In this video I show how we use a hanging bench while hanging gear for our setnet fishery in Cook Inlet Alaska. I show how you can build a simple bench that will aid in creating a more ergonomic posture for hanging web. The bench also facilitates better knot tying and proper mesh spacing. Please watch and subscribe for more helpful videos. Blessings.

Wow! I grew up on setnet sites near Clam Gulch at Falls Creek! We fished there from 1948 to 1959 back in the territorial days when there were still fish traps. I hung a lot of gear as a kid, but never used a bench.

This is a good, clear & concise, informative video that I appreciated watching. You showed me exactly what i need to build my own bench and the proper way to use it. Thank you very much. Happy fishing 2020!

use bonded twine your first lift will tighten the knots right in to the side lines

Another Q: or funny thought is: some PhD/Master degree article on gill net fishery study said HANGING RATIO IS *NOT* IMPORTANT for catch rate, they compare HR (Hanging Ratio) E=0, 0.3..., 0.5 (evenly hang, the PDF file you said on internet NEVER have HR under 1; evenly hang to them means HR=2:1, which it's the HR=1/0.5=2 LOL; confusing; PhD students always use technical notations LOL), ... up to 1 (FULLY STRETCH), each HR net is used in many area to compare the catch rate and then switch net for each diff location and finally each catch per weight per size is analysis; the conclusion is Gambian Sole Net which has NO HANGING RATIO (HR=0 or DO NOT EVEN WASTE TIME TO HANG the net, just LOOSELY WOVEN TO BIG 1/2" or 5/8" rope=saving TONS OF TIME; and same goes for lead line) - that is called SOLE NET and that DESIGN ALWAYS GIVES BETTER catch rate than all of the HR net according to their study/article. I was an electrical engineer (and fishing is my country-boy's habit since child and most Chinese are better educated and smarter and have more PhD degree than me) so I pin point the important matters in your life so saving you$, time and change your life if u follow "the smart funny honest Chinese the Great LOL and together Chinese can contribute/help the world:); Chinese American loves America all races" as my friends said, but my racist white b*tching neighbor hits me 20x said "go back to China, this is my White country!". Anyway, here is the LOOK OF THE SOLE GILL NET WITH HR=0 (NO HANGING AT ALL): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLNzqNtosbKxgGQ.html this is a straight IDEA. I welcome anyone with top brain/experience share any knowledge/how to design this SOLE NET. Thank you for share great mind/top brain together on how to make life even better with peace:)! Sometimes an expert with 55 yrs of gill net fishing experience is MORE important than a few PhD students essay:)!

Thank you for this!!! You just saved me a ton of time. I was going to make a hill net for my wilderness survival kit, but I was driving my self crazy trying to find out how to make it with the proper ratio. I’m just going to follow your advice. I appreciate it

I did some commercial fishing a few seasons up there right in your neck of the woods.. I fished with Robert Correia right there out of clam gulch

Yes I know Robert and family. They fish Howard Davis' old site. I probably met you once or twice as you guys drove past or up at the buying station.

Yessir.. That would be the one :) Yea.. we probably did lol.. small world like that. I am actually looking to leave in about 7 days to drive up. Leaving this world down here behind.. hopefully for good. I don't have a destination but I am hoping I can find a decent place to create an off the grid shelter for the winter anyway. Any ideas on a good area for such a thing? I had thought around testumena lake originally but I don't know if that is to populated of an area. I was also thinking the other side of cook inlet somewhere, but I seen you can't drive thru there, and I couldnt tell where the road actually ends lol. Any advice would be appreciated. I seen roberts house for sale a while back online so Im not sure if he's still living in that house down the street from clam shell. Anywho.. Any advice helps :) I'd appreciate it.

Tustumena lake area sounds nice. Not sure what they have for public land on the actual lake but out the road there is property. Outside Homer there is cheep land as well. Some requires ATV or snomachine to get to. I'll let you know if I hear about anyone looking to sell. I would watch craigslist Alaska also.

It is for me and my family for the last 55 years. There are over 750 permit holders in the East Side Cook Inlet fishery.

It’s called a rolling hitch. That’s what we always called it!! One time around just half hitch but we go around 2 times and call it a rolling hitch. Seems to get the knots tighter then just a half hitch!!

Well Tim I thought you just went to the net store and bought them. Interested what you do with the bycatch of prohibited species caught. Nice vid. Buddy.

+STEVE ROB I mentioned King salmon which we try not to catch but are legal to catch and sell. We just use smaller mesh netting to avoid catching as many large kings so they are not really a bycatch. If we happened to catch a marine mammal that would not be good. We would need to report it to the marine mammal protection folks with the federal government and we would probably get fined. If we decided to catch a whale then cut it up and eat it's blubber we would certainly be thrown in prison or fed to Orca whales or worse yet handed over to green peace workers for public execution. Needless to say we try not to kill any marine mammals. Back in the day you could sell them to the cannery. Times have changed.

+STEVE ROB I would have to agree with Steve that was very interesting...I know with my ADD I would mess that up for sure...Making the actual net would be cool to learn as well ...very cool vid

Thanks! I'm just about not patient enough to hang net. I have to work on it for a couple hours then take a break for a day or two before going back. But as a poor fisherman I can't afford to pay someone else to do the work. Each net is worth about $1200 not including the labor to put it together.

How many leads do you use? One for every third knot like the corks?

Yes, approx 107 for a 35 fathom net.

We don't hang out the leads like they do in the bay. Just keep it the same. Thanks for watching.

Based on your info: mesh size 5-5/8=5.625" STR; hang evenly, HR=2 or E=0.5; hang 5.625x3/2=8.4375" per 3 pickup, gives 2.81" sq mesh. I was using 17cm mesh str., try to hang it 2.5" sq mesh, will most fish just pass thru b/c it's too big mesh size?! To save $, I use DIY lead add to the rope as leadline and foam as float. One time catch a salmon.

Q: how deep the average or usually you use (you said it's 45 mesh deep=MD)? I google to read many scientist fishery gill net study paper claim their SOLE GILL NET DO NOT EVEN HANG (WITH NO HANGING RATIO) and catch more since the scholars claim HANGING RATIO DOES NOT CHANGE catch ratio so why bother waste time to hang it (i.e: pick up 3 meshes per hanging/etc). Here is one SOLE NET without hanging ratio I spend tons of time and find it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLNzqNtosbKxgGQ.html ... plz advise based on your 55+ yrs of experience vs scientist scholars: Q: usually HOW DEEP IS the gill net (7 ft, 10ft, 15ft or 30 mesh deep)? And Q2: is hanging ratio SOLE NET really does NOT matter or change the catch ratio?! I just want everybody spend time on this topic. Thanks for sharing your future advise.
