I, too, remember my father, God rest his soul, singing this song. He was born in Korea in 1935, lost both parents during Korean War, and was sent to a foster family in San Jose, CA where he went to highschool and college. He came back to Korea after he graduated, but I guess he was more or less Americanized, a little different from other Koreans of his time as a result. For example he never watched Koren TV for the rest of his life, he only watched AFKN(American Forces Korea Network, a broadcasting service for American soldiers stationed in Korea ). He wasn't into rock and roll (because he was in the States before r&r), but he liked country songs like "Take me home, country road", "The City of New Orleans" or "Rhinestone Cowboy". I was thinking about him today, and I remembered this song, and it led me here.

i sang this song as a young girl and it never left my head. Growing up, my brother (on the basis of the movie) told me that poor Tom had killed a stage coach because he hadn’t known about the war’s end. For the next 30 years thereafter i always sympathised. Then about 5 years ago found this song through youtube and researched thoroughly the history of Tom Dula. i’m still sympathetic and sad at his untimely end.

My sister was fourteen years older than me and she taught me this song. I can sing it word for word by memory. She learned it from our grandmother. I used to think it was just a silly rhyme she made up until a few years ago when I looked it up. I was very delighted to see a movie picture to go along with the words. This song means a lot to me

The original folk song was written in 1868 as Tom Dula, The Kingston Trio's version was recorded in 1958. In 1959, the movie The Legend of Tom Dooley was released and featured the Kingston Trio's version in the soundtrack.

My high school music teacher taught us this song back in high school in the 80’s. It popped into my head this morning as well as several times over the years. I thought nothing of singing the words to this catchy tune back then but really it’s actually a grim song to teach in schools. Can you imagine getting this pass the PC police today?!

Very well done. In the mid-60s my brothers and I would harmonize this ballad in the back of the Buick riding with my father going from south Atlanta to visit his family in Indiana. I was maybe 12-13; my brothers younger. We had no idea what it was we were singing about but we sure did enjoy singing it over & over. I recalled this memory when I came across book today by Sharyn McCrumb that attempts to recreate the story from the viewpoint of attorney who defended Tom. Great video.
