These are two of my favorite Hank Jr songs. Other favs are Country Boy Can Survive, All My Rowdy Friends and Born to Boogie. I have the funniest memory associated with Family Tradition though. When I was in college I was in marching band and we went to Dublin Ireland to march in the New Years Day parade. New Years Eve, all 300+ of us went to a club and had requested Family Tradition. At the chorus, we did the reply lines quite loudly and drunkenly. The looks on the Irish locals faces were priceless. All these drunk Americans screaming out “TO GET DRUNK”, “TO GET HIGH” and “TO GET LAID”. It was an unforgettable experience.

Hank Sr drank/drugged himself to death when Jr was 3 or 4 years old, so it really is a family tradition for him.

At any bar, party, bon fire when family tradition is played it is a tradition to sing as loud as you can... after the line "Hank why do you drink?"..... TO GET DRUNK! "Hank why do roll smoke?"... TO GET STONED! "Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?" TO GET LAID!

In 1973, Hank fell down a mountain and nearly died. That's what he was referring. His beard is so he can hide the scars.

In Family Tradition, the first line says "Country music singers have all been a real close family" -- so "Family Tradition" is about all of the old country music singers he would hang out with. When he references "so lonesome I could cry" and "your cheating heart" - those are his daddy's (Hank Sr.) songs. For fun songs that'll make you laugh - try "The Winner" by Bobby Bare and "You're the reason our kids are ugly" by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. Old Country and great songs.

I have been to a couple clubs and every time they played this, it was sort of audience participation. "Hank, why do ya drink, to get drunk, Hank why do you roll smoke, to get stoned, why must you live like the songs that you wrote, and some comeback there too but I can't remember what it was. Good party song. Love your reaction to it.

All the songs referenced in the 1st song were his Daddys' songs. What he was referencing in the 2nd song is the way his Daddy lived (and others of the family!). Ultimately, that life style took his Daddy's life at an early age. So Jr didn't have his Daddy long. "... they both tried to kill me, in 1973" ---- True story!!!

The reason it’s called family tradition is because his dad ,the legend, Hank Williams Sr died from and had a history of drinking and smoking until it ruined him. All of the songs like ramblin man, cheatin heart, and I’m so lonesome I could cry were also written by his dad. I hope this adds some depth to your feelings toward the genius lyrics in the songs.
