” doesn’t pay, I told myself I wasn’t gonna short change myself and I didn’t and boom, $2000 cash in hand and didn’t break a sweat! Thanks for the video it was very informative, I just don’t know how to go about advertising, any suggestions would help, thanks for the video!

Thank you so much for mentioning the “Handyman Laws” I had no idea! I live in Florida and a handyman license is not needed to do most small to mid size jobs but it’s only $200-$300 to be able to do more mid size jobs. Quotes from my research: “You do not need a Florida handyman license. An unlicensed handyman can do the following: install cabinets, flooring, and above ground swimming pools; paint the interior and exterior of a home; perform basic yard work, and repair drywall.”

Particularly liked the emphasis on working out your rate. My advice; be realistic about your available hours, don't include weekends (you will probably end up working some but they shouldn't form part of your base hours) and don't forget to include holiday time. I get really miffed when I hear people say 'oh I'm self employed, I don't get paid holiday'. My reply 'best have a word with your boss then', of course you do but you must factor them in. Oh and just in case you're in any doubt I'm self employed and have been for the past nine years.

I was just watching this video. I paused it to go look up something online, and then unknowingly found your resources and started reading an article about Steve Handyman in California, and some of the things that he does to maximize his business to avoid excessive estimate calls. I then found out I was looking at your website so here I am back and I just wanted to share I think you’ve got great coverage. I am really interested in what you are talking about and I look forward to learning about your experience as a handyman. I have been suggested by many people that this is what I could be doing and I’ve already been helping people with these projects, but just not registered and not insured. So I’m taking that leap and getting the business started because I have a lucrative area that I could really maximize and make profitable. Thank you for everything on your channel.

There are too many states that you will starve trying to get $50.00-$100.00 an hour for. I'm sure there are places that will support that but in my state for example a high paying wage at say a plant or oil field business you can expect $18.00-$35.00 an hour with benifits. Most handymen here charge $20.00 an hour. I've been doing this for 15 years and I average between $30.00 to $100.00 an hour depending on the season, service, and time constraints. I've never advertised as my customers are extremly happy with my work and I've got repeat customers for years because of trust, quality of work, and they always refer me to friends and family. As a sole operator I am never slowed down by weather, seasons, or slow periods because I schedule my work around those obstacles. But it does take years of hard work to build up a clientele and one bad judgement call or being dishonest in ANY way can and will ruin your efforts. I'm proud that 15 years I've never been sued or had a single complaint. Trust me that is the real work.
@joelglanton6531
@joelglanton6531 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that you must be in the city if you want to charge so much. He's probably in Las Vegas if he's in Nevada. I live here and you can charge a lot. I used to charge people in nice neighborhoods higher when I first started doing jobs on my own, and I made a lot of money doing that while still taking jobs at 20 an hour or so, but now I realize that that's not very honest and I have a price sheet that has most every kind of job I do on there (some jobs I flat rate and some I charge hourly) so everyone gets charged the same.
@joelglanton6531
@joelglanton6531 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah and speaking of being sued, that's one thing no one ever talks about so I'm glad you mentioned it. You better believe that if a customer thinks you owe them money or otherwise didn't hold up your end of the bargain, they will sue you. If you accept a large job you may need to have the customer sign a contract; I explain to people that it is for the benefit of ALL parties involved. It is those aforementioned wealthy customers that will sue you before anyone else. As your business grows it's good to know or at least know of a good attorney, before you're even involved in any kind of legal dispute.

I can remember back when I was lowering my prices business would drop ! I found myself Believe it or not; practically begging people for me to do their jobs ! As soon as I raised my prices to a upper middle rate then the jobs began pouring in ! People just assumed that at that price he has to know what he’s doing. And I did! So value your time and knowledge TIME : your never getting back it’s there’s they are buying it! KNOWLEDGE: all the years of construction work in many different fields and knowledge in troubleshooting Is priceless. Know one has had the exact experiences that you have had and been wether it be long or short small or large .

