This is the first of two videos where I make a landing net. In this video, I make the bending form, cut walnut and ash strips and bend them around the form. I hope you enjoy the video. Comments are always welcome.

Thank you Steve I am going to be making a few nets for Christmas presents this year. I have been bending wood for a long time but I wasn’t sure the best way to cut the lacing groove. This was an EXCELLENT instructional video.

irekkramarz Thank you very much. I made this net a couple of years ago at the request of a friend who wanted to give it to her Dad for Father's Day. He's a big fisherman but I don't believe to this day he's taken the net out in the boat with him. Says it's to nice to use. I put a rubber net on this one thinking that it would be "fish friendly" but if I knew he wasn't going to use it I might have gone in a different direction. Anyway, it was a lot of fun to make. If I can ever get caught up on my projects I might try another one maybe with a turned handle of some sort. Good luck with yours should you decide to give it a go. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Both are much appreciated. Take care, Steve

Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I've watched it countless times. In process of TRYING to make a net. Have my frame, and strips are currently soaking. We will see how the bending goes. Your video is incredibly detailed which is really helpful. Also, GO PANTHERS!

What glue are you recommending for this project? Did you use a band saw after using handle template? Thanks so much! Beauty net!!

Scott - I apologize for my delay in responding. I used Gorilla Glue for this project. It's a waterproof polyurethane glue that should hold up well when exposed to a wet environment. Any waterproof glue such as Titebond III Ultimate would work as well. After I layed out the shape of the handle from the template I believe I cut it to shape on the band saw staying outside the line then used a bearing guided flush trim bit in the router and the template to clean it up. To tell you the truth it's been 3 years since I made this project so I don't remember all the details exactly. At that time I was editing video on my iPhone and had to cut out a lot of footage that I wish I could have left in. Anyway, I hope that answers your questions but if not please send me a follow up message. Thanks for watching! Take care, Steve

What kind of trigger clamps would you recommend? and what kind of length? Thanks for the Video! You have a lot of cool ideas

Thanks for watching and for the comment. I don't favor one clamp over another. Most if the quick acting trigger clamps I have are by Irwin which are available at Lowes. The older ones I have are by Vise Grip but I don't think they make them anymore. The largest ones I have are 12 inches but most are smaller than that. I generally use them to hold things in place until I get on a larger F or K body clamp. They have medium clamping strength and are best suited for smaller projects and worked well on this landing net. Thanks again for watching. Take care, Steve

Where could I get strips?
@slindsley1951
@slindsley1951 9 жыл бұрын
Aaron Schaffer Aaron - You might consider getting the wood you'd like to use and take it to a cabinet/woodworking shop and ask them to cut the strips for you. Also, if there's a local woodworking club in your area one of the members might be willing to help you out. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Good luck. Take care, Steve

do you soak the wood in hot water?
@slindsley1951
@slindsley1951 8 жыл бұрын
Sean - I don't recall that I used extremely hot water but it wasn't cold either. I believe that I just used luke warm tap water. The idea is to let the strips soak long enough to absorb enough water to become flexible. I hope that helps. Take care, Steve

@@slindsley1951 Hello. Sorry for my english please. How many hours do you soak the wood? And how many degrees celsia is the water?
@slindsley1951
@slindsley1951 3 жыл бұрын
@@samuelsulir9696 Samuel - I believe that I soaked the strips for 2 - 3 hours. The water was whatever it was coming out of the water faucet. I'd estimate that it was around 23c. Take care, Steve

Brilliant nets! Can you remember how long the strips where that you used?
@slindsley1951

Joshua - The strips I used were 60 inches long. That worked for the size net I was making, You'll have to adjust if your net is larger or smaller. Take care, Steve

I don't recall the exact dimensions of the form but I have it packed away in storage. Since I don't plan on building any more nets I'd be happy to pass it on to you. Assuming that you live in the US. If you're interested please send an e-mail to slindsley1951@gmail.com. Thanks. Steve

@slindsley1951 6 жыл бұрын
Richard - I got my rubber net for this project from Drifter Marine www.driftermarine.com. Search their site for rubber nets and you'll find what you're looking for. As far as wood goes, I get some wood from Woodcraft. Not sure if there's one near you or not. You can find their locations on their website. www.woodcraft.com. Recently I picked up some wood for a project from West Penn Hardwoods in Conover, NC. www.westpennhardwoods.com They have a large selection and they do ship. Other than that I search Craigs List and the internet. I hope that helps. Take care, Steve
