When he says Hank's songs always makes him feel low down he's referring to his father's songs. Hank Sr died when he was about 4 years old and hank jr is commonly referred to as Bocephus. A nickname his father gave him

It's all about living up to the "legend" that is his father. He hears the Hank Williams Sr. songs, he starts to feel depression over the loss of his father, starts drinking due to depression and does something foolish like cheating. Then feeling the guilt over cheating, he drinks more, completing the self-destructive cycle over again. Listen to father, drink, cheat, drink, feel depressed, listen to father's song to come out of depression, but misses the father and starts all over again. The "woman at home" just isn't always able to keep him out of his own head, and out of his own troubles, despite his best efforts to love her and himself. Mental problems are the most destructive ones.

"Ramblin Man", "I'm so Lonesome I could cry", and "Your cheating heart" are all songs by his father who was one of the first country superstars. He died in the back seat of a Cadillac on his way to a show on Christmas day in West Virginia. Hank Jr. has always had issues. Family Tradition is a good song to explore those issues.

This was one of the reasons I turned to country music in the early 70s this and Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger album also there was The Marshall Tucker band. I drove a truck moving drilling rigs and since everything was over size and permitted we had to be off the road by dark we would all park up at a motel. There was one driver who we called Joe Dally and he always had his acoustic guitar with him. We would all hole up in one of the rooms fill the bathtub with beer and ice and Joe would play and sing every Hank Jr song and then some oh those were great times

So .. there are so many things in this song that doesn't get picked up on, unless your a OG country fan. His daddy, Hank Williams Sr. Was an amazing artist himself, & had a extraordinary unique sound, the songs he references are hit songs by his father, also his father died of drugs and alcohol abuse! That ties into the song, then add the factor of his sins, cheating, drinking, and the memories of his father.. all ties into Getting "whiskey bent" drunk and honky tonk angel= Bar floozy! As songs to listen or react to 1) A country boy will survive 2) family tradition 3) all my rowdy friends are coming over tonite!

Yep, you're gonna have to listen to Hank Sr. to help understand where Hank Jr. Comes from. As a child Jr. was dressed up like his late father and put on stage to sing his dads songs. When he got older he wanted to do his own songs and a lot of fans weren't very supportive if you know what I mean. It didn't help when he fell off Ajax Mountain and damn near died. He'll still do one of his old mans songs occasionally because he has a lot of respect for his iconic fathers music and they're just friggin great. It was a lot for a young man to live up to but he did it well and on his own terms.

Well, it's about him getting drunk, but it's about his dad who died when he was a baby. Hank Jr. grew up singing his dad's songs(his mom really pushed him into it), but the parts in the song where he says "don't play 'Your Cheating Heart'(one of his dad's most famous songs), cause that will tear me all apart, and I'll need to get whiskey bent and hell bound", is the same when he said "Don't you play, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"(another popular song of his dads) cause I'll get all balled up inside and I'll get whiskey bent and hell bound". Basically the last line tells it all, Old Hank's songs always make him feel low down.

Outstanding reaction! A lot of Hank Jr.'s songs are about his own life and very deep. He is the greatest country music entertainer of all time, all things considered. Good to watch this.

His reference to "Your Cheating heart" is in reference to the legendary hit of his Father Hank Williams St.

This is real country and from a legendary artist. All of Hank's stuff is worth a listen, I recommend Hotel Whiskey or Family Tradition.