Quick marketing methods are rarely the most cost effective. If you want quality customers fast then pay for some ads or for leads directly. If you want cost effective than invest your time now into local SEO efforts which will yield an extremely high ROI over the long term.

Business cards are a must but are handed directly to "potential" clients, you aren't going to be walking around town handing out cards so that's more for like potential clients. I have found magnets help out simply because everyone reads them, 3 cars on your daily commute may be looking for a handyman and as soon as they see your sign they snap a picture for later or call you on the spot. It depends as well on the area. Thumbtack may be a good source for leads.

Many handymen do not have the proper training or licenses needed. Don't use them for framing or siding, electrical plumbing or mechanical. Use a licensed tradesman and in the end you will come out on top.

In South Carolina we can't go over $200.00 materials and labor combined. If the cost is greater than the $200.00 we must have a specialty license or a general contractor's license. It's hard to make a living as a handyman in our area.

This video got me thinking about a quote of Ford’s. When he was on trial for something a lawyer asked him if he knew anything about cars or something like that and he said, “No, I don’t. However, with the press of a button I can have someone in my company who knows what he’s talking about in anything.” Or something like that

Hi, I’m Dennis Dela Rosa Handyman from Toronto Ontario. I just started my handyman business 4 months ago. Regarding step 5 - Create A Marketing Strategy: now I am working with “handy for pros” so that I can meet new people to be my customers in my handyman business. Any advice if this is a good marketing strategy for handyman business?

There are thousands of ways to get customers. The only question is this going to be a sustainable way to keep your schedule filled in the long term. Do you want to keep doing this for the next several years? If not, then I’d say use it in the short term and focus on better options.

It is still slightly unclear, I would like to run a small business of small repairs, like hanging pictures, maybe a ceiling fan or a door repair tv hanging. DO I need to have a business license for that? it just a side hustle that I would like to do on the weekends. I dont think anything for the price is 1,000 would be in my menu of job... this all in Nevada.

State License. Town License. Per township individually. Sometimes County License. Insurance and Liability. A work vehicle that should be sepetate from a personal vehicle. Depending on state you can not step unto homeowner stairs without insurance. This guy is telling you the easiest part of starting a buisness, the B.S part.

There's a lot of red tape to legally operate a small business. No electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, or large projects because getting a licensed isn't worth it. Hard and impractical to hire a decent helper yet many things are hard to do yourself and not worth your time as a laborer. Must charge 50+ per hour, but many people aren't willing to pay because. Competition is lots of sketchy clueless people, but they're cheap so that's what gets the job. End of the day, a handyman is someone people call because its a crappy job they don't want to do for a reason, they're too busy doing more important things, are incapable or don't know what they doing, its an emergency, or trying to use you for a flip. Either way its not the best situation.

There are certainly challenges you need to overcome, but that is true with any business. If all you do is search for "easy money" then you will never have a successful business. Also, the challenges you've brought up have been solved by hundreds of pros who run very profitable and successful handyman businesses.

Nick Eckemoff, I have people asking me all the time about needing a good handyman. Like any other business your reputation is what gets you work. It takes time to build that up, but Showing up on time, being clean, neat and courteous, And doing good work is a hell of a start. You will beat 3/4 of the competition out by doing those few things. But as far as licensing goes if you’re going to get electrical license your going to be an electrician, so goes with plumbing etc. I know certain states have handyman licenses which are limited to what you can do. But if you have liability insurance that can cover a lot of bases.

You are a great salesman. Been in the handyman business for 30 years! Step number one aprenitice under a master tradesman for at least two years. Do work that your skilled at and you half way enjoy. This guy never roofed houses, framed or trimmed much less did sheetrock plumbing or electric work for any contractor. Do yourself a favor and get a couple of years under your belt. Trust me this aint reality. We would laugh this guy off the jobsite back in the day. Guys and girls get experience then get this guys course.Thats a fact jack. Me not sixty years old for nothing. Good Luck!
