Just a note for anyone who hasnt tried this yet. : A basket like this will have to be watered at least once a day in the middle of hot summer. The small amount of lightweight soil will dry out in no time once theres a lot of foliage on the plants.

Great advice, thanks for that. I like to stick an upside down bottle of water in with a hole in to keep baskets hydrated in the summer. These do take a lot of watering though!

I grow in hanging baskets. I usually do 2 plants per basket and use Tumbling Tom Red on one side and Tumbling Tom Yellow on the other. Looks really decorative along the side of the house and nice to have the mixture of colour and flavour. Top tip from me would be to use either an old compost bag or a plastic carrier bag cut into a circle and put in the bottom of the basket before the compost. It helps keep the compost moist and stops all of the water running straight out of the bottom of the basket when you water them. You can't see the bag through the Coco liner, especially if you put the black side of the bag (most compost bags are black on the inside) facing outwards.

That’s such a good idea to stop them drying out, I’ll do that with the rest, thank you! I really like the idea of mixing the colours too, I’ll give that a go next year definitely!

And find that thing they love to do as well. Thanks for the video, I have a cherry tomato and a hanging basket, I thought i might try something like this and your video confirms it. Woot woot!

thanks for the video, I like that you used a regular tomato and not one of the "tumbler' types...no need as long as it's an Indeterminate

Gosh, when the video started I thought it was a brilliant idea. And I bought a bunch of those baskets on clearance for less than $1 each a few years back. But what I thought you were going to do was tear the coconut fiber a bit (in the center) and have the plants grow straight downward. I have a bucket with chains specifically designed for this (works great and never have any blight!). Well, I am going to try tearing a small whole and see how they do in those baskets this year. Keep up the good work on your channel!

Thank you! That sounds like you dropped on with a bargain there! I didn’t think of growing them through the bottom of the liner, that’s a great idea. Let me know how they all get on!

I hope you upload the result video to show how this worked out for you. I imagine the adult tomato plant will be eventually be too heavy & pull itself out the pot [?] without extra supports. I like experimenting with my garden but have to admit my scepticism for this one. Good luck mate & looking forward to your updates & hope this idea is a success.

Hi unfortunately rats ravaged my allotment last summer so I’m having to redo this again this year to do a results video. The variety I use for these is ‘Cherry Falls’ which is a determinate bush/trailing variety that doesn’t grow as big!

Oh! How funny, I'm planning to do exactly the same thing this year, I bought Cherry Falls for mine too. I'm planning to do 2 baskets with 2 plants in each. My Cherry Falls are currently small like yours, probably slightly smaller even, but they are just in little cells so I think once they're in the baskets they will get a move on. I've also got some of those water retention gel crystals to put in mine as it's usually very dry here in the east, so hopefully that'll help. Was wondering what compost that was? Only, I bough some Jack's Magic today and it says on it "new improved formula" but I have defintely noticed there are a lot more stick bits in it than last year.
@GrowIt
@GrowIt 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea with the crystals, I’ll find out soon enough whether I should have done that haha. Once they’re in they’ll probably grow like mad! The compost is from Lidl it’s only 99p, I normally just get the cheapest I can find since I don’t have any problems growing with it but the majority gets dug in anyway and it seems a waste of money to pay for fancy compost.

I was worried about where I am going to put all my tomato seedlings. (I have a container garden and went a little planting happy when I started my seeds indoors.) I am going to try this with two of my cherry tomato plants. Thanks for the idea!!! 😃

How do you pollinate the tomatoes when you grow them in this way?
@GrowIt
@GrowIt Жыл бұрын
Hi Marjory they can self-pollinate quite easily as tomato flowers all have both male and female parts. Giving the plant a light shake can help move the pollen around too.
