Today I went to Big South Fork with no particular plans. I found a small grave of a five year old girl tragically killed by a falling tree. I drove out Jack's Ridge Trail then hiked down to Laurel Fork Creek. After that, I walked the perimeter of the Oscar Blevins farm. Lastly on the way home, I stopped at the Bandy Creek crossing on highway 297 and walked out an old road finding lots of signs of life from years ago.

Had yourself a great little explore. Lots of evidence of habitation! Reminded me of a LBL walk with all the remnants and no foundations. Thanks for sharing the story of the little girl. It's a sad story, but one I have not heard before. Enjoyed this one Kerry. Happy Holidays to ya!

I’m glad you found the little girls grave. Just another sad chapter in the history of BSF.. Look at the clean, clear water in Laurel Fork! That’s what protecting these streams leads to. You’re right, it’s one of the most beautiful streams in BSF. I had no idea where the road down by Bandy Creek went. I sure believe you found an old homesite! That needs to be looked at some more. Very cool! Sometimes the best plan is no plan! You had a very good day!

Yep pretty much winged it. I think there are tons of stuff to be found above the falls. Just too many old roads heading into the woods from 297

Hey Kerry, just watched your video. Sad story about the little girl. I never heard this story. I cant imagine how the father must have felt. Im sending you a link to an old map - Wartburg 1893. Leatherwood Ford is at the upper edge. Is any of the area you explored here? Structures are tiny black squares.

That's too bad! I would of loved to see an old 1890's exquisitely detailed topo map of that region. Unfortunately, it looks like the government program that made these maps (BLESS THEM!!!) stopped short of finishing mapping the entire state.
