They had an idea based on their imagination but it was far from reality. and they wouldn`t listen to you. they saw you as beneath them so if you try to tell them something important they would ignore you. you had to find a few supervisors who listen, so those could talk to them.

People like Vickers only care about the bottom line
@danieldryden66448 ай бұрын
Well it is a business after all
@PhycoKrusk8 ай бұрын
@@danieldryden6644 Business doesn't succeed by only pursuing the bottom line; it succeeds by providing a product or service that customers want at a price they're willing to pay. Are customers willing to pay 10 cents more per gallon of propane because of the weather? Possibly, if the weather was disrupting supply and that raised the wholesale price for Strickland; that's the sort of cost increase people understand. But the reason for raising the price here does not appear to be because it will increase the wholesale cost to Strickland; it appears to be strictly because people are using more propane. That's not a good justification for raising prices. Much in the same way that anytime a person begins their reasoning for something with "In business school..." is always justification to seek a second opinion.
@danieldryden66448 ай бұрын
@@PhycoKrusk what are you talking about? Increase demand is absolutely a justification for increase in price thats a basic economic principle
@PhycoKrusk8 ай бұрын
@@danieldryden6644 Yes, it is a basic economic principle, and that's why I'm disregarding it here, because basic economic principles applied strictly according to the model, as Vickers did, only work as expected within the model. Once you get into the real world, as Hank indirectly points out, changes like that will lead to results which are not easily predictable, because people are not machines following a program. If you charge $5 per gallon of propane, and someone will use 10 gallons of propane for heating, that's $50 of revenue; we can agree on that. If you raise prices by 10 cents per gallon, you will make $51 revenue only if that person continues to use 10 gallons of propane. If they turn the heat down, put on a sweater, and only use 9 gallons of propane, you lose $4.10 of revenue. This is why businesses pay tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to experts to make predictions about the market conditions based on buckets of gathered and distilled data, and not some yuppie who went to college with no actual experience: Models assume ideal systems, and the real world is rarely, if ever, an ideal system. Applying principles because "that's just the basics" is why businesses fail, as illustrated by this episode.

Buck is really the only one in the wrong here. Or at least 98%. Vickers' 2 crimes here were 1. Raising prices during peak season (which isn't unheard of, supply and demand _is_ a thing) and 2. The tattlers in the truck. The latter of which was something Buck _let_ him do, implying he wen't to Buck first to see if it's okay. He even admitted that he used them from time to time without the drivers' knowledge. Vickers telling them was a blunder on his part because they all quit, but it's not like he was doing something against Buck's wishes. As for the hazmat certification, that's on Buck too. How can you hire a fresh out of college graduate and expect him to understand the specific requirements of certain duties without telling him or asking him first? To put it plainly Buck is the real screw up here. Vickers is mostly just too green and too ignorant to be put in that position during a crisis time. That degree only taught him how to manage a business. Not manage people.
