For me it's the other way, in the city ya never know what is hiding in the shadows but when I am out in the country walking in the dark I find myself more relaxed.

I was born and raised in the country - all but 46 or so of my 66 years I've lived in the country - My 20s and 30s were in various towns across the country (Military Wife).. I've never been afraid of the dark .. But those lit city streets terrified me. I know my woods, I know the animals that live in them .. I respect them .. and steer clear of their areas at night. Pretty Simple. But those city predators? You can't hear 'em or see 'em coming ... They'll smile and even tip their hat as they approach ... Then grab your purse (or much worse). I'll stick with my dark nights ...
