Hank Williams performing (I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle
Lyrics:
I was riding Number Nine
Heading south from Caroline
I heard that lonesome whistle blow
Got in trouble, had to roam
Left my gal an' left my home
I heard that lonesome whistle blow
Just a kid, acting smart
I went and broke my darling's heart
I guess I was too young to know
They took me off the Georgia Main
Locked me to a ball and chain
I heard that lonesome whistle blow
All alone, I bear the shame
I'm a number, not a name
I heard that lonesome whistle blow
All I do is sit an' cry
When the evening train goes by
I heard that lonesome whistle blow
I'll be locked here in this cell
'Till my body's just a shell
An' my hair turns whiter than snow
I'll never see that gal of mine
Lord, I'm in Georgia doing time
I heard that lonesome whistle blow

Yeah no one comes close its a country roots connection that is missing today. Similar to the connection that Elvis had with his audience. There is a roots singer that recently overdosed that also had this connection Luke Bell.

my last comment was true, but I just want to amend... Hank had enormous talent, but the passion and depth of his singing makes it last over time enough so that I care to comment precisely. His humanity, faults and qualities are so human that it implores me to comment correctly. I'm a Hank Williams fan and he has touched my life.

I will never forget the day I sat down and started playing my Old Mans records back in 1966 on this Great sounding Tube RCA Phonograph. When I stumbled on to a Hank record I played every tune on that record because I was amazed at Hanks singing ! He captured the exact essence of true country in every twang, yodel, slur, and tone. I still think he was the best writer and singer country ever had. Lets not forget his players. They all captured everything Perfectly. This tune was one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing. :-)

I have such vivid memories of him considering i was so young. My dad was a heavy drinker-he drowned in a river when I was 3 years old in 1949. He loved Hanks music, Jimmie Rogers too. He had those old 78s. My mom played them after he died and left her with 7 kids and no income. I was about 6 or 7 when it came over the radio that he had died. My mom was ironing and I recall she had to sit down in a chair to recover. I have listened to his music ever since and I just think he was fantastic. Much like Jimmie Rogers and Keith Whitley later, they left us too soon with too many songs left unsung. Thanks for all of your great posts. I come here a lot to listen to it. I am now pushing 68 and am lost when it comes for what passes for country these days. I know things change but let the kids have it. A few days beard growth and the knees torn out of your jeans does not make u a country singer.

Before I was old enough to know about him, my Dad was singing his stuff, so I was primed to love his music. He made an entire generation sit up and take notice with I'm so lonesome I could cry. He and Rogers started it all - and they both got a lot of their blues from the colored folk. Credit where it's due.
